I had Sweet Addition in Gilman Village make my son's cake for his b-day. I don't think they do much in the way of shape cakes though. But everything they make is DELICIOUS!
I'm looking for a cake maker/decorator or even a local bakery for my son's 2nd birthday cake. I'm not a big fan of grocery store bakery cakes and the wedding cake makers seem so elaborate and expensive, so hoping to find someone or a local bakery that can create a yummy cake with fillings and nice themed decorations. Anyone have any recommendations? I'd make my own cake from scratch, but I am not artistic at all and want the cake to be cute. Haven't picked out the theme yet, but likley will be a jungle animal theme or something like that.
Thanks everyone for the great advice and recommendations. Have not made any decisions yet, but need to do so in the next few weeks. Will check out all the local bakeries you suggested. Super helpful. Thanks.

It's really not that hard to make your own cake. If you don't feel you have artistic ability, just make a basic cake, from the box, add some miniatures to the top, add name and age of your child in candy letters and viola! For decoration you can find many different add-ons-If you have a Michaels or Joanns, most of your battle is already won. Look at pictures of others cakes you admire and go from there. Good luck! Pam
I don't live close, but would be willing to meet 1/2 way. I do make cakes - pretty reasonably priced.

Try Sweet Additions in Gilman Village.
The last place you'd expect makes the BEST cakes. Go into any little mexican tienda. Theres one in Issaquah called El Venadito which has a restaurant next door with the same name. Ask them about cakes. A lot of these stores order them with whatever words and themes and fillings you want. The cakes is a 'tres leches' which is regular cake with 3 kinds of milk so its 'juicy'. I've had them with strawberry, coconut, chocolate, peach fillings. These are the most professional and beautiful cakes I've seen. The usually need a few days notice as they are made elsewhere. You tell them when you want to pick it up and thats when they'll have it delivered to them so its fresh. REALLY AWESOME. I haven't ordered one from them but I have from the mexican store in Snoqualmie..many times. I got my baby shower cake there. Good luck!
i know you said you are not very creative but go to familyfun.com and look thru their cake ideas. i believe they have a jungle theme cake. i have used their recipe's before and they are easy. some may take a little time but not difficult to do. have fun. i made the princess castle cake and my daughter loved it. homemade cakes taste so much better.
Georges Bakery in North Bend makes great pasteries and cakes. I'm pretty sure they are reasonably priced. I haven't lived in the area for over 10 years but I remember they have really good items. It's not that close from Issaquah, but it's not that far away either. Their number is ###-###-####. Good Luck!!
If you can't find a bakery or cake maker in your area within your budget go ahead and make your own cake. You can decorate and then use small toys and sprinkles and ribbons etc. to make it look cute and fancy. I did not get the "frosting and decorating" gene from my mother. But for a Tinkerbell cake (a few years ago) I got some cute little figurines and some fake flowers (that matched the invitation)and placed those on the top of the plain white frosted cake that I made. I added a few sprinkles and some curley ribbon around the bottom. It looked adorable! With a jungle theme you shouldn't have any trouble finding items.
Good Luck.
Even if you aren't artistic, you can still make a great cake. This is the voice of experience. ;)
One of my favorite easy ones is a bear head and paws.
Round cake for head, cup cakes for ears, cup cakes for paws
Decoration:
chocolate cake with chocolate frosting (brown bear; and chocolate with chocolate helps hide frosting goofs -- especially if you make the frosting "fuzzy - looking")
Paws: Peppermint patty and junior mints for pads of paws
Face: Neccos (black? brown? blue? green?) for eyes (junior mints for pupils if you want -- just be sure to "glue" them on with a dot of frosting)
licorice string for mouth
gumdrop for nose
You could use a 2nd round cake for body if you want to. then put four paws on for "hands" and "feet".
Need more cake to serve more people? Make more "paws"!
This looks long, but it is really simple. Let me know if you'd like a photo. I have photos of others, too, if you'd like other ideas. As you would see by the photos, I am NOT a professional and would never win any prizes at a fair! But the cakes are cute, if I do say so myself! :) So if I can do it, anyone can. It is so much less expensive to do it yourself. And it creates great memories with the kids. My kids love getting to pick out their "theme". They are even coming up with some creative ideas of how to do them!
Basically, have fun with it. It doesn't have to be perfect, just taste good! :)
Have fun!
I'm not sure how close you mean by close...
in Old downtown Bothell is a great Bakery,. Hillcrest Bakery.. I have been getting my kids cakes there for several years,.. not to mention any other occaision I need. ###-###-####
it's only a few minutes off the I-405 freeway. the folks there are very friendly :)
-I also agree with the other gal... these days most party supply stores + micheals has lots of toppers, as well as places on-line and all you do is frost and it's practically done. I always freeze my cakes for about 1-2 hours before putting the frosting on..it helps keep the 'crumbs' out of the icing. (also allows you to make the cake (& or layers) slightly ahead of time - or if you are one of those who is good at planning.. a few days ahead of time :)
but when i don't have time or just don't feel like it... I order them from Hillcrest !!
Hancock's Bakery is a great family owned and operated bakery in Redmond (across the street from the post office). Their cakes are yummy and the have a great cake decorator. He can reproduce just about any picture you bring in (once they made me a candyland cake complete with Gloppy the molasses monster my daughter wanted). Their phone number is ###-###-####. Good Luck!
Hi M.-
I know you said that you did not feel like you could make your own cake because you are not artistic, but I am not artistic and have made all my kids cakes. The web-site Family Fun has easy and fun cakes based on many fun themes. I made my son a crocodile cake for a safari themed party.
Hope this helps. Have fun at the party.

Hi.
Most grocery stores on Eastside do these kinds of cakes.
I used Albertsons, Safeway and Fred Meyers.. Good experience with all the them.
Okay, sorry this is kind of vague (and hopefully they still exist because it has been a few years since I've been out that direction), but there is a little bakery inside Gilman Village (not positive, but I think they may have had sandwich/deli items available too?). I don't remember the name, but they have some really delicious cakes and goodies, and I used to know a lady who worked there who was a pastry chef and I tried a cake she made for a wedding once that was the most delicious dessert I've ever eaten! And it was gorgeous too :). They probably wouldn't be the cheapest, but definitely worth it if you can afford to splurge!
I know you said you are not a fan of grocery store cakes but you also mentioned you'd like a yummy filling. Safeway makes a cake that has a great strawberry filling. They use real strawberries. If you get the light and fluffy icing (cant't remember what it is called) it is delicious!!
The best cakes I have ever had.. were from whole foods.. yum.. they are good and not as pricy as a wedding place.. I had them do Hello Kitty one year.. Then they told me the year after b/c of copywrite laws they could not do disney tinker bell.. but they still did an awesome job with a fairy.. I did these cakes when my kids were younger and mostly adults at the party.. now for my 6 year old for the kids i do Fred myer b/c they have the copywrite for alot of disney designs and my little pony.. and that is all 6 year olds care about.. but for my birthday my husband always gets me a whole food cake.
Best of luck,
Lenc
