Chiropractor 'Convert'

I know some people swear by them, but I am cynical. Have any of you been a cynic and changed your mind after certain treatments? It feels like the past month my body has decided to revolt against me (back, shoulders and now my TMJ has decided to flare up). Massages are a lovely, lovely, thing, but unfortunately my insurance wouldn't cover them but I think a chiro would be covered.

What can I do next?

Yup, I'm a convert. The chiropractor has been the best thing in the world for my daughter's reflux. And I started going a few months ago and all of my lower and mid back pain is gone.

You'll never know until you try. Just pick someone reputable. And one who has a massage therapist in their office - it's a free massage for the cost of the chiropractor copay!

I had never stepped foot into a chiropractors office, until I was hired to do insurance and billing for one. Actually, I thought chiropractic care was pretty quacky and unsafe. Yeah...no. My chronic rib problems were FINALLY solved after years and years. My foot problem was fixed. I stopped getting headaches, and ear infections. I made my husband go in and get his feet treated, as well. Honestly, it totally changed my life. I go whenever I can, and my son has gone since birth. My husband can't get in often, but will make it when something comes up.

Here is the key: not all chiropractors are created equal. If you are not physically comfortable, you will never get better. You have to be able to relax and be loose. (As loose as you can be, while you have all these physical things going on!!) You might have too look until one is highly recommended, or you really like them. There is a thing that many chiropractors do, where they try to get you coming forever. A GOOD chiropractor will do these 3 things. Treat pain first, repair the problem, and them maintain. If you are very bad off they might want to see you several times over the next few weeks. Once you are to a manageable point, they will tell you to come back every to every other month. (This is the maintenance part.) It's up to you, if you think it's worth it. If you have chronic pains, it almost always will be. A BAD chiropractor will try to put you on a plan hat lasts for months.

Here is what to expect: They might want to take an x-ray. If you are really bad off, they don't want to risk hurting you. If your ailments have reached a certain point, you might need a specialist or physical therapy before they proceed with chiropractic care. A good chiropractor has no problem saying they aren't the right treatment for you. You will most likely be sore after the first or second time. Your body has been all messed up, and your muscles have become accustomed to certain positions and flexes. Soreness, is normal. It's good, actually! Bad pain, is not normal or good. To help with the soreness drink lots of water. More then you normally would. (That will help with any lactic acid.) Take a hot Epsom salt bath, if you are very sore. Try not to take OTC pain meds, as your body needs to create inflammation, in order for it to begin healing.

If you are ever near Flower Mound, I know an AWESOME chiropractor I can recommend.

My husband is an MD, but when I have back pain, I don't even tell him--I just go straight to the chiropractor that he referred me to 2 years ago. Unless you have very severe problems, MDs can't hold a candle to the type of non-pharmaceutical care that a good chiropractor can deliver.

And, a little secret--my chiropractor uses a licensed massage therapist to soften up the tissue before he works on you (depending on your specific issue), so, you might be getting insurance-covered massages too ;-)

I am a chiro convert!

I am a registered nurse, so for most of my life and professional experience I was told they were evil! My first convert story involves my husband. He was born with a birth defect which causes him to occasionally limp which would cause him to throw his back out 1-2 times a year. About 10 years ago, he wanted to golf in this huge tournament and sure enough had thrown his back out. He was the one who first said to me that he didn't want to go to his doc because he would just get prescriptions for pain pills and muscle relaxers and he'd just end up sitting at his desk 'drooling on myself.' He said he was going to try a chiropractor. I told him "Fine, but I won't support it!" He went, got adjusted and acupuncture and was golfing within 3 days! BUT the chiropractor also showed him stretches and exercises to strengthen his back and I promise you, he has not thrown it out since!

I have an old tailbone injury that can be pretty uncomfortable at times. About 5 years ago we had a big trip to Europe planned. But a month before the trip we did a quick trip to Florida. I could barely sit, I was so miserable. My husband asked if I could barely sit 3 hours to Florida, how was I going to make it to Europe? And walk around. I found an amazing chiropractor and told her up front I was skeptical. She did a lot of talking and teaching about the benefits of chiropractic care and I swear the lightbulb went off in my head. She said that she doesn't normally see people so often, but to get me where I needed to be for the trip she would see me 3 times a week for 2 weeks. Again, just like my husband's experience, not only did I feel fine flying to and walking all over Europe, but my old tailbone injury didn't bother me for like 6 months!

I've since done my own reading and research and understand the benefits of chiropractic care and do go in once a month for maintenance. I also do try to get a deep tissue massage about once a month and my massage therapist only works on my back, neck and shoulders. *You may ask where you get your massage if they can ring it up as therapeutic and maybe your insurance will pay for that.

I say try a chiropractor, it will change your world!

