Baby Head Circumference at 6 Months

Hi there,
We've just had the 6 months appointment and the doctor said that my son's head is a bit larger, it's 46.5 cm (100th percentile), but he also mentioned that his head had always been on the higher side (37.5 cm at birth and 44.5 at 4 months) and that's why he was not really concerned. He wants though to see my son at 9 months, just to make sure everything is fine. Since on my dad's side people have bigger heads and my son has reached even exceeded the milestones for his age, I hope there's no health issue involved and I guess these details made our pediatrician to not be concerned about this. Any insights on this are highly appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. He's in the 70% and 72% for his height and weight.

What can I do next?

My boys have big heads, too- one was always around 75th for height and weight and 90th for head, the other is 95th-100th across the board. Always good to keep track of these things, but there is a range for a reason...there is a kid for every point on the graph :) I know this isn't true, but those of us with Charlie Brown heads like to say bigger head, bigger brains!

ETA- LOL, LZ!!! So true! We have frequent head versus shirt battles, especially jammies!!

Both of my children had 95+ percentile heads (and 50-60 percentile height).

My younger one even had an "unusual cranial spurt" where his head grew a disproportionate amount between months 4 and 6. I had to take him back every two weeks, to be measured and checked out between months 6 and 8. As terrifying as it was to consider all the things it could be, he was just fine. He just has a big head. :)

Our biggest concern? Many shirts are designed for those 50th percentile heads, so they are too small to fit over his head.

My family all had big heads, same with my husbands family, our daughter never had a chance.,

She loves hats, but unless they are knitted, she has a hard time finding one to fit.

I'm glad your doctor is keeping up with this, but I am sure it will all be fine. By the way, we have always told our daughter her "head had to be big to hold all of her common sense and brains.. "

My son has a little head, but so do I. I had to wear a kid's helmet last time I went skiing. Head circumference is a tip-off that there could be a problem, it's just a hint to look for other problems. Since your son isn't having any other issues, don't worry about it and just keep checking like your doctor ordered. Heads come in all sizes, just like people!

people come in different sizes. so do heads..

my friends son has a big head.. the dr noted it in his chart.. then he measured the dads head.. and said familial large head.. seriously.. I was there.. I saw it.. if there are big heads in the family.. that is probably where it comes from.

and some kids grow into their heads. their heads seem very large.. when they are young but as they get older . their body catches up...

If you're really freaking out about it , you could always request testing ( I believe would be a simple ultrasound ), to give you peace of mind.

If the doc isn't worried, I don't think you should though & probably not worth the cost.

My son's head has always been in the 90s, in terms of percentile. His height and weight are like your son's, in the 70s. As long as his growth follows a consistent curve, you honestly have nothing to worry about. But if you need an ultrasound for peace of mind, it's perfectly okay to request one.

With my son, the only effect of his having a huge head is that he thinks his dad's baseball caps are common property (my son is 7). So there are all these annoying arguments about who lost whose hat when. Really not a problem, in the scheme of things ;).

My kid has a big head. Pedi said the same thing. He was meeting his milestones. I showed the doc a picture of my hubby. Doc said, we'll just keep an eye on it, but as long as he's meeting his milestones he's good :) He's just a big kid with a big head.

My son has always had a huge head, and there has never been a single health issue. If your Dr. is not worried, don't be worried!!
