Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?

I was reading the news this morning and saw that eight retailers will be closing many of their stores over the year...

sorry to disappoint those who thought I might be leaving mamapedia...

I was kinda sad to see that Seara/K-Mart are closing stores...I hope not the ones in our area. I like Sears and K-Mart. I love that I can put stuff on lay-away and not pull out a huge wad of money on things that I don't NEED right away...I do this for summer clothes for my boys...

JCP - not so much - I used to LOVE shopping there but the quality has gone down, that I can't buy their products.

Barnes & Noble - we have a HUGE store in here our town center - however the books are WWWAAAYYY over priced. So I don't shop there. Won't be missing that one.

Best Buy - right next door to B&N...not sure if the one in our town center will be closing or not. I don't mind shopping there.

Game Stop - sorry - but there are literally 10 stores in a 10 mile radius of our home. WWWAAAYYY to many!!

Radio Shack - I would hope that the one in our town doesn't close. We don't shop there often - but we go there for a lot of electronic things..

Office Depot - ours is always busy. However, Staples just opened up 2 miles away and is giving them a run for their money.

Office Max - never shopped there so I won't even know it's gone.

SO what stores would you miss if they closed their doors near you?

What can I do next?

Kmart. Their prices have gotten much higher in the last few years especially on household items, but I love their deals on jeans, shoes, and clearance items.

Borders Books opened a brand new store a few blocks from my house...sadly, it was only opened for a year and a half before they closed all their stores. I miss their coffee shop. It was nice to be able to go for a walk and stop in for a coffee and pastry. I'm not a book person, my husband is, so the closing of Barnes and Noble will be another disappointment.

I love JCP's Arizona brand clothing. It's good quality for a good price. I don't want them to close:(

We only have 1 Game Stop, so I hope they don't intend to close this location. I see that of all the stores on the list, Game Stop has the most locations overall.

We've been to Bust Buy on occasion, but I don't care about the rest of that list.

the only one that made me sad when i read about it yesterday was barnes and noble. yes, their books are overpriced but for my family it's a hangout place and we never leave without buying books for all of us. my kids love browsing their books, sitting and reading to decide which ones they want. i always buy from their bargain books.
i do download books on my kindle and nook, but my kids seem not interested in reading electronically downloaded books. they prefer real books, and so do i.
i wouldn't miss kmart, sears, jcpenney, radio shack etc. i have never bought anything in any of those stores.

Barnes & Nobel we'd miss a lot.
Especially since so many other book sellers have closed up.
The others we've not been to in years.
Malls have more and more empty stores.
Town centers are trendy at first but the novelty wears off the the stores are high priced.
Amazon and online retailers are replacing many physical stores.
It means business is booming for UPS and Fex Ex.
The US Post Office would be doing well too if the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA) were repealed.
It requires the USPS to prefund 75 years' worth of future health care benefit payments to retirees within a ten-year time span – a requirement to which no other government organization is subject.
The bill was supported by heavy lobbies from UPS and Fed Ex but it gives them unfair advantage.

I do most of my shopping at The Real Canadian Superstore. It is a large grocery store, with a gas bar, but also has clothing, electronics, toys, books, stationary, drugstore, seasonal and housewares. (Think like your big Super Target, but more groceries, less of everything else.) I would really miss it. It has the best prices, I collect the club points and it has heated underground parking (awesome when it is -45 degrees).

I like taking my kids to Barnes and Nobel to the kids' section. They have events for kids, storytimes, toys, SO many books that I'd never heard of, and we just have a good time. If they behave very well we'll get them some hot chocolate and a cookie from the cafe area. I might buy them a book if I find one that is really a good deal (kids' books tend to have great sales). I was sad to lose Borders--was dear to me. When I was in high school my friends and I would meet at Borders to work on our chemistry or English homework, over bowls of soup with peasant bread. We had a ton of fun there.

Best Buy? We don't really go very often anymore--try to stay away from it as much as possible since my husband tends to do terrible impulse buys there.

JCP - They have a good selection of kids & plus size, and some nice window treatments. But, their customer service is ROTTEN, unless you are buying from the home store.

Sears - we get appliances there, and I get Land's End stuff there. Nothing else. Kmart - haven't been there in years.

