Hello, I am 35 and expecting my second son in December. My firstborn is now 9 years old, so it has been a long time since I was in the midst of baby things, and there is so much that is new and different. I was wondering about bottles. I was hoping some of you who have breastfed and used bottles for expressed breast milk or to supplement with formula would share with me your recent experiences with the different brands of bottles out now. I am looking for one that is most like nursing. Thank you for your help...

What can I do next?

My son has done well with the Medela bottles. Since I'm only an occasional pumper, I like that he's into those bottles because it makes it simple to just pump, store and feed with the same container. They also have a glass option if you're considering that. I do have some Adiri bottles, and I like the feel of them, but they only come in the large size and I haven't had an application for them yet.
With my daughter, I had Playtex Drop-Ins and Vent-Aire bottles with the wide nipples. She did prefer the nipple on the Drop-In, I think because it was softer and more pliable like the real thing. Both of those options are at least now BPA free.

I bought the Born Free bottles for my baby this time around and like them. He didn't mind going from breast to bottle. Before that I used Avent. They are similar.

I have been trying to figure out what bottle is best for breastfed baby too. After searching the internet and in stores I don't think any bottle is close to breastfeeding. The Playtex nursers do have the softest nipple so I have decided to try that one first with my 2 month old within the next month. My bottle experiences with my older two children I formula fed and pumped. The best one back then was the original Gerber the never leaked. I also tried the Avent and Paytex Vent Aire that always leaked.

i love the dr browns bottle - the sucking action is similar to the breast - so it's a great go between.

I did the breastflow with my first, and looked for them again this time (even though I had my issues with them). The store I went to didn't have them, and I got the tommee tippee. I love them, and my daughter has had no problem going between it and the breast. They also have a sensitive versus.

I liked avent with my first so I went out and bought a lot for my 2nd.. and she could not use them nipple flow too fast.. so don't go and buy a lot.. until u know the baby likes them.. with my second my baby liked gerber and I loved the glass bottles. Felt like they cleaned well.

I LOVE the "MAM" brand bottles. It is BPA free, has a natural nipple and is cute and comes in 3-packs.
Amazon has it.
My son, who was breastfed, loved these bottles too. And it does not accumulates air bubbles in it, as the baby drinks.
It is commonly used in Europe but not commonly found in stores here.
GREAT bottle.

My situation was almost identifical to yours (35 w/older child and now a newborn). Yes, it is all very different this time around!!

Personally, I have had success with Playtex Nursers. My daughter prefers the brown laytex nipples (for bottle and paci), but almost all now are the silicone (clear). They are firmer, so the laytex is more flesh-like.

I'd advise not buying much until you know for sure. Maybe you can borrow a sampling. My son did not transition well from breast to bottle and we had a hard time finding one he would take. I spent a small fortunet figuring out what he like and we settled on the Playtex nurser. It was very stressful. I tired Playtex first w/my daughter and she just took it. Now that she is 9 months, she will take anything (she is still breast and bottlefed).

Good luck with it all!!

I also loved the MAM bottles, but would recommend buying one of each of several bottles, to see what your son prefers before you stock up on a bunch of them. My son was picky, and we tried several different ones before settling on the MAM.
Good luck!

We have been using Nuk with our grandson. He did not nurse well. He kept his tongue at the top of his mouth & had to learn NOT to do that. But nursing didn't work out as well as my daughter had hoped. So after trying a couple of different brands the Nuk seemed to work best and he had FAR less colic than he was experiencing.

Congratulations on the pending arrival.

My son who is now 6 months old only loves the bottles called Soothie. You buy them online I don't think stores sell them. Although my step dad was the one who bought them for me and he said he got them at Target. My hubby and I couldn't find them there and ended up buying them online. They are just like a breast and reduce considerably bubbles and things that cause hiccup heart burn and it even helps prevent colic. I am prego with my second one and I plan on using the same bottles. Good luck!! :)

Here's a good site with information about nipples that are more breast-like and are less likely to cause nipple confusion. http://www.lowmilksupply.org/nipples.shtml

I found the Breast Flow bottle to be the most breast-like of the ones I tried. My situation was a little different perhaps than yours will be. I was trying to get my baby off the bottle (born prematurely) and onto the breast. This bottle was what finally did it for us.

I'm in the same boat as you: 35, due in November with our older child being school-age! I also asked a very similar question here not too long ago. I ended up getting a Playtex Nurser with the latex nipples (since everyone says they are more like the breast). I liked that there wasn't much to clean and even read you can use your breastmilk bag in place of the bag insert. My first child wouldn't take a bottle and wouldn't drink formula until he was much older (and I had to try lots of different brands!) So, I plan to give a bottle of breastmilk and/or formula here and there to prevent that early on. Of course, it could just be my first baby was super stubborn! I only have one bottle with a few nipples (since you don't have to wash the "bottle" part) so we can give it a try before buying more. I looked into the Tommee Tippee and another one that simulates nursing with a really complex nipple...but they didn't have great reviews. Playtex seems to be a tried and true type of brand. Good luck to you!

I am currently breastfeeding and bottle feeding (daycare). We use the Playtex Nursers with the drop-ins which are wonderful and also the Dr. Brown's bottles. We have had no problems with her at all in any confusing manner. Good luck and congratulations.

I think you are going to have to go to the store and take a look at all the different nipples to see which ones are most similar to your breasts. There are so many different kinds, shapes and brands. I exclusively breast fed but for those times when we were out and about I used playtex drop-ins. I'm am not comfortable nursing in public and these were the most like my own breast.

Playtex Drop-Ins. I don't know if you have experience with these... but they are GREAT. i am a mom of a 3-mo-old, my first, and my mom happened to buy Drop Ins for me when I asked her to buy bottles while in the hospital (he was a preemie and we weren't totally ready!). they are bottles with different flow nipples that you can buy almost anywhere, and you just buy plastic "drop-ins" (i tastelessly call them "bottle condoms") that you fill with the formula and water and then discard the drop-in when you're done. you can pre-measure a bottle this way if you're going out, and they are easy to clean - no bottle cleaners necessary. and i as i said. they sell the drop-ins, bottles and nipples nearly everywhere.
