I am having a backyard Bar-b-q for my son's upcoming 4th birthday. There will be friends his age, family, and other adults. We will all be eating outside and I want to play music outside that everyone will enjoy, not just either the kids or adults. Is this possible? lol The only thing I can think of is maybe the Beach Boys? Thanks for your suggestions.

So What Happened?

The party was GREAT! Other than the fact that is was REALLY hot! The music was great. I melded everyone's suggestions into a couple of mixed CD's. The kids and adults seemed to like everything and I even had a couple of requests for copies of the CDs. Thanks for all of the advice and God Bless!

My kids love all the grown up music I listen to, soft rock and easy listening. But they really get into my husbands music and dance all out. He likes classic hard rock. My youngest heard some classical and got all excited and said he wants to learn piano (he's only five!). So I think kids definitely like grown up music, no need to stick to the kiddie songs.

My kids love reggae, my fave is the bob marley legends cd (kind of the most generic raggae music that most people know). And the luau and beach boys music will be great too.

Anything from the 50's seems to go over well enough for me. The kids love it, because quite often the songs are silly, and most of the adults are fine with it because they heard it from their parents. Maybe I'm telling my age. 80's music seems to make the adult really happy, and I don't have to worry about content, but mostly the kid's find it boring.
You've cut out quite the task for yourself. Good Luck!

If you just want a CD to pop in and leave on, you can't go wrong with Jack Johnson. His music is easy listening, yet fun and he always has some catchy tunes everyone loves. My boys (2 1/2, 4 and 13) like him too. He made one CD for the Curious George movie with kids songs. However, if you want to have something for everyone, I would get any one of his regular CD's. We have lots of bbq's and have our friends, their kids, and my oldest son's friends over swimming--all seem to be happy with our choice.

Hey T.,

If you still have some time why not make a CD or use an eyepod to just mix things up a bit. A little of this, a little of that.... throw some Disney songs in there, and then some of the music you like, etc. etc.

This way your adult guests are still humble and the kids are too..

We love Dan Zanes! It's great music (supported by Playhouse Disney) and not annoying for adults. Great for kids to dance to as well!!

My son is almost 4 and he loves to dance around to music by Justin Roberts. It is not like most corny kids songs, my husband and I even sing along and get the tunes stuck in our heads. It is the best kids music I have heard. We have "Yellow Bus" and "Way Out". It you search for them on Amazon.com you can listen to samples to see it you like. Hope this helps!

Play a mix....if you love the Lord, get some easy listening Christian music in there. Instrumental (without words) is nice.

It is your sons birthday... it's ok to let the kids have reign of the day with kid friendly music. I'm sure the adults coming are not planning on everything being just how they would like it. They ought to be coming knowing that it's a kids party and things are gonna be done to make the kids happiness a priority. Adults can deal with a dislike of the music, but if the kids are bored and don't like it... you're gonna have some grumpy kiddos. That being said, I like the Backyardigans music as kind of a happy medium. The words are for the kids, but not silly or dumbed down that the adults are irritated by it but I think the cool part is that each song takes on a different genre of music. You'll get a nice mix of music that the adults can enjoy... while the lyrics are fun for the kids.

Upbeat Big Band/Swing music suits most folks. Email me and I can make suggestions, both from the 30's and 40's (Glenn Miller for example), and modern Big Bands (like Brian Setzer).

Jack Johnson, he did the music in the movie Curious George. It's kinda mellow and some upbeat songs. The adults and kids in our family love Jack Johnson. Happy birthday party!