Luckily Target isn't a candidate for closing, so I can breathe easily. I might have to stage a hunger strike if they closed ;-)

Very sad to see so many going under, but no surprise. They build way too many too close together. In this day of everyone having cars, mobility to get to another store shouldn't be that big of a deal. (Now gas prices are skyrocketing again.)

Several years ago Circuit City was coming to the KC area by leaps and bounds, some of the stores were actually built and never even opened up. Now after many years, most of them have not even been converted to anything else, just vacant eyesores. At the time, they couldn't compete with Best Buy.
One of them is being torn down, right, never ever opened, was a brand new building, now destroyed to build an IKEA.

We are inundated with CVS pharmacies all over the place with Walgreens across the street and / or most of them within a few blocks. Same with Lowe's and Home Depot. Mennard's was supposed to come here, but that has been scratched now.
Staples is building a new store across the street from where Office Depot closed.
Have you noticed that new car lots line the highways with huge inventories, building more and more of those all the time, yet to leave the old ones vacant eyesores.
This "throw away society" is crazy.
THERE IS NO WAY THEY CAN ALL WIN! But Walmart can pop up every where.
I could think of many more too.

JCP when they had sales items, Radio shack, Best Buy, Sears for household items, Office Depot, Barnes and Nobles - These are stores you don't shop often, but in the back of your mind, if you knew you wanted a particular thing you could go there to get it

The place I shop the most is Target. Would miss it greatly, if it were to close.

I like JCPenny's changes. We've shopped there more now, than before. Best Buy is for infrequent purchases. I buy almost all my books through Amazon, either used or Kindle. Half Price Books is a nice outing, which we do occasionally. PetCo/PetSmart sees us regularly.

I don't shop at any of the others you mention.

We don't have a lot of those close. Our local JCP isn't great, but I do use them for my hair products because it's the cheapest way to get salon quality stuff.

The closest B&N is in Annapolis (I think). I used to go to them all the time and read and relax, but I have maybe 2 free minutes in a day now...not enough time to go somewhere to read and relax...I get that time at home when I can find it!

Our Best Buy, Game Stop, and Office Depot are all new within the last 10 years, hopefully they stay.

Radio Shack never crosses my mind - ever.

I would fall out if our Target closed. We have Target, Wal-Mart, and K-Mart. I can't tell you the last time I went into K-Mart. Wal-Mart makes me feel like I need to bathe after I leave. So we normally do Target. I really hope they never close. Luckily where I live, the economy is pretty strong (I say this as I'm hoping my job doesn't disappear), but I doubt things around here will close. The ones that have, haven't closed because of economy...it's been fires or health code violations - Fun!

I never really shop at any of those stores so it doesn't really effect me all that much. I do get my hair cut at jcpenney though and that's only because it's my co workers mom that does it (I wouldn't trust anyone else there, lol). So, I would have to ask her what will happen if they close.

If my WalMart and Aldi's ever close, I don't know how I will afford to feed my family, unless we switch to rice and beans.

I would miss Target, because that's where I shop for all my household stuff. They are cheaper and cleaner than WalMart, and always have what I want on the shelf.

We lost our KMart about four years ago. No great loss there...overpriced in a serious way. I would LOVE to lose our ShopKo, which is the biggest ripoff store I've ever been in. A Rubbermaid tote that costs six bucks at the other stores costs $20 at ShopKo, and when they have a "50% OFF" sale people actually go and buy them, thinking "Oh, what a great deal!" Nope, sorry, you're still paying more than what I pay. That speaks a lot towards consumer negligence, though.

I don't shop in either our Radio Shack or GameStop, so no loss there. The other stores we don't have. ;)

I would miss JCP....their jeans rock for my sons. Love some of the new product lines + the markdowns are great. With JCP, I know I can walk in & find what I need for my family.

I would NOT miss Kohls. Even my sons avoid it. We live in a small town, & the next larger town over got a Kohls.....so therefore everybody in our entire county wears the same clothes. No diversity whatsoever. :(

I never, ever use KMart. We use Radio Shack....maybe 1x year.

Barnes & Noble....love the store, hate the prices. Buy online more & more frequently, especially closeout book stores!

Best Buy gets a lot of our electronic $$.

& My family loves Cabelas over Bass Pro. :)

I miss K-Mart horribly. Our Walmart raised their prices as soon as they closed their doors. Same thing with Walmart fabric department. Hobby Lobby doubled their fabric prices as soon as Walmart announced they would stop doing the bolts of fabric.
