Belly Button Was Innie but Is Now Sticking Out - Should I Be Worried?

I had a foster child with a belly button hernia and his had popped out. The Dr.'s were not going to do surgery unless it was still there after the age of 5. They just told me to keep an eye on it and if there was any change to bring him in. They also said to be careful to not overfeed him. All of that just to let you know that if it is a hernia that you should not freak out. Just take her to the Dr. to make sure that you have covered all of your bases.

I have heard of babies having a herniated belly button, which can make them "pop," but I don't have any personal experience myself with it.

She probably developed an umbilical hernia. You should probably take her in to the pediatrician to have it checked to make sure no blood vessels or intestine (don't freak) are trapped inside the hernia. Until then, if it hasn't changed color (purple/blue) it is not an emergency. Sometimes, these require surgery but not always. Good luck...hope she feels better soon.

You might want to call her pediatrician and ask this question just to rule out any possible injury. (No need to make the trip in person if it can be answered over the phone). But, belly buttons do change on their own. They can go from innie to an outie as she grows. If she isn't in any pain and it hasn't changed color (indicating blood rushing to an injury site to do repairs), I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it for a few days to see if anything else happens. Good luck.
