My daughters'name is Alessandra!
And we call her Ale, Ally, but my favorite one is when we gave her her bottle, (we called bottles babas), so we will say; Ali baba! hahaha get it?
Hi! My husband and I are expecting a baby girl this summer and we are trying to decide between two names. My husband is from Europe and I'm from the US. We are debating about Alexandra and Alessandra (pronounced al-la-sandra) (middle name will be Savina (sa-veen-a)) - yes, they are very similar and as she grows up we will most likely call her Ali. I'm discovering that many of my friends and family are having a had time pronouncing and spelling Alessandra - I didn't think it was that difficult. My husband really likes Alessandra and I like both - just wanted to see what you mamas thought!
WOW! Thank you everyone for all your replies :) We've decided to go with Alessandra Savina! So excited for my baby girl's arrival :) thank you again!!

I actually like Alessandra and pronounced it right before I read the explanation. I think it's pretty and different. =)
I think Alessandra is beautiful. People will generally misspell it and you'll have to correct them, though.
So long as that won't bother you, I'd say go with Alessandra. As I said, it's gorgeous. :)
My Husband is from Europe. I am from the US, Hawaii.
Our kids have European names and names of my heritage.
It does NOT matter, about how others will pronounce it. You simply tell them or correct them.
My kids' names and last names, are pronounced pretty straightforward. To me. BUT anytime anyone, can mispronounce it.
So what.
People even mispronounce simple names.
My kids LOVE their names, middle name and last name.
It is not English, mind you.
They have beautiful names.
I LOVE the names you listed.
It is NOT hard to pronounce. At all.
I personally like: Alessandra.
That is NOT hard to pronounce, at all.
And I love, Savina.
And, not all kids are called a nickname per shortening their name.
My kids are not.
I tell the Teachers or anyone, what their name is. And my kids certainly speak up too, and tell people what their names are. Or what they like to be called.
It is up to them.
I would go with what you like. I think Alessandra sounds beautiful.
My friend at work has a granddaughter named Alessandra. They call her Sandy for short. I think that name is beautiful!
Alessandra is beautiful!
My vote:
I love it. Alessandra Savina is beautiful.
Alessandra! It is not way out there but very very unique!!
I LOVE Alessandra Savina! How beautiful- and unique.
I LOVE Allesandra. So much more feminine-sounding than Alexandra, less harsh, but still strong. Your friends and family will learn quickly. Don't worry about anyone else. It's a beautifyl name.
I have an Alli - Allison - it's a fun nickname.
I LOVE Alexandra! It's my first daughter's name and has always been a favorite name. Just a beautiful name!
The names that you chose flow together beautifully! Congratulations!
Alessandra is soooo much more unique and beautiful than Alexandra. Go with your gut!
I think you are more likely to get a naturaly 'Ali' out of it if you go with Allesandra. Alexandra is more easily shortened to Alex. Plus its easier to say so the family members who struggle with Allesandra will easily say Alexandra and call her that instead of Ali.
I think Alessandra is beautiful. However Alexandra is a great name too. Good Luck let us know what you decide! Congratulations!
Either are SO beautiful!! To me, one doesn't sound better then the other. The middle name flows perfectly with both.
Keep in mind that a common nickname for Alexandra would be "Alex." "Ali" would go better with Alessandra (though I've heard it more as a nickname for Allison). When you say the two names together, I think Alessandra Savinia sounds better as the "x" sound in "Alex" stops the flow a bit. While Alessandra may be a more unique name, that's what makes it nice. I always think about how hard a name will be for a teacher to pronounce, but these days, there are so many different names out there (my kids included!). Everyone will get used to it. You will have to correct people, and that can get annoying, but go with what you are comfortable with. I say go unique. Just hope your last name doesn't begin with "S" because you have to think about what her initials would spell. Believe me, I try to think of EVERYTHING when it comes to names.
I would pick Alessandra.. sure it will get misspelled, but even common names get misspelled. It is memorable though, and it is so unique! Also, with Alexandra, your daughter will probably get nicknamed "alex" or "lexi" in school (at least every alexandra I knew did). They might use "ally" or possibly "sandra" with Alessandra.
But both names are beautiful names! Go with whatever you and your husband like best!
PS: if you like "X" names (i really do) you could always do "Alessandra Xavina" Pronounced "za-veen-a"
Just a thought...
