For the past week or so I have noticed that my breasts are tender. I thought it was just PMS stuff, I'm due to start my period next week. Well last night I noticed that my left breast if really tender. This morining I was leaking what looked like breast milk and it is still very tender. I did breast feed my son, but he stoped nursing and I stopped pumping more than 9 months ago and I have not produced any milk for a while now. Have any of you experienced this and maybe know what it is?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok so I went back and looked at the calendar and I should start my period today. So I freaked out an bought a pregnancy test and it was negative. I called the doctor's office and my doctor is out of the office until next week. The nurse said to just watch it and come in next week if it has not gone away. I wish my doc was there today so I could go get this checked out.

I have read that if you have any discharge from the breast it's best if a physician will examine you. Good luck.

Well...if you are still able to have children, you could very well be pregnant. A friend of mine had the same thing when she was expecting her 2nd child and her 1st was over 2! Don't know if this would be good news or bad, but...either way it is something to consider. Keep us all posted!!

Is there a "let down" sensation as if to nurse with this pain? There may be a milk duct that has become clogged or infected. Don't play around. I say this not lightly as I had an issue with a sensitive breast and had a lumpectomy 10 years back -- not trying to scare you just trying to warn you. It is best to err on the side of caution.

I haven't experienced this (I nursed my son until he self-weaned at 2 and I was 5 months pregnant, and now I'm nursing my daughter, so I haven't had much of a lapse in nursing!) but I have friends and my sister who have been able to lactate years after having and breastfeeding their last baby. It's not abnormal.

It wouldn't hurt to go to the doctor just in case, though. Just to rule out anything. Having the tenderness for no reason would be enough reason to go. Of course, you could be pregnant again! GL!

I have experienced this pain before, and it only mean that you still have some milk in your breast.your baby is only nine months.i still had milk in my breast after my kids were 2 years old.i went to the doctor about 4 months ago because i felt a mass in my breast and it really hurt.i had an ultra sound done and it was benign.the tech told me that i didnt have to worry about it being cancer because cancer doesnt hurt.so if you feel like you need to see the doctor please do so.i really think that it is just milk glands.b fulcher

I can't say for certain what your specific thing is, but I can say that I continued to have breast milk, in increasingly smaller quantities, for about four years after I weaned my daughter. On the plus side, for whatever reason related or not, my periods were also lighter and less painful during that time.

There are many many things that can cause breast tenderness, but my first call would be to the doctor to rule out infection or cyst.

Are you pregnant? I would call the doctor's office for peace of mind. Don't take forgranted that you are young.

I had this happen to me and when I went to the doctor they said it was hormones. Cut out all caffene and even chocolate and drink lots of water. If any redness or fever or funny discharge happens go to the doctor right away.

Oops, hit respond before I saw that you had already taken a pregnancy test. I would definitely have it checked by your OB or even your regular doctor since your OB is out of town. Good Luck!

Please go to the doctor. It's probably nothing, but if it is something serious, you want to know right away.

P.,
I started lactating (just a tiny bit) a year after I stopped breast feeding. In my case, believe it or not, it was caused by buying new bras. I had a bra fitting and was wearing more supportive bras and this confused my breasts and they started lactating. It stopped after 2 weeks.

My primary care doctor did a blood test to rule out a benign tumor in a gland in my head, which is a common cause of lactating for no reason (as I understand if you have that it can often be shrunk with medication - surgery is a last resort). When I didn't have that she referred me to a breast specialist because there is a rare breast cancer that can cause leakage I guess. I had a mammogram. The breast specialist was the one who determined it was caused by the bras.

Don't worry, I'm sure your issue is no big deal like mine but I would head to the doctor to have some other stuff ruled out!

Hello P.
I would look up Inflammatory Breast Cancer to see if any other symptoms apply as it is aggressive and many dr.s don't even know of it yet.
Or poss. you are pregnant, but just to be sure and aware of this anyway. Hope all is well soon, E.

I had a breast infection after my daughter was born. It is very painful and can make you pretty sick. I would call a dr. soon just to make sure. It's treatable by antibiotics, so no big deal there, but if that is what it is, it will probably continue to get worse.

It basically is just a milk duct that gets infected for whatever reason. No cause for worries, but can hurt. Mine came on REALLY fast, got swollen, really red and feverish and super painful like in a matter of a couple of hours. May be something different here, but since that's the only one I ever had, I am not sure if they can come on in different ways. My daughter was only a day or two old at the time.

Good luck!

I would imagine it is a clogged milk duct...BUT you need to get a mammogram. You have stopped breast feeding for long enough (needs to be 3 months after breast feeding). DO NOT let a doctor tell you that you are too young. I am 2 1/2 years out of my breast cancer diagnosis. I was diagnosed at 33. I didn't experience any pain or discharge, but I have spoke to women at MD Anderson who did. PLEASE do this for yourself and your family. Better to be safe than sorry!!!!

I think you should see a physician to rule out anything serious. I'm sure it is OK, but if your OB/GYN is out of town, I would go see someone else. Don't let them put you off. Good luck!

My aunt started lactating for no reason, and it turned out to be a tumor on her pituitary gland, like Kelly refers to. She got it removed easily (for the drs, of course surgery is never fun), and she's fine now. It wasn't cancer.

Of course, maybe you are pregnant. I had the same signs before I found out I was pregnant the first time. I thought I was having PMS, but my dang period just wouldn't start! :)

Either way, it's worth a trip to the dr.

I have an inverted nipple on my left breast, and from about a year after my first boy and four years later, I leaked. Mom said it was because I didn't breastfeed (ha!). But the doctor told me I had something going on because of scar tissues under the nipple. There is a procedure they can do that could be justified by insurance if there is more than a hygeine issue going on. Otherwise, check the net and they have some products and self care things you can do. Just search under leaking or inverted nipples. May also just be a hormone thing and your doctor should be able to help you.

hello there,

what you are having is most likely a hormonal inbalance. Beleive it or not even men can have a secreation of the breast glands. Being of the breast area you definately need to go see your docter, better safe than sorry.
