My little boy is turning 2 in February and I'm looking for an alternative to a typical birthday cake. Have any of you made anything different for your toddler's birthday? I'd love any suggestions that you have!

What can I do next?

I made rice crispy treats. I colored the marshmellows, grease a Lightning McQueen cake pan really well and pressed the mix in. Once it was set, I flipped it out and decorated it with frosting. It was a hit with the kids. I'd do it again. In fact I have a recipe for a ginger bread house made out of rice crispy treats. You could also make them in a normal cake pan and decorate it just like a cake.

I make my kids a cake that is themed like thier party. For example my son turned 2 in december and we had a "Cars" (the movie) birthday so I found a McQueen cake pan and he had a cars cake. So far we've done Strawberry Shortcake, McQueen, Pooh, and a Princess Castle cake ( i bought that one).
The kids think they are fun, and I enjoy making them too. If you want pictures message me! Good Luck! ( I also like the cupcake ideas too)

For my cousin didn't have a cake for her little boys birthday. He was really into trucks so she bought a medium sized dump truck and filled the back with a pudding mixture. She layered chocolate pudding, cool whip, and oreos. She made the last layer a thick layer of oreos so it looked like the dump truck was full of dirt! It was really cute! Everyone just took a scoop of the pudding, and she also had some cupcakes that were the chocolate and cheesecake swirl kind for the older adults that wanted something other than pudding! I thought that it was a great idea!

I did a cupcake cake for my daughter. They have them at Walmart or you can make them yourself. They are sooo cute and you can decorate them individually or have them all decorated to create a picture.

since he's a boy he might like the worms in dirt cupcakes.
i think you can find something like that online
recipes.com or allrecipes.com
the 'dirt' is crumbled up oreos i think and then you use gummy worms coming out the top.. not sure what the 'cake' part is made of,, if just cake or something else..

for my daughter's 1st birthday she wasn't on solid foods yet since she was 3 months premature she was behind 3 months in that. so we did jell-o cups and whipped cream. she was a big red mess!! but funny looking..lol
for her 2nd birthday a friend made a castle cake using pink cones for the towers.
this 3rd birthday she had a ice cream cake!! awesome.. because what isn't eaten, you can freeze in an air tight container and nibble on later. as with cake cake leftovers dry up quickly.

my son will probably have an ice cream cake for his 4th birthday next week.. thanks for reminding me..lol lol
good luck.

I say you can pretty much do whatever you want for a treat! Pudding, ice cream, rice krispie treats! I have gotten a candle into just about everything...even a frosted cookie!! Have fun planning it, I love that part the most!

Any cupcakes are great for the younger kids! He might be able to help you pick out the flavor of cake and the frosting he likes! You can also make these ahead of time and freeze them in an airtight container and defrost the night before the party and frost them then. I let my 3 and 5 year olds put sprinkles on two cakes I made for a holiday party, I just put the cakes in a fairly big box and put the box on the floor and they stood over them and had a sprinkling-good time! (And it wasn't messy! :) )

Hi A.,
We bake sugar cookies & let the kids frost & decorate. He might be a little young for that but most kids like to get "dirty". Have fun!

Pies are good...fruit pies or pudding pies. Rice Krispie treats are fun for kids too and less messy on your floors.

I decorate cakes with all kinds of themes, a Nemo cake and Dora Beach Party were fun ones to do. Fancy decorating pans are easy to do and there are tons of books out there to help you learn to decorate them with the fancy icing tips.

I have done all the suggested ideas for parties, and they all have went over well!

I also did a gigantic cookie ordered from a local bakery or made yourself. You can write Happy Birthday on it, even put candles in it, and serve with icecream and chocolate syrup!

Have Fun!!!

Have you maybe thought about a strawberry jello cake ? It is white cake mix, that you cook all the way then you mix up a package of jello and when the cake is cooled you poke random holes in it and pour the jello on top of that.. then you spread cool whip over the top and if youd like you can decorate with strawberries or whatever.. its really good. Maybe even do cupcake .....