Alessandra is a beautiful name. She will probably spend a percentage of her life telling people "it's Alessandra, not Alexandra," but so what? I am almost 50, and still correcting people on the correct spelling of my name. I have a friend whose name is pronounced 'Mara' but spelled 'Maura' and she still has to tell people her name does not rhyme with 'Laura.' Hopefully, your daughter will appreciate having a beautiful, unique name, and shrug off the occasional mistake.
My daughters name is Braleigh and I can't tell you how many times I had to tell my husband how to spell it before she was born. And then after she was born every one was always like "Bailey"? But anyways, I wouldn't worry about what other people think or how they spell it. My name is Stacy and my Aunt and Grandmother still spell it wrong! IMO, I like Alessandra
I love Alessandra (and I pronounced right as I read it,so it is not that difficult. I have a few nieces and nephews with "different" names, so I think the unique ones are good!
I love them both but I think with the middle name Savina
I would go with Alexandra (not so many "s's".
Beautiful name!
Congatulations! :)
I like Alessandra much better. It's very soft and graceful sounding...and I know some Alexandra's and love them dearly, but they get called "Alex" or "Al" which to me are boys names, and it's a much harsher sounding name.
Your family will get used to it, no matter what you decide. Congratulations!
Our neighbors daughter is Alex-Sandra - pronounced Alexsandra - I don't think it's difficult at all and i think it's a BEAUTIFUL name!!
YOU GO!!!!
Alessandra sounds good to me! I pronounced it the way you described as I read it... I had the same issue with my DD's name. She is Alina (a-LEE-na) and people always pronounced it a-LEAH-na... It really didn't take long for them to get it right, expecially if I politely corrected them.
LOVE Alessandra Savina!!!
People ALWAYS have a difficult time with names, even ones from their own culture, much less others. People WILL misspell it (people misspell Jane, Sarah, & Megan), it's no big deal. People will ask how to spell it (people ask how to spell Jane "With a y?", Sarah "A or ah?", Megan "How many e's? With an H?") and people will mispronounce it "Jan?, Say-rah? Meegan?".
No name is "bulletproof". So don't worry about other people.
Alexandra! It's beautiful, and hard to flub up! With the other, she will hear elise-andra, Alice-andra, and so on, and rarely will people get it right the first time.
I personally like the name and the spelling. Congratulations to the both of you! :)
I LOVE Alessandra, but seems like it should be spelled Alesandra, unless you want it pronounced as Ales-sandra...I think it is beautiful Alesandra Savina, lucky you I had 3 boys...
I LOVE Alessandra! It's different but pretty, and totally not weird like some names you don't hear often. And I think it's great to honor one's genetic background =) I think it flows better with the middle name too, Alexandra has the hard "and" sound, the "aund" sounds better with Savina. That's a pretty name too! Lucky girl!
Alessandra is a beautiful name! I like the middle name too but you might want to be careful, kids can be cruel and it does rhyme (I think if I am pronouncing it right) with a part of the female anatomy.
They are both nice...I think you should keep both in mind and one will grow on you more as your due date gets closer. Pretty soon, one will become the obvious choice.
I've noticed that families get used to names once they're actually in use. My dad even commented on the fact that he thought he'd have a hard time with my nephew's name but adjusted quickly. Might I recommend not sharing the name for future kids. Our son's name, Lucca, is Italian and is taking some getting used to for our families. We didn't decide on a name until after he was born, so our families couldn't criticize!
I like them both and I love the middle name, I prefer the middle with Alexandra but that doesn't really matter since you don't say them together all that often. I think it would be great for you to use alessandra I am one who prefers the less common names.
I like Alexandra better. Alessandra reminds me of Alejandro for some reason, I guess just the way it looks. It is pretty tho too. I like Alex better.
I like Alexandra paired with Savina . I think Alessandra Savina is too many "s"'s .
In like Alessandra but maybe you could spell it Allasandra like it is pronounced. Just a thought, I like the original spelling. You won't be able to please everyone and in time they will be able to say and spell her name. So don't worry about those that are having a problem now they will get use to her name.
I looked up the name to see if it had a meaning and it doesn't so you can say it means "beautiful"
I like Alessandra. My son has a boy in his Kindergarten class named Alessandro and so one has a problem with it...
I have a friend with a daughter named Alessandra. I think it's beautiful and less common, but my friend's daughter has found that people often call her 'Alexandra'. I think either is lovely!
Alessandra is beautiful. Go with what you want its your baby and your having her. I still correct people on my sons name and he is only 2. People will learn how to spell her name so don't worry about that.
