Hi moms, my son who will be 3 in a couple of wks is sleeping in his own room now. We bought a full size mattress so he has the space. We did not buy a box spring bec. he's a mover and we're afraid he will fall. Is there a bed rail out there that can be used for mattress only situation? There are tons out there but it usually connects on the otherside withe help of the box spring underneath the mattress if that makes any sense. Your input is appreciated, thanks!
I wouldn't imagine that a fall from a mattress on the floor would even hurt. I wouldn't worry about it.
If the mattress is on the floor w/o boxspring there is no need for a rail even if he does manage to roll out of a full size bed he is not going to get hurt the fall probably won't even wake him up.
Our 19 month old daughter sleeps on her toddler mattress on the floor and we have used the Magic Bumpers for several months now. They are a dense foam bumper that goes under the sheet and in our case over the mattress pad. You'll need to put something under them (over the mattress) if you have a slippery mattress. We had to buy stretchy flannel sheets to fit over the bumpers, but we have them on three sides of her bed. I'm not sure if you would need special sheets if you only have them on one side. We love them! She was rolling off the bed several times a night when we first moved her to the floor, but now with the bumpers she only rolls over them and off her bed maybe once every 4-6 weeks. The bumpers create a little cozy nest and she loves her little bed! The other thing I love about the bumpers is that although they fulfill the safety standards for flame resistance after a day or two of airing out there was no noticeable odor. My son.... who recently made 4.... is like that.
He sleeps on a mattress on the floor.
We do NOT have any bed rails. Those are not needed... he is on the floor. And... rails do not help my son anyway. He is VERY active when he sleeps...and will even end up over the rail.
In his sleep.
My son, since 3 years old... has been sleeping on the floor on his mattress bed.
Its fine.
He needs no rails.

No need for the rail. The "fall" probably wouldn't wake him up, and if it did, he wouldn't be hurt, just annoyed. You could always fold up a blanket and place it next to the side of the bed so he has a softer "landing" :)
I had my 3 year old son's mattresss on the floor becuase he is a mover and he started getting spider/bug bites. Then I found a boxspring that is half the size of the other ones made with kids in mind so that worked with a bed frame very well. It isn't very high off the ground. Once he is asleep I tuck the side of his comforter between the mattress and box spring and he doesn't roll out. Good luck!
Also, "platform beds" will hold mattresses without the boxspring, but they are pricey.
