Hi everyone- I took the pill, without a single problem or side effect (not even weight gain!) for ten years. When we decided to have children, I stopped. Since then, four years and two children later, I decided to try the pill again for a couple of years while we decide if want a third baby. I've tried estro-step and Yasmin and I've been miserable! I was just wondering if anyone else had something like this. I've had headaches, stomach aches, weight gain, and terrible, terrible mood swings. If I'm not on the pill, I was wondering if any other busy moms out there had any advice on a birth control that's out there that seems to work well for them. I asked my OB/GYN about the diaphram, and he strongly discouraged it. He's really pushing the IUD....I feel a bit nervous about this. Any thoughts, anyone? Thanks!!!!

What can I do next?

J.,

My advice would be to try the patch or the nuva-ring. They're hormone-based birth control, so you may end up with the same problems, but you may not. These are nice because if they're a problem, just take it off.

I plan to get an IUD when I deliver my baby, but only because I'm absolutely positive I don't want to get pregnant again. My husband isn't mentally ready to deal with no chance of ever having any more, so a tubal's out. This is the closest I can get. I'll tell you right up front, though. I would never go this route if I thought there was even a chance I'd want to do it again. In extremely rare cases, an IUD can cause perforation of the uterus. If you want to use that baby again, I wouldn't take ANY chances. How heartbroken would you be if you turned out to be that one in a million?

I found after having my children that my body is more sensitive to any hormone changes so I never even considered the pill. I went for the IUD and love it. It is so nice not to have to worry about anything. I used to have heavy periods and they are very light now which is another bonus. In fact I had one month with no period. I had mine inserted about 5 months after my son was born and it has been a year and a half since then and I have recommended it to a few people.

Hey J....Just a quick note to say that I have the "Mirena" IUD. It works like the pill, it had a low dose release of Progesterone(the hormone in the pill), which prevents ovulation(like the pill). It can work like a regular IUD if it ever got the chance, but that's unlikely. I am on my 4th year with this one. They have to be replaced every 5 years. The most noticeable side effect is that I don't get a period. Maybe once every four months I have some spotting, but I haven't bought a box of feminine products in years. I love it!!! Warmest regards...K. L

I personally have had the best luck with the Depo shot. Once every 3 months and forget about it. After a few shots, I stopped having my period completely. Swim whenever you want, do whatever, whenever!!! They do want you to go off it for a while every few years because of the possibility of osteoperosis when you're older. I tried going back on the pill for a while and was miserable. I love no PMS!

I felt great on the pill for ten years before my daughter. Restarted after a year of being off and samething... miserable! I tried Yasmin too and it was the worst. I am now on Apri and feel more normal than I had in awhile. At first it made me a little nervous feeling (a side affect read the box!!!) but now it's pretty good. Hope this helps!!!
