Help! My son has to do a "project" on Christmas in Australia. He is in Preschool and the project can be from a food to an ornament, to coloring the Australian flag. I just don't know what to do. Any ideas would be great. I could make a favorite Australian food, but I can't seem to find any recipes. Maybe a tree ornament? Just need some help! Thanks moms!
There's a cute song about Christmas in Australia called "Six White Boomers" by Rolf Harris. It's about how Santa uses 6 big white kangaroos to get around since the reindeer can't handle the heat and they rescue a baby joey (kangaroo).

Well the only thing that comes to mind is that it's summer in Australia right now. What about an ornament that looks like a surfboard (or sunglasses. santa in a swimsuit, etc.) to represent that?

ADHD runs in my family. Which is only pertinent because we're all a little quirky.My grandfather started a tradition of singing/ humming/ whistling christmas carols in the summertime. It's just sort of stuck.
So I was in the grocery store in the middle of summer this year during a heat wave and didn't even realize I was humming "Silver Bells" under my breath as I shopped. A stranger stopped me and gave me a hug. She knew I was american from listening to me talk, but she was so thrilled to be hearing caroling during the RIGHT time of year. One of the many Aussie transplants in the area.
Why not make a shape of Australia (trace it off something) and then color different things INSIDE the silloutte of Austrailia.....the flag, something that "tells" about something in their Christmas tradition, etc. Since he's in preschool, maybe 3 or 4 things might be enough. He could even cut OUT these things from various sources, too and paste them into Austrailia.
He could laminate and make a placemat. Take it to FedEx Kinkos and they will do.
My Mom's side of the family is first generation Australian (originally from Holland). We ate the same foods and celebrated in the same way as in the US. But yes, it is HOT and summer time. Australia was originally colonized by the English and has contributing immigrant cultures (as well as a deeply rooted and largely mistreated indigenous population).
Basically: hot weather, same European Christmas traditions.
A great Australian food website is taste.com.au - you could look up a recipe for pavlova, that is a typical food eaten in Australia. I'm Australian by the way. Its quite a sweet dessert though.
Just make a tree ornament--get a picture of a koala bear or kangaroo and have your child color it--punch a hole in it and put a hook through it.
How about Australian Christmas Pudding? If you google it I am sure there are a ton of recipes (sorry I don't know where mine is, lol). My friend gave me the recipe years ago. How about something having to do with Cricket?
