Awful Spit Up

I think this is normal for some babies. Both of my first 2 spit up tons. But... with my third, hardly any spit up. You know what I realized, the third one has a shut off valve. She knows when to stop herself. She doesn't drink nearly as much as the first 2 did and she is much much slower. I could have probably given my first 2 kids a 2 liter bottle of formula and they would have sucked the entire thing down in record speed and cried for more. And then they would spit up. So maybe she is getting too much too fast. Nothing wrong with it if she is happy, but if too much goes in, it will come up too.

My pediatriction always told me that spit up is just a laundry problem, nothing more. My first spit up horribly. We still found random dried spit up in wierd spots long after he stopped spitting up. This too shall pass.... Just keep up on the laundry!

well my son was the same way - NEVER got "full", just kept eating. i had to ration him lol. they tell you infants won't overeat - mine did. he would just eat and eat until it overflowed!

She may have a small esophagus - I had that trouble and spit up all the time too.

Do you have a pediatric gastroenterologist? If you don't, you should. They can help.

My daughter spit up easily for her first 7-8 months. In those days, babies were supposed to eat no more often than every 4 hours. My daughter took smaller meals more often, and it turned out, that was exactly what she needed. Any time I tried to coax her to nurse longer, she got too full and spit up the last several mouthfuls.

When I finally allowed her to nurse on demand, the spitting up mostly stopped, and we were both so much happier and more comfortable. It's hard to keep a hungry baby happy for an hour and a half.

Your little is possibly needing a much deeper/longer burping, or perhaps a couple of burpings during the meal. Some babies have a very hard time getting those air bubbles out, until they come up later by themselves. pushing food up in front of them.

But babies do tend to spit up fairly easily. It's one way they achieve portion control.

My middle child was a "spitter" and she was also the biggest and healthiest of my three kids.

I always had a burp rag on my shoulder and became amazing at catching what came up. I wish my reflexes were still that good!

Please see a pediatric gastroenterologist. If you have a local childrens hospital they'll have an entire department.

One of my kids did this, ended up having to see a gastro doc. He had a pyloric stenosis, had surgery at 6 weeks and has been good ever since, if yours can't keep anything down and/or it smells rancid like it has soured I say go to the e.r. and push the issue, I had to. If I didn't nothing would have been done. He was happy and gaining weight good as well. Come to find out his ped had the same answer for everything, "he'll grow out of it". Got to a point I changed docs when he was almost or right at 2 cuz he needed speach help and the ped was lying on records so my kid couldn't get help. That's just my 2 cents about what I had to do and my suggestion, hope u get something figured out, best of luck to u.

I currently have a 4 month old who is the same way. My 5 year old did it too, when he was a baby. He grew out of it. I never had him see a pediatric gastroenterologist. I think once he was about 8 months old, it kind of lessened and then went away. I wouldn't worry unless it was making her fussy. That being said, my current baby sleeps on a special wedge made by a PT and ever since he got it, he has slept through the night:)

Both my daughter and grandson were exactly the same way. I went through a ton of bibs trying to keep her shirt dry and clean! Like your LO, she was happy and gaining weight so the pedi was not concerned. I just had to live with it. That's why I got her on solids ASAP.

I have no advice to give you, but lots of empathy. My daughter was a champion spitter when she was a wee thing. Yes, it is annoying to change clothes so often (I gave up doing it every single time at a certain point - as long as we were not going anywhere and we weren't soaked through, I'd let it go a few times). I can also give you hope: she will outgrow this phase. Good luck!

We had a similar situation (only I kept up the breastfeeding and did a crazy elimination diet as suggested by the Ped to see if we could stop the crazy spit ups). After 6 weeks of cutting all cruciferous veggies, citrus, tomatoes and dairy including trace ingredients in boxed foods, I accidentally discovered that, when she would nurse while in my Maya Wrap sling, she didn't spit up, but when she nursed flat(on the Boppy or next to me in bed) she would spit up a ton! When I started to prop her upper body during the feeding(not just after), it all stopped and I went back to my tomatoes, broccoli, milk and cheese and everything was great! :)
