i appreciate all of the advice, thanku. i am amazed of some of the responses. my son is an allergy baby and gags whenever i give him food. whether its mashed potatoes or oatmeal he shakes his head no when i place a spoon near his mouth. i am very concern. i do nurse my son but i afraid its just not enough. i spoke with his pediatrician and they placed him on a viamin supplement so he can receive the nutrients thats he not receiving. my little guy is allergic to soaps, eggs, whole milk and god knows what else, we are to see an allergy doctor on the 28th of this month to see what steps i need to take to start him on a safe and healthy transistion to foods when he decides to start eating. i attended a class that was being sponsered by Weisman Children for picky eaters i am amazed by some of the information that was shared, they offer nutrional support for mothers and care givers like myself so i intend to except all of the help and support they give. thanku once again for your help and advice.

What can I do next?

How old is your son again?
I can assure you with almost total confidence that since you are breastfeeding, he is getting everything that he needs. Breastmilk is truly nature's perfect, most whole food. It knows exactly what he needs.

If you're supplementing w/ a WHOLE FOOD (ie: not synthetic!) vitamin, that's totally fine too & will help to fill in any missing "gaps", etc... that may arrise.

How has his weight gain been? How about his overall developmental goals?--Is he staying on his own track more/less?

Hang in there, mama! He'll start eating more when he feels that it's safe for him to do so!

I recommend you check out the book "My Child Won't Eat" by Dr. Gonzalez. I was so worried about my child not eating until I read this book and it totally changed my thinking!

If you are eating a balance diet and nursing him frequently than he shouldn't really need any supplements unless he's over the age of 1 of 2. BF babies have all they need in a mother's milk. You are better off just nursing him if he has so many allergies. When it comes to soaps, and bathing do it less frequently maybe 2-3 times per week. While this may sound like a strange thing to do. Frequent bathing will actually cause more skin issues than lack of bathing. How old is your little guy?

I dont have a child who is allergic to foods. I do have a theory. I think all people, big and small, naturally avoid foods that sickens them. I think its a natural thing. I also think that kids crave what their body wants, much like a pregnant woman. I think that, we, as a people, dismiss these "cravings". I say, eat what your body tells you...or, in your case, what your son tells you. I am not at all suggesting choclolate chip cookies, rather, whatever he wants. Kids will not starve themselves. They actually can get by with a handfull of foods. Another thing to think of, is your reaction. You dont make a big deal, he wont make a big deal.
I have always thought that young children need alot of carbs. Protein is absolutely necessary. Again, they crave what they need. Just my opinion.
Good Luck in finding your answer,
M:)

My daughter has allergies, some pretty severe(peanut). She did not eat solid food until she was around 2 and a half years old. She was fine and got all the nutrition she needed from me(i breastfed her the entire time). My son started eating solid food early around 5 months old, and he has no allergies at all. I think sometimes babies just know. My daughter would take small tastes of things, but would spit things out that I later found out she was allergic to. My son just ate. I would not worry too much if you are breastfeeding. My daughter is almost 5 and has outgrown most of her allergies, she still is allergic to egg but it is getting less and they expect her to outgrow it soon. And she is allergic to peanut which she will probably never outgrow, but we went from multiple allergies(Dairy, egg, peanut, tree-nuts, rice, rye, to name a few) to one(peanut) that she will have the rest of her life. I am pretty sure my nursing her had a direct result on her outgrowing these, since I was not breastfed and neither was brother and we both have multiple food allergies. My nephew also was a slow to start eater and had some allergic reactions to food and was nursed very often, but now at 3 and a half years old, he has no allergies at all and eats everything.
