I know what you mean...there are two K-Marts near me and both are always empty. I don't know how they stay in business. I go there only if I need something specific and am passing it. I don't ever browse or anything.
I haven't been to K-Mart more than 3 times in the past 10 years. The parking lot of the one by my home is always empty, but SOMEONE must be shopping there, or it'd be closed, right?
So, what do you buy at K-Mart? What deals do you find there that are better than at Target or Wal-Mart?
Haha, I may start going there just because it'd be so much less crowded than Target & Wal-Mart.

When I was a kid - back when they had blue light specials - I liked the icee and bag of popcorn. :)
We don't have on here, but we get the ads and some stuff looks insanely cheap. So cheap, I've thought about going online to shop Kmart.
I absolutely love Kmarts clothes for my kids! When school shopping starts the jeans usually are $10 a pair. Their clothes are adorable, hip and cool for a cheap price.. For me though, they have an awesome summer line. i bought a bunch of summer dresses and tube tops. They also have lay away year round too..... Oftentimes you can get cosmetics for buy on get one free too!

Less crowded/busy than Walmart, cheaper than Target, they have layaway, a good selection, and there's one right by my house.
I'd rather shop anywhere than Walmart, and I'm willing to pay a little more just to avoid Walmart, its never ending lines, poor quality products, unhelpful employees, and demographic that it attracts. I shopped there for a while, but I decided that our time & sanity were worth more than whatever money you save by shopping there. Love the Kmart here.
You can thank Walmart for killing Kmart. It's a shame, really.
The one here is OK, but our Target is closer so I usually go there instead. I am thinking of going there to look and see what they have - friend got a lot of camping gear there recently.
Back when they had K-Marts in my part of Texas, I loved their Martha Stewart line of kitchen accessories. So much better quality than anything I found at Target or Walmart, and less expensive too.
That's the only thing I miss, though!
I used to love some of the Martha Stewart stuff too . . . but I rarely go to Kmart either. The one near us always seems so run down.
my hubby like their sears tools, i like their crazy inexpensive kids and babies clothes, especially the ones on the clearence racks, plus.... way less crowded than target or walmart, and cheaper!
When there was one close by I used to go for their plus size clothes. They had a better selection than wal-mart and target thinks anyone over the age of 25 should be shopping at wal-mart LOL
I HATE targets household decor items ...ugly and tacky. Wal-mart I don't mind too much. they have the ugly and tacky ... but you can also get normal too. I also won't buy clothes for my daughter at Target ... their juniors clothes are WAY too slutty for my tastes.
The closest K-mart is now about 30 minutes away, without traffic. I need to head up there before winter gets going full force for some boots for me. I can never find boots I like at target or wal-mart ... or most places really.
I never go. However, there is ONE still open about 20 minutes from us. My mom called me and she said they had plus size clothes on the clearance racks for $1 and I should go check it out. I did and I got a couple pairs of pants, about 4 tank tops and 2 other shirts. GREAT deal! That was a couple years ago and I haven't been back since.
I have wondered this too!
We still have two K-Marts open here, both within 20 minutes of where I live, and both are ALWAYS practically empty.
When my kids were babies I would shop there sometimes because they had a line of Sesame Street Babies products that were really cute, and one of them had a beautiful garden center (which has since closed.)
I still shop there maybe about once or twice a year, partly out of nostalgia and partly just to get away from the usual scene and crowd at Target. But it's only really good for basic household supplies (cleaning, pet, office, etc.) I think their selection of clothing, shoes and bedding/linens/decor is awful :(
K-mart was the same way when it WAS in Texas, but that's why they closed all of their stores here. I never found anything useful at K-mart.
I have found some Halloween stuff and Easter stuff in there that is not at the other chains.
That's about it. And about the only time I ever go in there is when it is more convenient than a 45 minute trek into Walmart because I'm already in their parking lot for another reason (grocery store). That happens about once a year?
They really are the worst. Can even recall having to go FIND someone to check me out and take my money. There was not a single cash register open. Not one. Had to wait at the customer service counter for someone to help me too (not because of other customers, just b/c they were "busy" shuffling stuff around I guess?). This was at like 10:00 a.m. Not the minute they opened... I would've just left, but I needed the bow and gift bag before I got home. :(
I didnt know that K-mart still existed!
I shop there because around here, it's the only place that does layaway. And, because since everyone thinks that KMart is a hokey store, I never have to worry about it being too busy there. I love all their stuff and it's good quality just like every store.
In the past I have used their layaway on electronic items, such as a DS, around Christmas time. I also stop there when I don't want to drive around to other places or busier places. Other than that, I must say they usually do run a very good end of season sale on their clothing.
Any time I stop there (usually I'm looking for something particular, and I despise WalMart) I am disappointed in the store, the contents, the employees, etc. It's like the Boulevard of Broken Dreams! LOL
I always leave wondering how in the heck they stay afloat.
We did pop in for a Little Ceasars's pizza this week!
(And it's funny--if you ever have a return/exchange, etc., they always offer you a free pizza!)
i am petite and find that their modern cut Basic Edition T shirts are my fav. Stuff i've gotten at Target is too thin/cheap material, too slutty, too long in the torso and low in the chest, and too expensive for the quality.
my mil gets great kids clothes there for my son and daughter and she gets them clearanced too.
