Belly Button Hernia - Turlock,CA

I had an umbilical hernia repaired in december of 2008. mine was pretty large so i had to have a regular surgery, not a laproscopy. I had a choice to be put under all the way or go with a general anesthesia. I went with the general (scared i wouldnt wake up if all the way under) and it was a breeze. they did have to use a patch and for a bit i could tell there was something there but that went away and i am having no problems. it's really nice to be able to pick things up again!! it's better to get it taken care of soon, as another poster said they can strangulate and then you're really in trouble. good luck!

I had the same thing happen after the birth of my first child. I had surgery to restich the abdominal muscles back together. It was a fairly short surgery, 45 minutes, and I was really only out of commission for 2 days.

I got one after my second child, but decided to wait until after #3
to get it fixed. He is only 1 month old so I haven't had it operated on yet.
For now I wear a back brace as a tummy girdle all day every day.
This holds it in so that it doesnt hurt

A hernia, is a hole in the abdominal wall muscles.
The "bump" that appears, is because internal organs, usually the intestines, are poking out of that hole...

You don't remove a hernia.... you have surgery to close up the hole.
It is routine surgery. Common.
Or you let it go... and not do anything. But then there is a chance that the hernia can "strangulate" which means that whatever is poking out of that hole... can become tangled/strangled in the hole and then cause gangrene etc. This is then an emergency situation.

There are different methods to close up the hole... depending on your situation.

You must see your Doctor and get advised.

My daughter had an "inguinal hernia." She got surgery for it and is real happy her "bump" went away. She is only 7. The surgery was fine and she was a real trooper about it all. Her surgery was laproscopic. Just a small incision. And 6 weeks of post-op reduction of activity and no heavy lifting.

The don't "remove them" they stitch them up. A hernia is simply a hole where there shouldn't be one. Something that your tummy was holding in place actually has wiggled it's way through and is protruding and causing you pain. I had one as well from my first daughter. She was a really big baby for me.....

If they get worse or larger, they will put a "screen" in there to patch the hole. I was told the screen pretty much guarantees it won't come back. Mine was so small (terribly painful though) that they wouldn't put a screen in for me. It was only two stitches...

I got a hernia around my C-Section scar after my last Section. They repaired it when my son was 5 months old. I'm about to deliver my baby next week and a surgeon will repair my repair after my C-Section...
