If you can stand the smell, mothballs !!
I too use aluminum foil to keep my cat from going in my floor plants. You have to be careful using it to make sure that you leave it crickled on the top so that air gets in around the plant as much as possible (it has to still be in a majority of the plant or the cat will still go in it). If you block the air it will cause your plant to get moldy and die. (speaking from experience)....works like a charm though....
Hi P.,
I have cats too, but they don't do that. Mine (well, one of mine, that is) tries to eat my spider plants or (my personal favorite) knock the plants out of the living room window. Apparently, there isn't enough room for the plants and the cats. (LOL) Anyway, the best way to keep ANY animal out of houseplants is to keep the plants up high. For example, a plant hanger. You can find these pretty much anywhere. There are braided hangers (where there's a spot for the plant pot made into the hanger), metal hangers (usually seen for outdoor plants)... I'm sure you get the idea. If your plants are floor plants, your best bet is to find a spot in the house that is high and the cats DON'T have access to it. For example, a really high bookcase (like the ones from back in the 70s and 80s). Having a spray bottle (with plain water in it) is a great way to train your cats to leave the houseplants alone. Each time the cats close in on your plants, you give them a squirt. They'll run away from the plants and eventually learn to leave your plants alone. If you feel more comfortable, you can also ask your veterinarian.
I do not have a problems with plants but I have a problem with a bird. My cat was always trying to find ways to get a the bird cage. I used double sided tape around the floor where the cage hung. After touching the tape a few times the cat will not go anywhere near it and it does not hurt them either.
P.,
Goodmorning. Hope all is well for you other than your cats. They can be frustrating with the plants, that's for sure. I personally am not allowed to have pets, but my friend has two cats who used to love to do the same thing with her plants and dig them as well. She used aluminium foil around the top layer of soil and also a water bottle to squirt them with when they tried to get into places they were not supposed to be. It took her a little while, but it was worth it, they have not done either in years now. So I hope that gives you some help. Goodluck
hello i have cats as well there is only 2 things i can think of to keep yur cats out of yur plants 1) put tin foil aroung the bottom of the plant and base to keep them out or 2) use big sea shells or rocks or marbles at the bottom it should do the trick if this helps i would love to hear back from u some cats can be stubborn
sprinlle hot pepper seeds, like the kind people use on pizza's on the dirt of the plant. Your cats may sit once but after it buns their tush, they wont go back. It wont harm their tushes by the way. Or moth balls, but be careful of your graddaughter getting at them.
Put a little container full of vinager in the pot. It helped for me
