I used bubble wrap to keep my cat off of my couch. He would jump on my couch and his claws would pop the bubbles and he would jump off. After a while, he wouldn't try to get on the couch at all. Aluminum foil might work to.
Good luck.
I am expecting my first baby in June and we have the room put together (the furniture came in 4 weeks instead of the 10 they said).
My cat thinks that I have decorated a room just for her! She will not stay out of the crib! What do I do? I would like to get this resolved before he arrives...please help!

Depending on her response to the baby she will probably be a little nervous towards it and not want to be in there once it is, or very curious which isn't really harmful unless you think she could hurt the baby in some way (EX: she has her claws ans has been known to claw people either as a rough player or violently)
Ahh...we had the same issue with our two cats. You need a crib tent. I think you can get them at Babies R Us, and Wal-Mart. I am sure you can find them on-line as well. I think they are made by Tots in Mind. Good Luck!
Don't worry we have a cat does the samething.
I have a baby blanket laid out on the crib mattress.
The cat only will lay in the crib when the baby not there.
So then I pick up the blanket and lay the baby there and its free of any fur from the cat.
If they can smell the baby scent they will be ok with the baby, and remember they are your babies too.
My cat is very over protective of the baby. If there is something wrong with the baby, the cat would cry to get our attention.

I heard about a net that you can cover your crib with to keep a cat away. I personally kept my cat locked in the guest room for the night or when the baby was in the crib. I also heard that cats get attraced to the milk smell coming from the baby. Cats can actually suffocate little ones by laying on top of the baby. Be carefull and good luck!

Hi C.. I have 2 cats of my own and was concerned about the same thing. When I first put my crib up, that is where they wanted to take a nap. I didnn't know what to do. But, you know what? After the baby arrived, and we moved him into the crib, the cats wanted nothing to do with that area. Believe me, once they hear the first cry of that baby when you bring he/she home, they will not want to be anywhere near them. Also, I always closed the door to the baby's room when he is taking a nap anyway to cut down on the noise. I wouldn't stress over it. Most older people will scare you about it, but it is an old wives tale. Just relax and enjoy your pregnancy. :)
C.,
We had the same issue - line the crib with foil. Cats don't like it and they will stay away.
Congrats on overcoming infertility - I too am an "infertility survivor" - I am pregnant with my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th children :)

We had the same problem with our cat. The whole time that we were preparing the room (painting, furniture, etc), she was there the entire time. I tried to keep the door shut as much as possible, but she still got in there sometimes. Once my son came home she never tried to climb in the crib again. I think the crying irritated her. She still goes and opens my son's door and my daughter's door, but she no longer trys to sleep in their rooms.
I would not worry about it too much. Once you bring your little boy home, the cat will probably not want to be anywhere near the nursery.
We built a French door and made it high enough that our cat could not jump over it.
We had the same problem before our baby was born. My simple solution was to just to keep the door closed to keep the cats out of the room.
Check at Babies R Us or one of the baby stores (I don't think they have then at Walmart or Target) They have crib covers that fit over the crib and if you have a bumber around the inside of the crib, that should keep out the cat. My cat would jump in when we set the crib up but stopped jumping in when the baby started sleeping in the crib. But just incase she doesn't get the message you can have the cover and bumber to keep her out.
Congrats on the baby and good luck.
We were very concerned about this issue, too. We put a wooden screen door on the nursery. That way we could still hear and see in the room while baby was sleeping and the air could still circulate well, but no cats could get in. It cost about $20 at Home Depot and worked great! Congrats on overcoming infertility! I have been down that road and know the pain and joys it brings.
You could get a crib tent: http://perfectlysafe.stores.yahoo.net/96771.html
Or, if you would rather just train the cat, I would put plastic over the mattress and put some towels soaked in vinegar in the crib for a week or so. Cats hate the smell of vinegar and will eventually just not get in there because she'll start to associate it with the vinegar smell. Of course, your room will smell vinegar-y for a bit, but in the end, it will be easier to know that the cat just won't like it in there.
When I was pregnant, smells really got to me, but if the vinegar doesn't bother your (or you can stand it for a week or so), then that's what I would recommend.
We had this problem too when i was expecting. Try putting some tin foil in the crib. It'll scare them when they jump in the crib. They may stop once the baby is in there too. They are just curious.
I have a 10 mo old. My cat recently just started sleeping in her crib when my daughter isn't in it. I think once you start using the crib, your cat will realize that it doesn't know this squiggly new person and be scared off for a while. It's taken my cat this long to be OK with her (he's a very anti social cat). They were even sleeping in the crib together this weekend.
For the time being, try putting a bedsheet over the entire crib to keep your cat out.
they sell crib covers its like a netted tent. i have three cats and i had my sons room done when i was 6 months. we kept the door closed after a while because i got tired of throwing them out. eventually they learned. they dont even bother going in there now and if they do they stay far away from the crib. his door has been open since he was 2 months and never a cat hair on the sheets. its a learning process. but i have heard great feedback onthe tent things.
The tin foil works. My friend did it on her kitchen cabinets.
My cat investigated everything. She was protective of the
baby. Did sleep in crib, but at the head ...I kept blanket on bed to keep hair out. Think the purring helped my little one
sleep.
You can also try covering the crib with magazines.
Either the 'crib tent' or a 'mosquito net' will do the trick just fine! Both are available at Babies R Us. I prefered the mesquito net, cuz it is so versatile and can be used on the bassinet, crib, stroller, pack n play, whatever!!! Good luck!
