Best Way to Introduce Milk

my daughter will be one in 2 weeks and I want to introduce whole milk soon. Currently she has a drinkable YoBaby yogurt (or regular YoBaby) every day and I give her cheese (and egg yolks)... she loves them all and there are no problems. I'm hoping that this is a good sign and regular milk will be an easy transition. I breastfeed 3x day but do not pump so I can't mix the two (she never took a bottle of BM anyway). I'm wondering if I should just put some milk in a sippy cup or slowly mix it in her drinkable yogurt a little at a time. I kinda want her to get used to the taste as-is without it being sweetened by the yogurt. As far as the breastfeeding, I will continue to do it as long as she wants it for a while and will wean her when I feel she is getting enough nutrition from regular foods.

What can I do next?

just give her milk in a sippy cup.. she will probably refuse at first.. but she will get used to it.

It takes a while.. my son never took formula so he went straight from breastfed to milk in a cup.. never took a bottle of milk..

my daughter had formula so we mixed 50-50 for a while.. then more milk less formula.. till all milk.

Pour it in a sippy cup and hand it to her at a time that she's often thirsty. You don't have to do anything weird. It just is what it is. "Here's milk". And no to 2%. Kids aren't on a diet. They NEED fat for health reasons, and the fat in milk is not the fat you need to be worried about anyway.

If she has not had any alergic problems, introduce as follows:

"Kid I would like to introduce you to MILK.....MILK I would like to introduce you to my kid....hope you two get along". I think 2 percent is better, but ask your doc.

Don't know why you gave her sweet yogart to begin with, but from now on, I suggest introducing her to baby veggies, squash, peas, etc., the sugared things are not necessary in baby food and you can easily make your own, even if don't have a fancy food processor.

I just gave our daughter a little bit in a sippy cup. I was not sure if she would drink it cold, so I was prepared to heat it if necessary,, She did not even flinch.

I was in the same situation as you with my son, whom I breastfed till around 15 months. He never could figure out how to work a bottle, so I just didn't pump and let him learn how to use a sippy cup with a juice/water mix. Although we offered it every day, he didn't really go for milk till after he turned two. (Even with chocolate in it.) It wasn't till we ordered him restaraunt chocolate milk that he actually downed the whiole cup instead of a sip or two. I guess it was the novelty of the situation. I just wanted to say that in case your little one doesn't take to milk, it's okay. Keep her hydrated with water and make sure she gets her calcium in other ways. Yogurt and cheese is the easiest- just add up the percentages on the label and make sure she gets it every day. Your pediatrician can help you figure out exactly how much she'll need.

LORD, don't do what I did! She hated milk but self weaned, so I bribed her once with sugar free chocolate milk... DOH! She is now 4 and will only drink chocolate milk....

Over the course of a about 2 weeks, I slowly replaced my daughters formula with milk. She never noticed the difference.

First of all, congratulations to you for breastfeeding at one year. :-) Btw, my 1st never took a pumped bottle either. The WHO (World Health Organization) recommends breastfeeding till 2 years of age since the kids still get nutrition, immunity and emotional benefits. So, go with it, Mama!

The milk thing is a bit of a marketing myth... started in the 1950's by the dairy lobby. Cow's milk isn't the end all be all of child nutrition - breastfeeding is. As long as your daughter is eating yogurt, cheese, sour cream, or veggies with calcium, then she's likely getting enough.

Adding milk is no different then adding any other food to her diet. Put it in a sippy (skip the valve if she's not used to a sippy) and offer it at meal times. If she drinks it great, if not don't worry. Remember it can take 12-14 times of trying a new food before many kids decide it's OK to consume. Whole milk is recommended by the AAP till age 2, and then 2% milk thereafter. The little ones need the extra fats, since fats support brain development.

Hope that helps! All my best,
-D.
