Can I Ride a Bike While Pregnant?

So I am 21 weeks pregnant and I also happen to have a 9 month old. I live near this rail trail which is completely flat and I walk it quite often. My wee one is getting so big and I recently bought a trailer for the back of my bike. I have heard rumors that you should not bike while pregnant but I am looking for something to do with my young one that will be easy and keep him preoccupied. Can I ride a bike while pregnant? I am a very active person and I usually carry him in a back pack but I just think that for a couple more weeks perhaps I could ride a bike and pull him on flat ground. Any suggestions. I am not looking to do it for exercise just a nice way to be outdoors with my little one.

What can I do next?

The only reason I could see is the difference in balancing might make falling more likely, but I would do it. I'm not much of a biker, but I was cross-country running into my third trimester, and everything was fine!

Ha! Funny I should see this question today...My husband and I rode our bikes to the beach with our daughter yesterday (she's on his bike), and we live in a town with a lot of hills. I'm 38 weeks pregnant and I felt like I could've given birth on the bike! I never heard that you shouldn't ride while preg, but just wear a helmet and be careful, and 38 weeks plus might be too far along ;-)
Good Luck!

I did, but I also did before I got pregnant. I stopped shortly after 3 months because I was to out of breath to continue. We started walking then.

You're not supposed to? I did... Ask your doc; I was fine ;) I would ride a bike before wearing him in a backpack...

The reason they say you should'nt is because you are off balance and could easily fall. I think if you feel fine and aren't waddling all over the place, then go ahead and ride your bike. I'm on my third pregnancy and never have I felt off balance. I say, go ahead and ride!! :)

Well, I never heard that one... I rode my bike until about 1 month before giving birth and that was because I was starting to have trouble balancing the bike!

Go for it! Bike riding is a great way to get some exercise and to be outside. Enjoy your spring weather! The bike trailer is a great option for you because it won't affect the balance of the bike. Keep riding as long as you feel comfortable doing so.

I wouldn't recommend it out of fear of you falling and hurting the baby, or yourself, as your balance is off due to pregnancy.

I would say no. I would take the stroller put him in it and go for a walk. I would be worried with all the bouncing whether the ground is flat or not. In another three weeks or so they will be opening the swimming pools then you can take him swimming. good luck

The main risks to riding a bicycle when you are pregnant is that it is difficult to maintain your balance, your joints get looser, and if you fall you can cause pre-term birth. Obviously, some people do it the whole time and get away with it. On the other hand, my mom smoked the whole time she was pregnant with me, but I'm not going to do that with my kids.

Get a stroller and take your kid out in that. It isn't as far to fall. Into your third trimester, it's just not worth the risk, IMHO.

Hi -
The book, "What to Expect When Expecting" says "No." But, I was pregnant in Germany, I asked my OB/GYN, and she looked at me surprised and said, "Why not?" So, I did. Until, that is, it got too uncomfortable hauling my heavier self around...
