Well i've found out that the dr was wrong. My daughter doesn't have the flu. She just had a touch of the stomach flu. My son spiked a 104 temp the other night and we took him to the dr and found out that he actually has a bacterial infection. But we're still dealing with the watery poops and major diaper rash. His poor lil bottom's bleeding from it. Thanks for all the advice on the flu. Now anyone have any advice on the other? TIA

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well my son goes to the dr today but he's still not doing too well. He still has really watery poop and a really bad diaper rash. My daughter's 100% better.

Have you tried the pedialite popsicels? They kids will think they are getting a treat when it's actually good for them and helps with the fluid intake. My kids love them when they are sick and don't even know the diff..
Good luck to you!

your dr office is telling you the truth. there is nopthing to do but treat the symptoms and try to help with keeping them comfortable. try pedialtye popiscles, flat ginger ale, clear broth. no dairy products .you can try the BRAT diet which is bananas, applesauce and toast but wait until the vomiting has stopped for at least eight hours. the virus can last for one day until a week

Hi! This sounds crazy, but I once had a doctor tell me to let the kids have lollipops when they were feeling nauseous. Something about the sugar in them makes their stomach less upset. Sounds nuts, but it really does work. Plus, it makes them feel a little better mentally because just about every kid loves lollipops! Give it a try. Other than that, they're right, they do just have to let it run its course. Little things like popsicles will even help with pushing fluids.

Sometimes you have to be a little creative. Try popsicles, I have even frozen Pedialite myself (Pedialite is like the Gatorade for children).

A little about me:
I am a 42 yr old mom of 2 boys, ages 20 yrs and 14 yrs. My husband and I are about to celebrate our 21st anniversery. I work full time as an optician.

Alternate motrin and tylenol to help with the aches. Pedialyte is great, but neither one of my kids ever liked it straight out of the bottle, so I'd crush up some ice and make slushees out of it for them.

Since the flu is a virus, there really isn't much they can do for your children. Viruses do just have to run the course. Ways to get them to drink more fluids....try Pedialyte. I mix the plain/no flavor kind with their favorite juice. Also try the pedialyte popsickles...my two girls LOVE them. They ask for them when they aren't sick. Also...jello is good too.
Wish I could say something to make it easier...good luck!

Maybe some Tylenol if they are achy and some Pedialite popsicles to keep them hydrated.

Hi, A.! I had the same problem with my kids when they were ill. The doctors always said to give them Pedalyte, but they didn't like it. When they get sick, I have learned to give them 7-Up, they think it is "Daddy's Mountain Dew"! I have also, tried just plain old Kool-Aid, and caffeine-free pop. Also, by putting ice cubes in their sippy cups, they thought that was so cool. I would alternate the Tylenol & Motrin, and just let 'flu' run its course. I know that adults can take Tamiflu, so I don't know if there is anything like that for kids, but I know it helped me personally. I hope this helps. I hope they get better VERY soon, for their sake, and your sanity.

Hi. I am sorry to hear about your children. I have had the same problem with my 3 kids at one time or another. I don't know what you have tried, but my doctor had me give my kids popcicles when my kids didn't want to drink much. I also would take small amounts of juice and mix with water so there would be flavor. I know the best thing is clear liquids. My one wouldn't drink water so I gave her things like 7-up, but I would get diet so there was less sugar and it is caffeine free. Also I gave them chicken broth in a cup and told them it was soup in a cup which they liked because it was different from the other stuff. I hope some of these ideas help. Just try anything that they might like or make it into a game of some sort with the older child and see if that works. It is just a hard time for all of you when they won't drink. I have had my children hopitalized for dehydration and they then discovered it was not the flu, but rodovirus. Good luck and Best Wishes to you and your family!

Comfort foods, like applesauce and some sliced fruit, pedialyte and pedialyte popsicles. Steer clear of dairy products if the kids are at all snotty, it will make it worse.
However, if there is diarrhea involved, some yogurt will help.

Influenza is a virus so there is nothing the doctor or you can do about it but make sure the kids stay hydrated and as comfortable as would be possible. Alternate doses of ibuprofen and tylenol every few hours will help tremendously. And don't forget most viruses take around 21 days before they are entirely eradicated by the body, so don't be surprised if the kids seem like they are still a little run down after the worst of it passes. Hang in there, it will pass!!

PS..if they aren't using the potty (to pee) at least a few times a day I would consider a trip to the ER...the vomiting will dehydrate them and the ER can start an IV to help.
