So I got my Chicco car seat out that I used with my first son, in prep for the big day coming up and thought It could use a wash for the new baby, but it had this strange smell to it? I washed it,set it outside to dry, and it's smelled even worse, It's hard to even explain the smell like onion or burnt plasticy type smell, so i rewashed it and did the same and its still a wierd odor, i tried spraying febreeze on it too.. it's just strange..
I don't get why it smells, my house doesn't smell, none of my other laundry ever smells. Any advice or ideas on what I could do.. its too nice of a travel system and seat to get a new one..?? Thanks for any advice!!

Where were you storing the car seat? I recently got an extra high chair out of our attic and it also had a weird smell on the fabric cover. I washed it over and over again until I really inspected the whole chair. I guess the heat of the attic slightly melted the plastic of the chair onto the fabric. If this is the case you are probably safer replacing the seat. If it is just the cover maybe consider making or purchasing a new cover from the manufacturer.
Congrats on your upcoming arrival.

I have used the Febreeze laundy additive with good success in the past. Sometimes if you aren't too scared diluted bleach can work well. Vinegar is also good for household odors.

Also, be sure to check the expiration date on the seat before reusing. We planned to do the same thing with ours and discovered we only had a month before it expired so we had to get a new one. The plastic can weaken after a long time and is less effective. Congrats on the new arrival.

I would try plain old white vinegar which is the best cure all for household cleaning & smells. Good luck!

All baby things before storing need to be THOROUGHLY cleaned. This may be a smell from being slightly dirty in storage for a bit. Try soaking the cover in oxiclean for 6 hours then washing. Follow soaking instructions, like 1 big scoop for every gallon of water, I usually put like 8 scoops for a washer full of water to soak (Also do this to anything you want to put in storage BEFORE you store it). Look for old stains and spot treat it as well before you wash again. Baking soda is also good. But if these things don't help, get rid of it. It could mean there is mold INSIDE the cover that you can never get rid of. FYI I never use highchair covers if they've been in storgage, ever.

I have had my bouts with funny smells too! I use a product called Sol-u-mel which takes smoke smells out (from camping and roasting marsmallows!) to the nasty dead animal smell of my cornish hen that didn't quite make it into my downstairs freezer, only to be found 3mos. later rotting under a laundry basket! Agghhh! I love this stuff because even my 7yr & 9yr old can clean the house safely without exposure to harmful fumes. Send me an email and I'd be happy to share how you can shop for the sol-u-mel and more non-caustic home cleaners/laundry products! If you live nearby, I'd be happy to stop by and help you clean too!

I A. Tried sprinkling some baking soda on it and see if that helps. Or ask Heloise. She's has a website and has plenty of remedies.