Both my husband and I were cynical and made fun of chiropractors - we thought they were quacks. Then both of us (at different times) threw out our backs horribly, could not walk, were in awful pain, etc. We both got amazing relief from the chiropractor. We see someone very very highly recommended. I am a convert now...we both are. When we start feeling out of whack we go and get adjusted. If I wait too long then it feels like my back is going to start having problems again.

Many many years ago I didnt beleive in Chiro care myself. That has all changed. I swear by my Chiro and dont know what I would do without him. Physcial Therapy prescribed by a doctor is not the same as Chiro care what so ever. Ask around a get good referrals.

I have pretty much gone to a chiro on and off most of my life. I go to mine more than my primary dr. I have TMJ as well and they are able to get my jaw back on place without just giving me a bunch of meds for it.

I'm a convert. Anybody who is "against" chiropractic care hasn't been to one (or the right one).

Starting at 12 weeks pregnant I developed horrible low-back and hip pain. It was excruciating, I could barely walk. I couldn't even go to the grocery store. OB said there was nothing that could be done but suggested seeing a chiropractor. Desperate, I went.

O...M...G... I was pain-free within weeks, and have stayed that way. I've had a few relapses but a visit to my chiropractor makes everything better. I'm 31 weeks pregnant now and feeling great.

I used to get chronic headaches and neck pain, and that's gone too. I never take tylenol any more, don't need to. And I kid you not, my eyesight is better.

I highly recommend it. But see a good one who will encourage healthy habits, and not just do an adjustment and send you on your way.

I was always skeptical but I became friendly with a naturopath and massage therapist, who said that her massages wouldn't hold (as great as they felt at the time!) unless we were properly adjusted. Chiropractic can help a lot of things. As always, you need a good one, but that holds true for any practitioner. Advice we were given was that, if you aren't significantly improved about 6 sessions, something's wrong. That doesn't mean totally healed, and it doesn't mean you never need to go back for a periodic "tune up", but you should see substantive changes.

I was advised to go to someone who does applied kinesiology or something very similar. These are not the people who are grabbing your neck and yanking it sharply - which is called "pop and pray" by its critics. (They just pop you and pray that it works!) There are hazards with that - aside from the risks associated with very sharp jolts, in some patients (particularly older people), that sort of treatment can dislodge plaque in the neck arteries and cause a stroke. So go for the gentle manipulation.

Your initial evaluation should include a full history and an x-ray. And there should be coverage by your insurance company - check for a list of preferred providers or ask the chiropractor if he/she takes your insurance. And get referrals from friends or from similar practitioners such as your massage therapist, acupuncturists or holistic health professionals. Your primary care physician may also be able to give a referral.

I swear by my chiropractor. He certainly changes our view of the world on some days for the better!! He makes our bad days better!! I couldn't live without him. Our whole family goes, and just in case you are wondering, no, we are not on some expensive plan where we pay out the nose. Some are like that so don't be scared. It might take you a while to find the perfect one. But I say go for it. You won't be sorry.

My DH had back pain and I said he should call our friend's chiropractor. DH has previously had "normal" treatment with MRIs and steroid injections and whatever. Friend of ours was in horrible pain and 2 days after her adjustment with her chiro, she was dancing at her wedding. So IMO choose carefully but they can be beneficial.

I have back issues since I was a teen had a T-bone accident with my lil Ford a full sized Ram hit me...So I have been going as needed since i'm 32 now. This past summer things really flared up from me being pregnant 4 x's over and not maintaing my overall health including stress so I ended up in the Chrios office in July going now every 3 wks instead of weekly for use of the TENS unit (been RX one for home use) & adjustments including neck. The thing about it is you must relax youtself don't hold in your breath your body tenses up & fails to release and pop when your getting adjusted mine alwasy tells me take a deep breath now blosw out now that i'm routine he still tells me but I know when to do it with the neck he is so gentle he works his fingers where it needs to be then turns my head again to check then I breath in relax breath out while he pops the ggod news is that when your adjusted and all the pops come out then you go back again and there less than before your body is doing good at keeping the adjustment.I feel my best after an adjustment with all the hustle n bustle of being a SAHM to 4 I really needed this for myself again but continued with therapy as I desperatly needed it.I've been told from a pain DR I needed to get steriod injections noway I wwalked out of his office never returned back.I have my good days and nights.
Here is what i've been told to help with the back stop crossing at the knees, cross at the ankles.Lay on your back, the stomach puts too much of an arch casuing back pain true for me since i'm a stomach sleeper, use a n exercise ball to arch and do exercises with so helps to sit on several times a day,& this one came from my PT I have used it and done some exercises with & works wonders Foam Roller it's a huge noodle oh my so getting this,i'll order it tomorrow.I have not had any bad experiences with any chrio i've seen over the yrs. & will continue to seek therapy as I need to

I never had my back go out until I went to the chiropractor. They said that it has to get worse before it gets better. No thank you!

I thought I would try back recently and it was a little better. It did help my back but made my neck really sore. If I ever go back again I will refuse any neck treatments.
