Cat Hair

Thankfully the two cats we have now don't shed much (it really depends on the cats!) But the two we had before them shed like crazy! On my bedspread I would actually use packaging tape! You know, the thicker, clear kind. The lint rollers never would work but that tape would work really well. It does take a few minutes and it seems like you use a lot but it does work.

Pledge makes a handheld device that works great. I forget exactly what it's called but they advertise it by dropping a white couch in a box with black cats. It's $5 and you get it in the cleaning products aisle at Publix. The only thing is that they say it's for one time use, once it's fully you're supposed to toss it. I popped mine open though and empty it and use it again. I've been using it for about 3 months and it's starting to get wornb ut I definitely feel like i got my $5 worth.

Cat hair is very hard to get rid of. I have 2. I have an oreck that is pretty good. I do shake the comforters outside every 3 days or so. Also, those velvety brushes that you use on suites are awesome. I'm sorry i cant think of the name but it has a handle and a flat surface that has a velvety feel to it. You can get it in bed, bath, and beyond.

On flat surfaces like couches, we've had great success with the new Pledge pet hair remover. I sometimes follow it with a stick roller to get every last piece, but it does a pretty good job on its own. We were going through sticky rollers like crazy before, and now we've only used one Pledge thing where we would have used at least 10 rollers.

I have 4 cats, 3 of them are long haired. I also have a Dyson (the pet hair model), which I think is absolutely fabulous on the carpets. My sofa is a tightly woven microfiber and does very well with resisting embedded hair. The only other tip I can offer you is to do what I do...I have my cats shaved by a pet groomer once per year (the "lion" hair cut, lol). This is enormously helpful in cutting down the amount of hair they lose throughout the year. I do it every spring, so they do not nearly as much hair throughout the spring and summer. It's growing back by the time the weather cools, and at that point, I just comb them out about every other day to remove loose hair. This has been a wonderful solution for us.

I've got two cats so I feel your pain! lol I've got the dyson as well and it does a great job on the getting the hair off my microfiber couch. What I would suggest is taking the cats one at a time outside to an enclosed area and give them a good brushing about once a week. If your cats are in doors, then to me it always seems like they don't really shed in the summer time like outdoor cats door. So that leaves it to fall out all over your house!!

We have a long haired cat and a ladies hair brush in a drawer in the family room. Each night I take the brush out of the drawer and tap it on the floor several times and the cat comes running and stretches herself out. Clearly this is like her kitty spa treatment and she turns her motor on as soon as the brush appears. I brush every part of her and then dispose of the hair. She has learned to flatten herself out like a kitty-cat rug for this event. Honestly, I rarely ever see any cat hair in my house nor have I ever seen her cough up a hair ball!

I cannot say enough about how much I love my Bissell vacuum. It has so much power it pulls up everything in its way. It has a hand attachment that I use on furniture. The downside is it is very heavy. Every time I vacuum I feel as though I've had a workout, but there is great satisfaction in seeing how clean my floors and furniture is. I then go over the furniture with a sticky roller to get the hairs stuck in the fabric. Or you could use a "lint brush" like Karen was describing.

If it's a lot of hair, using a rubber glove (the kind you'd use to do the dishes) and rub it across the surface. You may have to play a little with the right amount of pressure to rub your hand across with, but I found that it was pretty effective for getting the majority of the dog hair out of a fleece blanket.
