Bottles...how Long Are They Good For??

Hello,

We had our daughter almost 6 years ago and she was bottle fed. We are now about to adopt a second and are not sure if the bottles we used for our first are still good! How long are bottles good for? We have the Playtex Ventaire wide. They have a nipple of course and a flexible vent on the bottom of the bottle too. So are the nipples and flexible vent ok or do they need to be replaced? Also what about BPA free...I have no idea if they are BPA free??

If we have to buy more are there any brands you would recommend or try to stay away from?

Thanks for your help!!

What can I do next?

they're probably not BPA free, and after that many years, the BPA is probably leaching out.
i agree with kym, you can get good quality glass bottles that have no BPA dangers and can be thoroughly cleaned, and get some new plastic ones for occasions where the glass isn't appropriate.

Glass with cozies is what we used to keep any chemical leeching out. We only used plastic for juice and water. We never broke a bottle, even on a tiled kitchen floor and outside concrete!

I used glass with my kids and reused them for each child. Would use them again if needed - but passed most on to others to use.

They used plastic w/my grand - probably not a good idea now knowing about BPA...

There is a high chance they're not BPA free, you can almost bet on it, so you'll need new ones. Even on the off chance they are BPA free you'll still need new ones because it breaks down especially the nipples, there is no chance I'd use the nipples.

Congratulations! Quite Lovely for you all

When I clicked on your question, I thought maybe you were talking about bottles, like wine bottles, in which case my answer would be "about one night around here!" ;)

BUT, you weren't! I would not reuse a bottle that is 6 years old. Plastics break down over time and it's not worth the small cost of new bottles to take a risk. I tried the fancy bottles like the Avent for my first child. Quickly found out she could care less if it was an Avent or a cheap old Gerber. I was and still am a stickler for sanitation, and found that only having a few Avents on hand was not going to work for me. I like to use a bottle, rinse it, and put into dishwasher. And I was not about to run my dishwasher 2x a day or buy a ton of Avents. Especially working FT outside the house! So I bought about 18 of the Gerbers and washed/rotated them. Came in really handy to make up multiple bottles ahead of time too. I also didn't feel so bad about buying enough of the proper flow nipples to match the bottles. And when we went places over night that didn't have kitchen facilities, I again didn't have to worry about having proper sanitation for our bottles.

Congratulations and best of luck to you!!

I HATE browns bottles. I don't care how many times I washed them they still smelled like sour formula. I used the tool to clean the tube and even sat them in water with baking soda in it. They stank. I threw them all away.

My first was born in 2006 (about when yours was, yes?). When I was pregnant with my second 3 years later, I found that all the 2006 bottles had BPA. I tossed them all and bought new. Wasn't worth the risk knowing what we do not about BPA.

It's actually not hard to tell if they have BPA. If they are a crystal clear plastic, they probably have BPA. All the new non-BPA bottles are a little bit opaque.

I think that is too long and if for some reason you use the bottles you would have to replace the nipples. Please this new one may not take to the same kind so I would not get too many to begin with anyways and see what this baby likes. And depending on how old the baby is you might now need many either. If it's a new born go buy a 6 pack of 4 oz bottles till you know if it will take them. Good luck and congrats!
