Can Missing a Period Really Be No Big Deal?

I am about 2 weeks overdue for my period. I am not pregnant, since I know I was not sexually active in the last couple of months. I have been under a lot of stress at work, but I didn't think it was anything to cause a physical problem - I have certainly been under stress before. I have not been sick nor have I started a new medicaiton. I am mot on birth control.

I have NEVER missed a period other than for pregnancy or breastfeeding since I was 13 years old. I am 38 years old. I am freaking out thinking about meopause and tumors. I know people say you can miss due to stress, but it just doesn't seem like that could be all it is.

Has anyone ever just skipped one month for no apparent reason? And then gone back to normal?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, your answers made me feel much better. I hate having my period, but wow it feels so weird not to have it. I have my well-woman exam this summer so, I will definately follow-up then, but at least I feel like I can not be so worried about it now.

I also realized I used a prescription topical cortizone cream for about 3 weeks in April. I know tha tcortizone can affect your thyroid, so I wonder if that could be it? Seems unlikely, but that with the stress and the fact that I have been slowly losing weight (about a pound a week) maybe combined to do this??

Yes, you can miss a period from being stressed, change in weight, exercise, all kinds of stuff. Yes, I have a missed periods for those things. I think it's only happened twice in the 20+ years I've been getting my period. Things change as you get older & have kids too. The body is a crazy, crazy thing and hard to get a handle on.

It depends on your cycles. If you are consistently normal and then miss, you should get yourself checked out to be safe.

I'm always irregular. I've gone a full year with NO period whatsoever. Not a big deal for me because this is not unusual. I've been that way ever since I've had a period.

I would put a call into your gyno. Could be anything really. Could also be recent weight gain or loss if you have had that.

Yep, it happens. Especially as you get older and your hormones become more unpredictable.

If it is super unusual for you, call your health care provider, you may just go in for your annual a little early...

Yes, sometimes it really is no big deal.
I don't know how old you are, but if you are in your 40's your periods can become more irregular as you head towards menopause. Hot flashes and night sweats are a sign.
I'm 49 and my personal best to date is 51 days between periods (and there's no way I'm pregnant).
If you're not in your 40's, any number of things can knock your period out of whack that are not pregnancy related. Stress, change in diet/exercise, gaining/losing weight, weather, etc. Some even say that collage room mates will synchronize periods given enough time. Changes in your thyroid can do it too so have your TSH level checked out.

Yes, it really can be "no big deal".....it is a bit startling at first but typically no worries!

It hasn't happened to me in a while (due to pregnancies and birth control) but when I was younger I missed one now and again and it was fine. I'm sure things are fine in your situation too. In the famous words of Arnold Schwartzeneger (Kindergarten Cop) "It's not a tumor!"

Yes I did do that last yr. My period for feb was lighter than usual, skipped march and started late april? I know I wasn't pregnant or under any unusal stress? It just happened?

I am 33, and have found just recently that I have gone from having one every month like clockwork to only having one every 2 or 3 months. I have been told it is just part of aging and is normal after 30, but for sure talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

I didn't ever miss a period (unless preggo or nursing) until a couple years ago when my youngest finally weaned. Haven't been using birth control cause hubby got snipped after our youngest was born. Was under lots and lots of stress and my body skipped two months! Things calmed down and I was back to my 26-30 day schedule again, just two weeks earlier/later then I'd expect. I've since skipped a period here or there, but always when I'm under a huge amount of stress.

Dr. said not to worry unless its been months (6+) since I've had one, and even then they'd start looking at possible early menopause. My paps and exams have been normal, soooo my skipped periods is really only stress related.
hope that helps, enjoy the bonus!

I have a 30 day cycle. As long as I am cycling (post puberty and 8 months after the birth of my daughter) I am regular as the seasons.

I have been "late", three times in my life.

When I was twenty (I am 26 now) and was not on birth control, I had my regular menses, and then continued to spot for a month and a half. It took another month before I synced back up. I went into the Doctor, and she ran tests, did a pap, etc. Nothing was amiss, she said.

The second time was when I was twenty-one and pregnant with my daughter.

The third (I have a paragaurd IUD) was this past winter, after my marriage. I took two pregnancy tests (my mom has gotten pregnant while she had an IUD) and was flipping out. Big time. On the full moon, I began bleeding (I had been synced with the new moon). Wild stuff our bodies do sometimes. Wild.
