'Cheap' and 'Disney' don't really go together but I can give you a couple of tips :)
You can save on hotels by staying in or near Downtown Disney rather than on the grounds. Check to see if the hotel you are considering has shuttle service (many of them do even -off the grounds) and then you would not necessarily have to rent a car. If there is possibly a family member or friend who is either currently active or retired (20 yrs service) in the military that would be travelling with you, you can get a big break on the park hoppers. Check Disney's website for full details on that.
I would recommend staying in one of the moderate resorts on the grounds for several reasons--the Disney Magical Express actually collects your luggage in Orlando and delivers it to the hotel while you hop off the plane and right onto a bus that takes you to your hotel. Going home, you can check in for your return flight right in your room rather than at the airport and then they shuttle you back to the airport as well. It's complimentary when you stay on the property.
Staying on property also gives you extra time in the parks as they're open longer hours for on site guests.
Disney also offers a meal plan so you can know up front what you'd be spending for meals, which is a variable many on a budget worry about. Also, you almost certainly will not need a car if you stay on property, which might balance out the higher hotel costs.

I don't know if they are still running this offer, but they were having a deal, buy 4 nights get three free. This includes lodging and park tickets for a family of 4. With this deal, we'll go to the parks for 7 days and the eighth day cost only about $12 for our entire family of 5 to get an extra park tickets - that's for the whole family, not per person. We're staying at a value resort on the Disney property. We chose to get the meal plan, so I think total the entire trip is less than $2,000 (a wonderful gift from my in-laws who are also coming with us)

There was just an article in Parenting Magazine about saving money on trips to Disney World. Here are some of their tips:
1. Go to mousesavers.com for deals (and check out cheapflights.com for airline deals).
2. Buy your tickets online in advance (but don't try to go to all of the parks). Rank your priorities online and then go to touringplans.com and use the "best ticket calculator."
3. Go in the off-season (November or early December, or late spring).

You can do Disney as cheap as you want! It is all in when you are going and how you plan your trip. Staying at the Value Resorts is the best option and the newest one the Pop Century is one of the nicest. Would you drive or fly? You can bring your own "snacks" with and pack a small backpack with juiceboxes and snacks so you don't have to keep buying those types of things in the park and you can save money there. The sites other people mentioned are great to look at too to get some ideas.

I usually go on expedia.com for my planning. Also, go on Disneys website and get the park hopper packages. I heard if you stay on Disneys properties(hotels) you get it alittle cheaper. I usually pick a inexpensive motel or hotel because you are not really going to be there to much. But, make sure it comes with a pool. V.
One of my co workers was there last week. There's a promotion this year (check the dates) for a free admission on your birthday, anniversary, or whatever you are celebrating. The coolest thing is that you get immediate fast passes so you wait in line for NOTHING! That alone is worth your weight in gold, especially if you are taking little ones. Have fun!
We just picked up the Unofficical Guide to WDW with Kids. There are a lot of lists in there of discounts before and after you go. I can't remember the authors right now except that it is written by a husband and wife, Bob and Lilian.
Go to hotwire.com. Another cheap way is to be a guest of a timeshare company. However, you'd have to sit through their sales presentation which takes longer than 2 hours.
