Children with PDD-NOS Diagnosis

I was wondering if anyone out there had a child diagnosed with PDD-NOS. Specifically with HFA and ADHD. My son was just diagnosed with this. He is 16 which is considered a late diagnosis. I have tried to find support groups around Chicago but am having a hardtime finding support groups that meet in the evenings or on the weekends since most meet during the day during the week. I wanted to start a support group for parents and was wondering if anyone else out there would be interested in doing this with me.

What can I do next?

You could talk to local therapists in your area as well as local chapters of YMCA programs that cater to older teens with disabilities. There is also meetup.com where you can start a group in your area. A couple other places you could check is hospitals and local church organizations. GL! I hope you can get a support group started or find one!

Check with your school district..... our district has a parent liason that has a lot of resources to help parents. She also helps set up monthly support meeting for different groups.

Good luck!

I have attended a support group for parents with children with sensory issues, and the diagnoses among the group do include PDD-NOS and I don't think the age of the child matters. They meet the first Tuesday of each month in the evening at a restaurant in Oak Park. If sensory issues are one of the things you are dealing with and Oak Park doesn't seem too far to meet, feel free to message me and I will pass on the information.

Hi, my daughter was given this diagnosis a few years back, but she is only six now, so most of the other parents I know are of younger kids. I know there are some groups at meetup.com, that is where I found my support group. Here is one that may interest you, it is for adults and teens. http://www.meetup.com/CASPAN/
For us, the diagnosis, while important(and after some emotional grieving of our own expectations), was really just a great beginning to loving and understanding our daughter for who she is. If you ever want to talk or meet, feel free to message me, I think it is important to have support from people who "get it"!
Luck and love, Jen
