Bed Wetting - Fort Collins,CO

My daughter is now six years old and she still wets the bed just about every night except when she stays with a grandparent or when we go camping. We bought one of those bedwetting alarms and it was working great but then she stopped waking me up and started either turning it off when it went off or she put it underneath her and she ended up urinating on it which then broke it. It cost eighty dollars and I really don't want to buy another one. It is really strange that she only wets the bed at home. Does anyone have any suggestions? Help I am at my wits end I have been washing wet sheets every morning for years now. We have tried pullups, waking her up in the night, even bribery. Nothing has worked.

What can I do next?

I don't have any suggestions other than perhaps you may want to seek professional assistance. It could be physical, psychological. Good luck

R.,
I agree that it may be something physical because there are all sorts of things that children deal with, but have you approached it psychologically?
When you mentioned that she didn't wet at grandparents or camping that is a red flag that something is going on in those situations.
I am a hug fan of parenting with love and logic and my husband and I just took the class. I'd recommend checking out a book. Basically, it teaches responses to situations that are kids are in and also helps us teach them responsibility.
Evaluate how you react to her bed-wetting. You need to allow her to be part of the clean-up process. Sympathize with her, say "How sad, what do you think we should do about it?"
You will be surprised at what she may tell you. You can do this in a loving, non-frustrating way. As I said, it could be phsyical but it won't hurt to look at this approach as well.
Set some ground rules about what will happen when she wets the bed. Really try to discover why she isn't wetting during camping or grandparents, is it because she knows the outcome?
Our children are brilliant and I wish the best of luck. I know it's a common problem, but I believe you'll get through it.
good luck!

Since my four-year-old daughter is still having trouble staying dry in the daytime, I haven't even tackled bedwetting yet. We just rely on pull-ups for now. Eventually, though, we'll have to deal with it, and it's been on my mind. Here's a website that I found, geared to children, that answers a lot of the questions you have: http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/health_problems/bladder/enu...

Good luck!

Hi,

I am having the same problem as you. My daughter is almost 4 and has yet to have a dry night.

My brother had the same problem as a child, until after the age of 10 or so. My mom was telling me that the doctors told her that most people have a horomone that shuts down your body when you are in a deep sleep. Some children do not have that horomone so when they are in a deep sleep their bladder continues to work. Now, I have not asked our own doctor about this yet but plan to at our next appointment. My mom said they prescribed some sort of horomone steroid for my brother but it really affected him. He would have extreme mood swings when he was on it. I guess it was better to have him wet the bed then go though that. That was 20 some years ago, so I am sure there is SOMETHING we can do!

I know I don't have much advice, other then to maybe talk to your peditrican and see if they have any advice. I too have tried everything I could think of from not giving her anything to drink after dinner, bribing her with new, pretty panties, waking her up. Nothing has helped! Good luck! I will be checking back to this page to see if anyone has any good advice for you. I need it too!

Hi R.,

Maybe she is not drinking as much you are camping/at Grandma. Have you tried to stop the drink like 2hrs before bedtime? We were at Grandma's last Christmas my son didn't wet the pull-ups most of the time we were there (he was 4 yrs old) but we were alot more busy then. At home he drinks in his milk in a sipy cup almost up until bedtime and still asking for more. I also know an 8 yr old boy still wearing the night time pull-ups for bigger kids.

My sisters kids had the same problem when they were that age and alittle older. I began to realize that it could be some kind of Stress that could be going on in the home, and maybe needs to know that there is some kind of consquences for doing what she is doing. Also, another idea is Do not let her drink after a certain time of night. No water or drinks after 6 p.m.
If she wants a drink b 4 bed then give her just alittle bit and then have her go to bed. Not alot. I just know that when kids are under stress or the parents are, that is how they act out.

Hi R.
I too am strugling with a 10yr and a 5yr that still wet beds.
I understand your how frustraded this situation is, I also tried the alarm but that also didnt work,I still wake up at night to take these two kids and I'm tired.
I took my 5yr to the doc. and I told her about the problem, and she said that wetting bed is genetic sometimes, but she suggested to stop giving liquid after 7pm and waking her up twice at night.
Other wise there was the option for meds. but I heard those mess kids up. so right now I have the mat I purchase at the bedwetting store its pretty big and its cheap. its washable and it protects the bed. I too have to washe double sheets every day so
I wish you luck but most of all patience.

I was a chronic wed wetter until I was 14 years old, because I was a heavy sleeper and had a malformed urinary tract which healed itself with puberty. Unfortunately this probably is something your daughter just has to grow out of. Instead of wasting $80 on some fancy bedwetting alarms, go out and let her pick out her own old fashioned $6 alarm clock, the kind you have to wind with the annoying bells, they are cheap and work effectively because they are so loud that if she doesn't get up on her own you too can here it and take her to the bathroom. You can also try goodnights, but it worked for me to be woken up and taken to the bathroom every single night, which my grandfather did for me, and as long as that happened I remained dry. Good luck!

I have the same thing with my almost five year old daughter. My sister also had the same problem untill she was almost ten. My mom took her to the doctor about the problem. He said that she slept too hard and just did not wake to the feeling. The reason she may not do it away from home is just because she does not sleep as hard. I have just come to tearms with it and its a bedtime routine like brushing teeth to put on a pull-up befor she goes to bed. As long as she is fine during the day I don't think there is a real problem just get pull ups for night to save on washing sheets. My 11 year old son had the same problem if he would stay up too late. I just think they sleep to hard

R., this is so frustrating - I know! My son wets all over the bed nearly every night. It gets old changing sheets every stinkin' morning, doesn't it? The thing that keeps me from getting too upset is knowing that I did the same thing to my mother. I also wet the bed until I was about your daughter's age. My mother tried bribery and punishment and everything, but finally she took me to the doctor. It turned out that I had an immature bladder and I had to do some exercises to strengthen my muscles and try to stretch my undersized bladder. It really helped! I wonder if your daughter's problem could be something physical - at least partly. It's definitely worth checking with a doctor though.

Good luck and I hope you get things worked out!
