I have had the Mirena for almost a year now and I love it. There's no pill to remember to take and virtually no monthly period. I spot for a few days every 4 months or so and that's it! It's wonderful!
Hi Moms! Has has anyone had the Mirena inserted? I was wondering if anyone likes it or doesn't like it? I'm over 35 and now that I'm not breastfeeding I need to find something that works for me. I'm allegic to spermicides so that cuts all of those options. I don't want anything permanent, and I understand that the pill after 35 isn't good for you. I did some reseach on the Nuva Ring and it sounds like it slips out/down. Any suggestions?
Thanks everyone for all the information! I will see my doctor soon, but after reading everyone's responds, I think I will just talk to him about it and maybe he has a better idea than the Mirena. I would be one of those odd ones that something wouldn't go right. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks everyone!!

HI K.,
I just wanted you to know that I have had Mirena for 4 1/2 years now. I had no cramping when it was put in and only light bleeding for about three weeks but I was still having that from having my daughter anyway. I absolutlely love it. I have to have it taken out in November and I am having another put in the same day. I have not had a period since December 2004. Like I said I absolutley love it. Everyone is different I know someone who had it and had it fall out but she had a new one put in and has had no problems with it. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Completely happy w/ my Mirena. Like others have said, there was some cramping at first, but that's the only bad side effect I have had. Occasionally, my husband can feel it, but it doesn't spoil the mood or anything.
One of the good side effects is that I haven't had a period since Sept. '07! I don't miss them either!

I recently had Mirena put in around a month ago. So far, so good. I have been spotting for about a month, but my ob said that was normal. It's basically like a very light period. It didn't hurt at all when it was inserted, and I had just very light cramping that evening. I like the idea that I don't have to think about anything. I just had my second child 4 months ago, but my husband and I didn't want to do anything permanent.
I went back on the pill t 38 for an ovarian cyst. My doctor checked my cholesterol and trigycerides and they were fine so she said it is ok. she will monitor my blood work yearly.
I had a friend with an IUD. She was very happy until it punctured her uterus, floated out into her abdominal cavity and required surgery. Rare yes but it still creeps me out.
Merina... had it in for 2 years and loved it... The only bad thing at that point was the cramping for 3 months when they first put it in. I had it checked, rechecked, etc etc... it just HURT! So that was the only bad thing, that was until I got married and had sex. AWFUL with sex. Hurts soo bad.... I eventually had it taken out about 4 months after we got married and it was sooo much better!!! OMG!!! I HATE it now, because of what it did to my sex life! I use the nuva ring and LOVE it. I take it out with sex (dr recommended and approved) and it is PERFECT. Sometimes, it slips a little and I just push it back up there! I vote for nuva ring!!! Plus, my friend had marina and it was stuck in her uterus and she had to have surgery to get it out! Ouch... and costly!
I had mirena for a whole year and hated it!! It made me crazy to the point I didn't want to take care of my daughter and I was bitting everyone's heads off over nothing. I had no periods after it was inserted so that was sorta nice. But I gained almost all of my weight back to the point of what I weighed at nine months. I was tired all the time and had no interest in doing anything. I literally felt like I was loosing my mind. It can also make you very paranoid. If your prone to cysts it can make them worse. Many times it also kills your sex life too.
On the flip side my best friend had it too and she would have her periods only they would last for like 2-3 weeks straight. She would get dizzy and nearly pass out. Her cramps were worse than ever. She is bipolar and it made it ten times worse.
Over all everyone I've met that has had it hates it. But some women do fine with it and love it. But if you are sensitive to hormone changes in yourself and others then I don't recommend it.
Hi K.. To add on about Mirena, I also have one and have for almost a year. I didn't have any pain with insertion and only a little discomfort for the evening after. It's pretty nice, not too many side effects, but my period is much less regular than it used to be on the pill. I still have spotting and I have more cramps before my period than I used to. But, overall, it's great not to have to worry about BC all the time.
I tried the mirena and it didn't work for me. Unfortunately, I was one of the few who bled uncontrollably when it was inserted. I don't know why, if it was put in wrong or what, but it hurt and I hemmoraged in the office until I made them take it out. I've been told by my new gyno, that that rarely happens, but I am hesitant to do it again. My sister in law has it and loves it. So don't go by my experience alone. I, however, get the depo shot and love it. It lasts for 12 weeks and is something like 99.6% effective. I have not noticed any side effects at all, and I have not had a period since last Feb. when I had my first shot. I also have had no breakthrough or spotting. Some do, but I don't think it's a problem. If you want long term (5-10 yrs) protection I would try the Mirerana, but if you are unsure, for the time being you could try the shot. You don't have to have one after the first. It will just wear off in 12 weeks. Good luck
I have had the Mirena for about 8 mos now and am pleased. Some people say they had lots of cramping when it was inserted, but I did not experience that. I did spot for about 3 months, though. That was very annoying, but it ended & I now have regular periods (minus the horrible cramps that I get when I'm not on birth control).
I really like it over other methods (i.e. pill, ring, shot, etc.) because you don't have to think about it. With two little ones, I don't have time to remember something else to do!
I've head it's great, but I am one of the 1/1000 (or whatever the number is) who had it puncture the uterus, float out into my abdominal cavity and i had to get surgery. I certainly won't do it again. I've also heard really great things about the Nuva Ring. My sister just loves it.

