I was wanting to get some opinions on what age you think is safe for a child to sleep on the top bunk.

What can I do next?

Hey M. ! My boys got bunk beds at 5 and 3 ! My 5 year old slept on top and just loved it ! Not to say my 3 year old never got up there because he did ! The bunks we bought had screw in rails with a latter that also screwed into place so it couldn't just "fall" off !

It depends how well your child picks up on things and such. My daughter will be 4 in Feb. but she sleeps on the top bunk. The only problem that we had was worring about her climbing down the ladder half asleep so we made her practice before she got to sleep up there. By practice I mean we made her go up and down them randomly for a couple of days before and everytime she went down them the correct way without having to be told or showed she got a "big girl" treat then we tried it and she did great. Also the bunk beds I have I got them from Super Kmart and they have a high railing so I don't have to worry about her rolling off.

I have a little girl that will be 5 in January. She sleeps on the top bunk and has for a few months, and isn't afraid of the ladder. We attached towel rods to the side of the ladder to give her more room for her hands, and she even does well climbing down in her sleep. My daughter doesn't wear socks in bed so I can't say she would if she did have socks on. She loves laying up there, and she was scared at first, but I slept with her one night up there and now she is no longer scared. It has a little bit of a guard rail and not very high but she is a calm sleeper and we put her "babies" towards the edge she can roll off on and she hasn't.

Two of my boys share a bedroom and they just got bunkbeds a few months ago. The oldest sleeps on the top and he's 7 the 5 yrs old sleeps on the bottom. The tops bunk had rails thick attached he hasn't been the one falling out of bed since he was around 4 or 5 so he got the top. The 5 yr old stills falls out of bed off and on. I don't know what age is really right for a child I think it depends on when a parent feels comfortable and to me if they are one to fall out even if there are bars I wouldn't let my 5 yr old sleep on top for another year. Personal opinion top bunk ages 7 up to me are best.

The CPSC recommends 6 years for bunk beds.

I think that any child who is about 4 or so and who can climb without any assistance would be fine to sleep on the top. I would make sure that there is a guard rail so that they don't fall off. I would also check to see of they can EASILY climb up and down the ladder in the dark without slipping, even with socks on. Sometimes those ladders are real skinny and don't have a good platform for feet.

Depending on what kind of sleeper ur child is, like if he/she tends to roll or sleep walk then I would not until they outgrew that but if that is not the case then around 5 or 6 isnt a bad age for bunk beds.I had bunk begs around that age also.If your children are "wild" than you can expect them to climb all over it which always poses a risk of someone getting stuck inbetween the bars or falling or jumping off the steps. But as far as sleeping 5 and up are a decent age to let them sleep on top.

We just bought our son a bunk bed a couple of months ago, after her turned 6 yo. We may be conservative but I wanted to make sure he was physically capable and strong enough to get up and down very easily.

He loves it and appreciates it more since it took a couple of years for us to cave in.

Good luck!

for us it has been between 5 and 6... and only with kids who function well when they wake in middle of the night- like to go to the bathroom. My heavy sleeper is not allowed to sleep on the top because she does not become coherant enough to navigate the ladder when half asleep!
