Breast Pain - Williston,ND

I don't want to be graphic but I don't know how else to phrase this. I am not pregnant but a few times a week I get a throbbing pain in both my breasts and when I put pressure on my nipple there is discharge. Its clear and just a tiny little bit but I don't know if this is normal since I have never had this before. I have had two children and my youngest is 3 so an issue with nursing shouldn't be there. Should I be concerned or is this just a normal part of my cycle?

What can I do next?

its true about the caffeine, as others have said. As for leaking/ discharge, if you breastfed, it may be milk or colostrum. I weaned my middle daughter in 1995, and still had some milk/ clear fluid I'd guess was colostrum up until I had this daughter last march (im bf now too) I was pregnant a couple times in between, but still I had milk for over 15 years with no baby feeding. My breasts have always been tender, since I started developing them.

Were you nursing before with either of your children?

Get your prolactin, hormone panel and CMP done. Of course you need to go to your Dr and tell him what's going on and what you want to do...

Every once in a while I get something similar although I stopped nursing almost 2 years ago but never in both breasts at the same time. And my discharge was never clear, it looked like milk. I would bring this up at your next check up.

Don't wait until your next checkup, as someone suggested. If this were part of your normal cycle, you wouldn't be worried enough to post here. Call your gynecologist today and get seen as soon as possible -- while the symptoms are still there (so don't let them push you off for weeks). This may be nothing but you have no way to know.

The person who mentioned caffeine is right; caffeine can promote benign cysts in the breast, in women who are prone to what is called fibrocystic breasts -- like me. For some of us, only a very little caffeine can cause pain in the breast and, frighteningly, lumps. Mention fibrocystic breasts to your doctor. However I've never had any discharge, and I know that all the guidelines on breast self-exams say that any discharge is a reason to see your doctor. Let us know what happens.

I would let them know at your obgyn about the discharge but I had something similar and dr said it most likely is normal. I had all kind of testing to make sure, mammos and sonograms. they found one little spot I had a stereotactic biopsy (took fluid from the spot with a needle. turned out benign, fine. As far as the pain goes, after childbearing the breast tissue is sensitive. My doctor told me caffeine could be causing the pain ythe breasts. I didnt even drink a lot of caffeine. I am not a coffee drinker. Jus a coke once in a while and also chocolate. But I cut out all caffeine for a while and the pain was totally gone. Just wanted to let you know my experience with those symptoms but please still tell your doctor about it and get checked just in case. I was going to have the mammos anyway because I was 40 at the time and thats when they start the routine testing.

I have that pain when I drink coffee or cappacino's. Not sure about the discharge. What is normal for one person may not be normal for another person however. I would go see a doctor.

I have been told that chocolate and soda makes them hurt and I am a victim of both quite a lot actually. I also doubled up on birth control for a few days when I missed some pills and felt an indent. When I read up on breast cancer it described exactly what I was feeling. I was freaking out. I had a mammogram and things were fine. The DR. said it was probably from my hormones with taking multiple pills in a day to get back on track. A few days later I didn't even notice it and the pain stopped. It is always good to get checked out. Drs know so much more about cancer now than they did back when our parents were our age. Good Luck. Let us know what happened.

See a doctor, but don't panic. I never nursed but my mom did and had occasional discharge. At the same time that is a symptom that should be checked by the doctor as soon as possible. That was the first sign when one of my friends had breast cancer. She went to the doctor right away and it saved her life.
