Baby with Fever

Just wanted to know if any other Moms ever encountered this - I have a nine month old who had his check up last Thurdsday and received some vaccines. He is also getting 2 more teeth coming in. He ran low grade temps for a few days afterwards, which I attributed to the teething or vaccines. Tuesday night, he developed a temp of 102.5 and has been running temps consistently ever since. I called the MD yesterday and they just reiterated things I already knew about how to treat a fever. My concern is that he is otherwise asymptomatic - no diarrhea, no cold symptoms, etc. I took him in to see the MD today and he felt it was some sort of virus that hasn't manifested itself in any particular way. He told me it could sometimes take 5 days to see an end to the fevers and continue doing what we are doing, and call if any new symptoms arise. It is very concerning to me to not know the actual source of the fever and to just chalk it up to a virus. Any else ever experience this with a little one? Do you remember how long it took to get through?

What can I do next?

My oldest who is now 9, used to get "fever of unknown origin" all the time when he was younger. From age 1 through about age 8. He would get one every other month or so. In the beginning I would take him to the doctor everytime. Told it was viral and it would be gone after a few days. I just learned to manage the fever at home and would only take him in if it lasted more than 3 days, or was accompanied by other symptoms. He would get really high ones, though, 102, 103, 104. He seems to have outgrown it now. It is not unusual to have a fever with no other symptoms. You can look up "neutropenia" or "cyclic neutropenia"

Yeah, I just went through that, it ran through all my kids, except the fever got high, so I am happy to hear that the fever is not too crazy. The only symptom they had was fever and of course the fever made them lethargic and cranky but no runny nose. Oh I forgot, the middle cherub had a super swollen lymph node, it was HUGE! But the others did not have any symptoms at all. Wish you the best, it took about a week for each of mine...

Hmmmm. A virus doesn't have to have obvious symptoms other than a fever. He has a virus in his system that is causing the fever. The virus isn't manifesting it's self as a cold. There are many ways that a virus affects us and many symptoms are not visible.

I've had fevers with no other symptoms except a general feeling of malaise. Your baby is too young to let you know how he's feeling. He probably is feeling achy and may have a sensitive tummy. Try to relax. He'll be fine once the virus has run it's course.

Yeah. Sometimes they just have fevers. If there are no other symptoms I agree to just treat the fever and keep a close eye on him. I know it's hard b/c they can't talk and you so desperately want to know what's wrong, but go by non verbal cues and look for any sensitivities or overly fussiness. If he's acting fine otherwise don't worry too much.

Fevers do come from viruses without any accompanying symptoms, and this frequently happens in children. So yes it could very likely be a virus he picked up at the doctors when you took him for his checkup. Grocery carts and doctors offices are the two of the most likely places to pick up a virus. It could also still be related to the vaccines, but you need to give a list of which vaccines he had and his previous symptoms reactions following these vaccines. But that too is possible. Contrary to popular belief, it is not possible to get a fever from teething unless drainage causes irritation that turns into something like an ear infection, but usually what happens is that teething children put things in their mouth, especially their fingers and pick up germs and get sick and people see a rise in temps during teething and attribute it to teething instead of the real cause of picking up more viruses due to the fact the children are putting more things in their mouths. If it is a fever from a virus it can last about a week, fever from vaccines are usually of shorter duration. You are going to run into many more fevers of no known cause over the course of childhood. I remember being a teen and have a fever of 103. No other symptoms just fever and tiredness. My Mom didn't even bother taking me to the doc since there were no other symptoms and I sure I had plenty throughout my childhood. Both my kids have had them and really not much to do but watch them, take them to ER if it goes over 104 without meds bringing it down right away. But I am one to let it go unmedicated unless it gets over 102. Hang in there it is hard to watch your kids suffer.

The fever can be related to the vaccines. My daughter had this happen 2x. We were told then that any fever up to 2 weeks out from the shot, could potentially be related to the vaccines.

It is also possible that he picked something while at the dr. office - strep, a bug.

It is also possible that his teething has started an ear infection that is causing the fever.

It is also possible that he a food that is causing the fever. This happened to my son. He would spike 102+ fevers for a week, every 2-3 weeks. I finally started a food journal, saw a pattern, had him tested and confirmed. We removed the food (pears) from his diet and the fevers went away.

What vaccines did he get? Did you read the side effects for them? I think with some you can get a fever several days later. Otherwise just be sure it doesn't get too high and it should go away. If not go back to the doctor.

When my daughter was two, she had a fever of 105 with no other symptoms. We had to give her motrin/tylenol every two hours just to get it down to 103! The Dr ran all kinds of test, and found nothing. They finally put her her in the hospital so they could keep her hydrated. That was the only thing that seemed to break it. They also put an antibiotic in her IV, just to do something. I don't know what finally broke it, but it lasted four days. They said it was a virus. Scared us to death, but they were doing everything so...?

I totally understand. I just went through this. My son is 8 months and 1/2 and he got a high fever of 101.4 on Monday and his fever keep coming up and down. He did not have any diarreha, vomiting etc. He has his 2 bottom teeth which i think he is teething and thats why he got his fever. It lasted about 4 to 5 days and is doing much better. Just give him something cold to chew on and that helps with the teething situation. He still seems kid of depressed because his teeth hurt:( but dont worry you are not the only one going through this kind of situation. I gave him medicine Advil Infants which worked very good the first time i gave him. I was giving hm Acetaminophen which did not do anything for him. But hang on there and this will eventually pass.
Good Luck:)
