My son has little bumps running down his sides & the bottom of his legs. You can't see them, but you can feel them. He doesn't act like they bother him, and i haven't changed my laundry detergent, baby wash, or any new food that I can think of. Any ideas on what they might be and how to make it go away. Thanks

What can I do next?

Try the healthfood store, and get some jojoba(pronounced hohoba) oil. It has helped my sons excema when nothing else would work.

You said that you haven't changed baby wash. That may be you problem. Most children (babies too) cannot use "baby" washes. The dyes and frangrances are too harsh. Try Cetaphil soap and lotion. I have 18 month old twins that are the same way. After I spoke to our pediatrician, I found out the majority of babies cannot use normal baby washes. This worked for us and it should work for you too.

Hey M.!

I would try a little benadryl or hydrocortozone cream. They both worked well with "bumps" on my kids...and my son has extremely sensative skin. Sounds like he is having an allergy of some sort. Could be pets, dust, I used to get the same thing from just plain old grass...could be anything! But I wouldn't worry to much unless they bother him or become infected from scratching.

Good luck!

My son and my husband both get really bad flare ups of eczema through trial and error we discovered that what really helps is using cetaphil soap and lotion. You may want to try to change your laundry detergent to a free and clear type like ALL. The detergent you are using can be an irritant. Also, eating a lot of dairy products can also cause a flare. If it keeps getting worse, you may want to call his doctor.

Hi M.,

It does sound like Eczema, but I would have your son checked just to be sure. My daughter has had it since birth and I had to try a different lotion every two weeks until I found one that really helped. Even Aquaphor wasn't cutting it... Surprisingly, the Burts Bees Baby lotion works great! (you can find this at most Cracker Barrels surprisingly). We have had hydrocortozone and some steriod cremes too.. Be careful of steriod creams as they can bleach skin (we haven't had this happen). The best advice is to lotion them up right after a bath, and DONT bathe them every day, as it dries out the skin and makes it worse.

Eczema also gets worse in summer typically, and you will most likely see it in "cracks" - back of neck, armpits, back of knees and elbows, but it isn't always just there.. Best of luck to you!

My daughter had this same problem and we used a hydrocortisone cream and kept her legs lotioned. It finally went away but is worse during certain seasons and is now worse that we live somewhere that the humidity isnt as bad so the air is drier. The best lotion/cream I've found is Eucerin. Also Aquaphor works great if you don't want to use the hydrocortison cream. I would say if you do use something and it doesnt clear up w/in 2 weeks of using it to call the dr because he may need a prescription strength

My son has this as well, I asked his peditrician and my dermatologist and I hate to say that I can remember the name of it. They told me that it is something hereditary (sp?) and part of having dry skin. (I have dry skin on my side of the family) They both told me there is nothing much that can be done other than to keep the skin hydrated with a good lotion. (Baby oil will make it worse) I try to make a point to put a nivea lotion on my sons legs when he gets out of the bath and that has seemed to help a good bit. Hope that works.

They sound like "chicken bumps" (not the correct med term, of course) caused by very dry/sensitive skin...my son inherited them from his father. Eucerin lotion...the very thick stuff that comes in a tub...is good; use it in the morning and at night after bathtime. Sephora reportedly has a cream to get rid of these bumps but for a smallish tube it costs $36. Eucerin is like $15 and it lasts forever. I hope this helps.

M.,

All of my 6 children (5 step and 1 biological) have those same bumps on their legs, arms, trunk, etc. Their pediatrician said it is dermatisis, which is basically just dry skin. I have the same problem on my arms, especially during cold weather. It is nothing to worry about. Lotion tends to help. However, if you pick or scratch at the bumps, it may cause them to swell and bleed slightly, so my advice is to just use lotion during cold weather.
Hope this helps!

It sounds like eczema. My daughter is 2 and just recently started this. Try some Hyrdocortizine cream. Also you can try washing him in Gilette white foamy shaving cream. My mother-in-law works for a dermatologist and this was there suggestion.

probably exzema (really dry skin patches). My son has this randomly and the dermatologist can give him a prescription lotion that you put on three times a day that will clear it up. He told me he would probably outgrow it by age 12 or sooner. Try oatmeal baths too and maybe even sponge baths if the water tends to make it flare up.

I agree that it is probably Exzema. I have had it since I was born and my three month old is starting to show signs of it. Try using Aveeno products. They seem to work the best. Also use non soap cleansers. Exzema can show up in different ways. Little bumps, that often pop containing a clear substance. Check behind his knees and elbows. That is the most common areas. It can also just look like very dry skin. Try patting him dry softly after baths. Alow to air dry as much as possible. Also, lotion him up before bed, just make sure he is all covered up with pj's. It can feel icky to a little guy. Good luck. Let us know how it works.

You'll never believe this, but my 6 yr old had the same problem. I took him to the Doctor, spent 35.00 co-pay, he had dry skin. Try some healing aveeno lotion for 3 or 4 days. You'll be amazed. Who thought little buggers like that can get dry skin??
