Calling All Moms of Tweens (And Beyond)!

Hi, mommas!

Two questions to ask you.

The first is how to deal with my daughter's stinky feet. Most days we wash them thoroughly (we let her feet air dry after and keep the shoes off) only to have them stinky a few hours later again.

The second inquiry is whether anyone has used any OTC cleansers for their 9 (almost 10) year old daughters. My daughter started developing about six months ago and I've noticed that she has some mild pimple looking blemishes on her skin. They usually clear up after a week or so, but I'm wondering if she might need some type of cleanser. Have any of you mommas used cleansers or astringents on your tween's face? If so, what type/brand?

Thank you all so much. This has been such a helpful place for me to ask child rearing questions.

Many thanks,
L.

Get her (and you) the "American Girl" book series.
It is JUST for girls, this age. Tweens.
There are many GOOD topics and about hygiene.
To be read by the girl and her Mom.
It is not intimidating and age appropriate. Nothing graphic.
But informative. Factual.

Any bookstore has it.

My daughter is 9. She has lots of these books, which I got for her.
She LOVES them. And she likes talking WITH me about it. We read it together even.
She is even reading one right now in fact!
She tells me, to tell you, (she is here as I type), to go get it!

In addition to the other suggestions, be sure to air out her shoes. It works best to have two pairs and wear them every other day. Also sprinkle a foot powder in them. I think Gold Bond has a good one but there are others. You can find them in the section of the supermarket that displays foot care items in the personal care section.

I am allergic to red dyes and as a preteen my feet stunk to high heaven. We switched to white athletic socks and I have been fine. Sometimes pantyhose will make them stinky too. I only wear them to church in the winter.

My daughter uses Aveeno. She is 14 and has highly sensitive skin. It has helped her tremendously. I started getting it for her about 3 years ago.

Make sure she wears only all-cotton socks and see if that helps. It's hard to find them, though. Most socks have at least some spandex in them (which makes feet sweat more). Go for socks with the highest cotton content you can possibly find. Cotton "breathes" and lets air get to the feet better. Also, before she puts on socks, have her dust her feet with corn starch; put it into a shaker like an old salt shaker so it "dusts" better and have her do it while sitting on the edge of the tub, with her feet in the dry tub -- reduces mess. Corn starch absorbs wetness and odor and is far cheaper than using baby powder! She should re-dust her feet and change socks if she comes in and then is going out again to play or to an activity or sport or whatever. See if that helps.

We have used Neutrogena anti-acne face washes for my daughter and it's been OK but does not prevent all breakouts -- nothing can prevent hormone related breakouts but things can treat them. The problem I have is getting my daughter to USE them with enough regularity -- sometimes she is in a hurry and just uses water on her face and that doesn't build up the benefits of the acne wash. Don't go with any strong astringents! They will dry out your girl's face. You can also get Neutrogena's acne cream just for the specific spots and that has worked for us.

since about 9 my boys have used the equate brand of the noxezima. They use the face wash at night and the cleanser pads in the morning before school.

Once a week they use a black head cleaner ( it has little beads in it. The beads aren't as harsh on thier skin as the sand cleaners.)

They have helped alot to cut down on break outs.

Foot powder Scholl's has a good one, in the shoes. Two pairs of shoes so they dry completely. Athletic socks and dietary sugegstions are all good ideas. Everyone's body is slightly different try out what works for you and your daughter. My daughter fought tooth and nail over changing socks (she liked the trendy patterns) but easily adapted to putting powder in her shoes...

Face again depends on the kid and their skin. We tried Mary Kay, Neutrogena Acne wash and Cetaphil sensitive skin wash. We also had a chat with the doctor. Skin changes frequently at this age and will change with the season. You may have to experiment and adapt. In the winter she uses Cetaphil in the morning and Mary Kay in the evening. By next summer I suspect what worked last summer won't any more.

I do agree with the recommendation on the book. I put it in her room and left it to her she says she's not interested, but I have caught her reading it at night. ;-)

Probiotics are very helpful for body odor. Often smelly feet are a result of yeast overgrowth in the body. Cut down on starchy and gluten heavy foods like pastas and certain breads. Up yogurt and try foods like Kefir. Probiotics are a natural deterent. She should drink more water to flush the system as well. Kids in school all day often get dehydrated if they don't adequate access and intake of water. More water may also help with the acne too.

Hi,

My pediatric dermatologist recommended very mild facial cleanser Cetaphyl. It will keep the pores clean and open. It even has a disclaimer that is suitable for children's skin, nothing harsh or harmful. We just started using it. I wonder if anyone else has tried it and what is the feedback?