Their toy department is nice in my opinion, usually great sales, and a big enough but not too big selection. I usually pop in there when i need a quick bday gift for a kid's party.
i am from up north though so walmart hasn't been up here maybe as long to run kmart out.
Target is just awful though in my opinion, the staff is horrible with customers, the clothing is cheap, the selection of shoes for kids is bad, their picture frames and seasonal stuff is ok but that' about it.
edited : ahhhh just went in there today and there where a gazillion racks of basic edition shirts and pants at half off. except of course the cool ones I like, but still $8 for a T that fits, covers and lasts, is good.
just an FYI they now carry dresses for girls and little matching outfits that fit your American girl dolls or the knock off 18 " dolls. Got me one on clearance for $6
I buy my childrens clothing there not all mainly shorts they are nice kaki cargos for my boy and the capri styles and shorts for my girls baby clothes they are cheaper and last longer than others. The clearance sales are far better I always find what I want,as for shoes no name brand or Payless.Rewards program every month I get free 10 bucks added to my card that typically expire in 3 days just a bonus for shopping there.Every purchase you get points added to card that equals money to spend at kmart or sears just like using a coupon the past year than any other place people are catching on they are more busy the parking lot is always full the lines are long.Instore promotions are nice too for the things we buy all the time
Sears owns K-Mart and is in the process of closing hundreds of stores. Don't be surprised if that one goes too.
I like Walmart's clearance rack for boys' clothes.
The reason I shop at Kmart is exactly what you already stated. It is much easier to shop when you aren't fighting the crowds. Their prices are almost the same as Walmart and even if I have to pay a few extra pennies I feel it is worth it to have a quicker and stress free shopping experience. Although I find it extremely annoying the "card programs" I racked up about $100 worth of merchandise I cashed in at Christmas time towards gifts.I didn't make any big ticket purchases just my everysay household supplies for the year
I always perfered K-mart over the other big box stores. But about 10-15 yrs ago they went into bankruptcy and closed many stores including the one near me. Now the closest ones are about 30 miles away. Before the bankruptcy K-mart was a great store with great deals and as many said --- layaway. I wish they would open one closer to me again.
We do have Shopko stores here they used to be partnered with Pamida, they are nice stores but a bit more pricy than K-mart.
I never shop Target and I hate Wal-mart.
btw: K-mart bought Sears --- so Sears is now owned by K-mart.
I never shop Sears anymore. I had a bad experience at a job interview at Sears many years ago. I caught the interviewer in a few lies and I haven't shopped there since.
Oh and K-mart is what S S Kresge stores became in the '60's and were all renamed in 1977. If you remember the old Dime Stores from years ago.
I don't. They closed all our K-Marts about a year ago and before that I hadn't shopped in one for years!
~When I did go it was always for the same thing: Good burp rags...they had the really good thick ones!
We have 2 within 20 minutes of driving, and both are D.E.A.D. I tried each one a couple of times when we first moved here. I was looking for Dora bedding. I did feel like the quality was less than Walmarts, and the place looked run-down, dirty, and uncared for.
I grew up with a K-Mart, and it was a saving grace for our town. Now, in my home town there are 2 super Walmarts and one very empty Big K.
I think Kmart did a disservice to itself when they remodeled 10 years ago (same time Sears & Martha joined) and made the look of the stores VERY generic. I remember walking into a VERY sterile looking store, and thinking that it hurt my eyes. Walmarts' version wasn't much better at the time, but they have been improving the look of their stores over the past few years.
We have one close to my house, but there are hardly ever any cars in the parking lot. I've been in a few times, but it was soo empty, as in barely anything on the shelves it's so strange!
Although I did go there on black friday one time and got a great down comforter for super cheap!
We go to Walmart, it's the closest and cheapest. It's pretty much our one stop place, I love it.
I don't routinely shop there but when I do its nice since the store is always less crowded than Target and Walmart.
I do make an annual trip there for Joe Boxer pjs for the kids' Christmas pajamas. Nice selection, cute styles and wide variety of sizes.
Obama chia pets, they are the only place that sells them. They make great gag gifts, especially for white elephant. Other than that I went there during Christmas to price match stuff from Target that was gone.
When the hot video game is sold out everywhere, I've been told you can find it at kmart. I couldn't find a bag to store my Christmas tree anywhere, but kmart had dozens of them. Their after holiday sales are pretty terrific, and they usually have a good amount of leftovers.
I love Kmart. I grew up with Kmart in my small hometown. However, a lot of Kmarts are closing. Maybe they are in the process of closing their doors. I think the clothes are cute and my kids love looking at the toys. I do like Target, but most things cost more than Walmart, so I find better deals at Walmart, but do my "I just have to spend some money" at Target.
I shop at K-mart occasionally. We go there when we need socks (they're almost always buy one get one half off). We stopped in the other day because hubby needed some dickie pants. We also got a kiddie pool, lol. We would have bought an mp3 player but there was nobody in the electronics dept and we didn't feel like hunting people down, so they lost a sale. They should at least have a buzzer or something to alert the staff. I try to avoid Walmart and don't shop Target too much either, unless we're looking for something specific. We get all our household stuff at Family Dollar, cheaper and faster to get through.
Just easter candy...it's the cheapest in town.
