Bellybutton Question

Maybe I'm just getting worked up over nothing, but I have noticed that my 21 month old daughter's "innie" bellybutton has started poking out a little. It doesn't seem to bother her, and she acts normal, but it just seems strange to me. Has anyone else experienced this? She has her 24 mos checkup in late April but I don't know if I should talk to our doctor about it before then or if I am just having a spaz over a non-issue.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your input! My husband and I both had appointments with our nurse-practitioner this afternoon anyway, so we asked about the belly button while we were there. She said it's totally normal. I also showed her a spot about half an inch above the belly button that sticks out sometimes and is probably the real reason I was so worried in the first place (now that I stop to think about it). She said it looks like a small separation of the abdominus rectus muscles and will probably heal on its own, but that if it gets bigger we should show it to our family doctor. Needless to say, I feel much better now!

I don't know about children, but I know some times that can be indicative of a hernia in an adult. Get in to see the doctor now.

I don't know much about a belly button becoming an outie? I would either call the doctors office and leave a message to talk with the nurse and she will get back with you, or call the nurse on call at St. Johns which is ###-###-#### or 800-330-8305. They have a great computer system, They will want to know who your doctor is. I don't think you have to be in their system, if you do then do the first,(your doctor) there's no fee to talk to a nurse. Is there any redness, warmth, pain, anything else to mention? does her abdomen feel soft or firm? They might ask you some of these questions? They might tell you to see a doctor, I don't know. good luck.

It's not anything to get overly excited about unless your daughter is showing other symptoms like not eating, seeming to be in pain, not moving like she usually does. So feel free to wait until you see the doc.. The LS docs are great!

sometimes it's just when their tummies are very very full too.

Has she lost some of her baby weight? My younger son is very lean and his bellybutton can really stick out sometimes. It won't hurt to call your doctor, but I think it is probably normal.

My son's belly does this and we noticed when he ate a full meal it was bigger, and when he was hungery it was small.
I spoke with my doc about it and he said he has a small umbilical hernia. They could go in a surgically correct it, but he suggested there was really no need unless it became painful to him. My son will turn 9 in April. He has never had an issue with it. It has become our families quiet joke at meals. He tells us he is full, and we ask to see his belly button. If it is still in, he sits back down with a smile and if it is out he says...." See Mom I'm full!". It has never caused him pain or discomfort. Good luck. I imagine this is what your daughter has. The doctor said the surgery is very common and very short. So even if you go that route, I imagine all will turn out fine.

E.,
My son (now 5yrs old) had the same thing happen at about a year old. We noticed that it really protruded more right after he ate. We did ask the doctor about it. Turned out he had a hernia (spelling?) and the doctor said it was really very common and should go away on its own without treatment. It did go away on it's own. He never complained about it or acted like it bothered him at all.

My son is only 2 months, but his belly button is protruding a lot. It doesn't bother him either. We just took him to the pediatrician and he was not worried about it and said that by the time he is a year old it should correct itself. I am still worried about it though. Since your daughter is older though it wouldn't hurt to at least call the Dr. and see what they say.

My son's did the same thing. When we pushed on it we could hear fluid. I took him to the doctor and they said it was a hernia. My son was quite a bit younger when it happened to him, but the doctor said that it would heal on its own and in worse case scenario they would have to do surgery. It healed on its own and never caused him any discomfort.

I have a little girl now almost 11 months, when she was born her belly button was and "innie" and all of a sudden became an "outie", to the point of sticking our a little ofer 1/2 inch. I freeked out and took her to the dr. he informed me that it was hurniated and that in time it would go down, of course everyone was told me i needed to do somethime about it. In trusting the dr. it did eventualy go down and is almost completely back to an innie now. That could be the problem with your daughters. Maybe call the dr. and ask but April is not that far away. Please let me know how she is, I am so familiar with how you must feel.
