I have an 8 month old and I am trying to get him to drink his juice from a sippy cup. The problem is that he just plays with the sippy cup. He will not suck from it, and will only naw on the spout(he doesnt have teeth yet). The only way I have gotten him to drink his juice is if I take the lid off and hold it for him to drink out of like a cup. I have tried to take out the spill-proof valve, so that he doesnt have to suck too hard, but then he throws and shakes it and it ends up everywhere. I also do not want to give it to him out of a bottle because I read somewhere that that is bad. Just some extra info: he breastfeeds with me and I pump milk into a bottle for him to drink while I am at work. Should I get rid of the bottle completely, or is it too early for that?
I would keep breastfeeding but I found a NUBY cup at walmart and the spout is flexible like a bottle nipple but is also a no spill proof cup too. My 6 month old daughter can drink out of it.

Seems like you have already the Nuby sippy cup. I have a link to a picture on the internet. Not the cheap ones for 2 dollar at wallmart, they sometimes spill because the cap screw thread is to short. But Burlington have them. They can last up to 3 years, even if you take them everywhere with you, every day.

My 3 sons started to drink from the straw cup from nuby when they were 10 months. The almost 3 year old still uses it when we're going somewhere because its absolutely spill proof. And again, it will survive a couple of years. Sometimes you have to replace the straw when they are biting on it. Maybe your son will drink from a straw cup? (also at Burlington) They say drinking from a straw is better for their lips and speach than drinking from a sippy cup. Drinking from a normal cup is the best they say, but also the messiest....

NUBY leak-proof, straw cups are the best!! My BF dd had no problems with this straw cup, but hated the regular sippies. I bought a bunch before deciding this was it. My advice is to by one or two ONLY, so you don't waste a lot of money trying to find the right cup. I find that learning with the straw first is the way to go, because they will be able to drink from a regular cup with lid and straw when you go out to eat. It is also better for the teeth.
The poster below is referring to the insulated cups with designs on them, as opposed to the larger see-thru, non-insulated variety. I have both and find that if you do not get the lid on any of the cups just right, they will ALL leak. So just be sure to line the lids up right to start, then test it over the sink before giving it to the baby. (I have learned this the HARD way!! :) )
No, it is not too early to skip the bottle with a BF baby, IMO. As long as you find a cup that he can use properly. Of course, some babies have a hard time adjusting to the increased flow of a cup, so just watch out for that. My DD used a bottle 'til she started on whole cow's milk, so it is not imperitive to get him off the bottle so early. Just use your best judgement on that one.

I have yet to find one that doesn't leak, but my daughter finally seems to have the hang of drinking from a sippy cup (she is 10 mo. old now). I got the kind with the handles on the sides and a softer spout. I first started giving her a cup around 7-8 months and she just chewed on it for a couple of months also. I only put water in it and now she LOVES to drink the water from it. I think if you just keep giving it to him, he will figure it out eventually.

I love the Nuby sippy cup with the soft silicone sipper. (close to a bottle but a good transition)
Try the nuby sippy cups that has the straw effect that closes and open so they won't spill anywhere, don't get the clear ones cause those leak. Get the ones with the different designs on them, I bought my son's at Target and Walmart.
My son is 18 months and still prefer those over any other ones.

We had the same problem -- it was too hard to suck from most of them at first. The Nuby one with a rubber spout was good, and we really liked the plain, old-fashioned kind like the tupperware sippy cups. I think First Years and Especially for Baby make them. It's a 4-pack or 6-pack of little plastic cups with a plastic lid with spout (no stopper). It can be messy since they're not spill-proof, but the cups are perfect for later when they're no longer using sippy cups.
Also the "Take n Toss" cups are great -- no stopper and they're spill-proof!
I breastfed until he was 13 months, but around 12 mo we switched from bottle to NUBY cups, and those are still the only kind of cups he likes to drink from. We tried introducing the sippys earlier, but he just wanted to play with them. It wasn't until he was about a year old that he got the hang of them.
I used the Gerber ones with the soft rubber spout and the handles on the side with my son when he was about 8 months old, but it took him several months to actually drink from it. He will just give it time. Right now just introduce it like your doing and put a little water or whatever in it and let him play with it. He will eventually figure it out. Put it up to his lips and show him but don't force it he will get the hang of it.
My daughter was awayfrom the bottle completely between 11-12 months.But instead of teaching her to use a sippy cup i thought her to use a straw.( very easy for breast fed babies)
I bought a sport cap insulated straw cup from BRY ( its theone with the soft spout) and gav eit to her several times and she finally in about 1 week learned to drink from it.Once she mastered the straw i gave her the milk even BM from the straw cup at about 10-11 months and then at about 11 months when i started weaning her off my breast I gave her cow's milk in a straw cup.
she is now 17 months and can drink from a regulat cup very very well by her self.

I had the same problem with mine -- I weaned him at 10 months. I had several friends recommend the nuby one but I didn't like that one because my son couldn't ever figure out that you had to bite down to make the liquid flow... I just wanted him to suck so that he didn't start trying to bite down on me. I started introducing the sippy cut to my daughter when she was 6 months old, she would play with it mostly but would drink of it too, it will take them time to get used to it and know what to do. At 8 months we stopped using the bottle completely and now only uses a sippy cup, she can drink from a cup now she is 19 months old now. Get one that has a soft spout, I had gotten a hard spout at first and she didn't like it much, but with the soft spout it didn't take long at all for her to get used to it. I breastfed her also for a year. I started giving her water at first and she LOVES water, she will take water over juice.
