Sorry for another Disney question, but we've never been before and are planning our first trip. My daughter will be 4 in just a few weeks and is in love with being a princess and the Disney Princesses. I've been reading reviews about the BBB and it seems that it's a wonderful thing to do and the L. girls just love it. We had my daughters hair cut for the first time about a month ago at a salon and she loved it, so I know that she would enjoy the BBB. I've been watching some videos online of L. girls in the BBB and the hairstyles are horrendous and, my goodness, the glitter!!! I hate that they pull the hair so tightly on top of the head and then slather handfuls of wet glitter in their hair! Are there any other softer hairstyles and how long does it take for the glitter to come out? Also, is a tiara included or do you have to purchase/bring your own? I would bring my daughters Snow White dress from home because I am sure the mark up is crazy at the boutique. What are your opinions about the hairstyles? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I don’t think the dress, shoes and tiara come with it. But I can tell you from all our visits they use sooooooooo much glitter. I can't imagine how long it takes to wash that stuff off. And I have NEVER seen a girl come out of there with her hair not pulled back so tight.

IMO I would just get a princess dress for your daughter with the shoes and tiara and skip the BBB. I think it will cost you less in the long run. The dresses in the park cost the same as in the boutique. The BBB’s are inside the stores that carry the princess dresses and I think they pick out the dress before going in.

I actually sent my mother to BBB on her birthday a few years ago. She was a very good sport, but yes, all three hair styles they offer are horrendous, involve very tightly drawn hair and sometimes extensions. The tiara was included but are very cheap (and I had already gotten my mother a nicer one.) I don't know that my daughters will be going when they are even old enough. (They barely have hair at this stage.) I am hopeful that Disney does some upgrading on that particular attraction.

When I was a kid, my Mom got my Dad a haircut and a shave at the barber shop on Main Street USA, and we were all entertained by the Barber Shop Quartet. Better bang for the buck that was.

ETA - They offered three looks: The Princess, the Pop Diva and the Ballerina. All of them had the same basic look to your hair; pulled back tightly in a bun, slathered down with product. The Ballerina did not seem to use as much glitter. Princess came with tiara and some curly extensions. Pop Diva came with multi-colored extensions (a la Hannah Montana). They do makeup and nails as well. At the end, a fairy godmother dusts you with even more glitter. (Fairy Godmother "dusted" my Dad, too, as he was there with my Mom the whole time.) It was an absurd amount of glitter, but it was the experience I was paying for. The next day, after a shower, my mother was remarkably glitter-free. I think the whole deal cost about $60 and took an hour.

I guess I'm in the minority here! We took our (older) daughter to Disney for her 4th B day, and I thought the BBB was crazy expensive! My hubby said it was a once in a life time memory and we should do it. Well I am so glad I listened to him! Our daughter is now 8 and still talks about how much she loved it! It was crazy expensive, but the memories it made were so very worth it. She received a small (real) tiarra as well as a very special swarrovski (sp?) crystal Mickey barrette included with her hair styling. We also allowed her to pick the outfit she wanted which included the dress, shoes, wand and tiara. She got to keep all the make up, nail polish, jewels, etc that they used for her. The glitter came out in one bath, although we may have shampooed it twice. I also was not fond of the choices of hair styles, but our daughter liked it so we were ok with it. It really looked great once it was done. We also received a mini photo shoot with her package, and the the pics are so cute. I wish I could post a pic here! Over all the package cost us a crazy $300! We will never do it again (for her, but we will for our younger daughter!) It was a once in a life time thing. You could def. Bring the cost down by bringing your own dress, etc.(Just have them do the hair.) I'm, sure you could also ask them to go lightly w/the glitter! In total it took about 1.5 - 2 hours (including photos.) So you will want to plan accordingly and MAKE A RESERVATION! BEFORE you go to Disney! They book up very quickly! We went to the one in downtown Disney, because the other one was booked. We also did it the day we were going to dinner at the castle. Our daughter was so in love with everything Princess at that time so for us, it was worth it! I hope your daughter loves her trip as much as we did! Have a great time!

I would suggest that you check out the Barber Shop at the Magic Kingdom. Here's my response to a similar question from a while back:

On one of our visits, my husband saw the barber shop and decided that my son had to have his hair cut that day. While my son's hair was being cut, my daughter said that she wanted to get her hair cut at Disney World too. When I said that she had just had her hair cut, the barber offered to do a princess hair style with sparkles for her instead of a cut. It worked out perfect, because we already had a dress for her and we were going to a princess party at the park that evening.

The best part was that it cost us somewhere between $10 and $15. (If I remember correctly, the hair cut didn't cost any more than it did at the barber shop at home.) Plus it ended up being something that we did as a family and all enjoyed. The ladies working in the barber shop were super nice. And my daughter was thrilled.

I considered BBB for our daughter but decided not to just because we had other things we wanted to do with our Disney time. I was glad with our decision even more, though, when I saw the girls coming out with crazy hair and tons of glitter! If there's a more subtle look offered, I didn't see it. I can only imagine how that look holds up through water rides, heat and other activities at Disney.

I would skip the BBB and just do it yourself. They sell small tiaras that they use at BBB for about $10-12 . I know they have them outside of Akershus in Epcot. They have them at other stores at Disney too. They are really cute and comfortable . My daughter always hated the ones they sell at the Disney Stores at home . Have a magical day!

We went last year when my daughter was 3.5 and had zero interest in having anything done. After reading the input of others, I doubt, if we go again anytime soon, I would let her do it. But I have heard that the barber shop in Magic Kingdom will do something very simple and much more scaled down, and for a lot less money.

One of our "Disney With Kids" guidebooks that we bought for the trip mentioned the BBB and included one mom's story: they took their 5 year old daughter to get done up at BBB the first day of their week-long trip. The L. girl loved it so much, she would not allow any of it to be undone or washed out - no bath, no shampooing, etc. By the end of the week, her mom said that she looked like "Belle on crack." Might be something to think about, and maybe save until the end of the trip!

We were there in December and I was shocked by how many girls had their BBB updo's! There's also a "pirate boutique" for boys/men.

The ONLY thing included is the hair/makeup that you select. The accessories are all extra. The glitter was crazy and I am sure it takes multiple washings to get it out.

Couple of thoughts...
- How much time are you spending in Disney? If you are just there for a day you may not want to allocate that much time to the salon.
- You could ask the stylist to limit the glitter ahead of time and maybe bring a few rhinestones or sparkly clips from home instead.

If you have the time and she really wants to do it... buy a cheap tiara, bring your own clips and go for it! Yes, it's a crazy updo... but it's Disney so it's all about the theatrical and the extreme!