I got the Mirena a little over two months ago and so far so good. No problem with insertion or cramping. After the first week, I have had a little daily spotting but it doesn't bug me. I am 40 and did have problems with the pill after the birth of my second child four years ago. Good luck with your decision.
I also have the Mirena IUD. I like everything about it as well. It is so nice not to have to worry about any sort of schedule. My husband can notice the string occassionaly, but it doesn't seem to bother him. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking into long term birth control.
I had mine put in shortly after my husband and I had our twins which brought us to 3 kids. It'll be 1 yr this month and I still love it!
I've had the Mirena for 2 1/2 years. It was rough at first for me because I spotted for several weeks after it was inserted. I was having issues with my periods and didn't want to do bc pills. After the spotting stopped so did my problem periods. Its been such a relief after years of terrible cycles.
I used the Nuva ring for 6 months and had terrible migranes once a month around my period. Found out later that was a side effect if you are prone to migraines. I loved the Nuva ring but did have it slip out a couple of times during intercourse and once found it (or I should say my toddler found it) on the floor next to the bed. That was kind of traumatic for me but he didn't know what he was picking up.
I am going to try the Mirena IUD after our second baby.
I like my mirena. I have had mine since February, so about 5 months. I had mine put in 8 weeks after giving birth to my third child. I did natural childbirth with no drugs, and I compare the insertion to the feeling of a long intense contraction. It hurt! After the insertion I bled very heavily and bright red for 3 weeks non stop and then the bleeding started getting lighter and brown in color and then stopped. Now I have been having only very very light periods on schedule every month since. I also cramped for 2 days after insertion.
I have experienced no other side effects, and my sex life has not been affected. My husband can't feel it, and my sex drive is the same it has always been. No hormonal imbalances.
Also, I am breastfeeding.
(I also did have to get antibiotics after having it put in because I got PID, but only because I have a history of PID... the PID made me really sick and in pain but within 24 hrs of the antibiotics it went away)
I've had mine for 2 1/2 years now and I already know I'll get another one. No periods, no problems, waaaaay cheaper than anything else. That's why insurance companies will pay for it :)
Everyone is different. I suggest you give it a try and see what happens.
Good luck!
Hi! I had Mirena put in early September - I had my first child (son) in July and I am 30...soon to be 31. I have had no problems with it at all...really like it actually. No weight gain, no cramping and somewhat normal periods...some people have periods with it and others do not. I did have some painful cramping after it was insterted, but only for a couple of days and then it went away. Good luck to you on your birth control search!
I LOVE mine! It has been wonderful, no side effects.
Hello K.,
I do have the Mirena and I like it. This is my second IUD, with the first one being 10 years ago. I've had the current one in about three years and haven't had any problems. I would recommend it to anyone looking for temporary BC. The thing I love about it is my periods are little to none! Once in a great while, I'll actually have one, but it lasts only two days.
It's great!! If you have anymore questions, you can send me a PM. ls
I absolutely LOVE IT!!!! I do have to say the first 6 months with it in was an adjustment because of the spotting, but other than that. It's so nice, I really don't even have to think about it.
I used the Nuva Ring for almost 4 years with no problems. I liked it becaue I've had trouble with the Pills making me sick and I had tried the once monthly injectable and it made me gain 20 pounds and the Patch was alright but by the end of the week its pretty yucky looking. We are expecting our fourth boy but that's only because of operator error...you have to remember to use it for it to work :) Good luck!
I've been using Mirena for 3 years and it's been great. I don't think about it AT ALL. I go to the OB/GYN just once a year and he checks it and that's all. It hurt to put in and maybe a little uncomfortable that day. My periods are now nonexistent. Maybe a little spotting for a day. I don't even keep track of when it occurs.
I also used the Nuva Ring before Mirena. It was fine but even having to think about it once a month (to put it a new one) was too much thought for me. Occasionally it was uncomfortable and I'd have to re-insert it. I guess I never came up with a system to keep track of the weeks - put it in for 21 days, take it out for 7, etc. The pill was easier. So with Mirena I don't have to think about a thing. We're done having kids. I guess I'll get another Mirena after it's been 5 years. My husband won't have a vasectomy. I'm 40.
I use the Nuvo ring and love. I have never had any problems with slipping even during sex. My husband rarly notices it during sex.
I also have a friend with the Mirena and she likes it. She said that her periods are less. She did have some cramping as spotting when it was first put in. Her only other complaint is that sometimes she has trouble finding the string when she is doing her monthly check.
Good luck with what ever decision you make
