Chronic Ear Infections - Anyone Know About Chiropractic Care Vs. Tubes?

I have a 13 month old son who has had 3 ear infections in the last 4 months. Twice his ear drum has ruptured, which tells me he has a high threshold for pain. The last two have been back to back. His ear drum ruptured and was put on steroids and Amoxicillin, 2 days after he finished his meds, he was in urgent care w/a healed ear drum but another double ear infection. So, back on new meds, Omnicef. I hate that he's on all of these meds and want to nip it in the bud sooner than we did with my daughter. My daughter had chronic ear infections for the first year of her life and she ended up with tubes (which was wonderful-no ear infections for 3 1/2 years!). So, my questions is has anyone heard about taking your child to a chiropractor for "adjustments?" A few friends have mentioned this to me and have had a lot of success. I've never been to a chiropractor so I don't have a clue. I'm looking for some advice GOOD or BAD!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone for your suggestions. We went to the Doc today and his ears look good, which I'm SO Happy about!! I asked her opinion on chrio care and she is pretty open and told me to go for it if I'd like. I think we'll wait and see. Hopefully we can be free of infections for a bit! Thanks again. You moms rock.

Chiropractors have been known to work well for ear infections, but you don't want to see a Chiropractor who does manual manipulations on a young child. Find one that uses the "activator method". It's like a little hammer that gently does the manipulating. This also works well with children with sinus problems, sinuses clear within a day or 2.

My children didn't have ear infections, but I also have had several friends who took their children to chiropractors in order to deal with the ear infections, and so far all have found it very successful. The ear infections stopped, no more antibiotics and no surgery. Be aware that some doctors will be highly offended....but who cares? Just take them in occasionally to be sure there is no infection, so that it is documented that there are no infections. The hearing must be protected, and with a high pain tolerance, you have to KNOW it is clear.

Hi S.,

I have brought my 11 mo to the chiropractor a couple of times - Langford Chiropractic in Highland Park (St. Paul). I took her to see if she needed to be adjusted after a difficult birth and I think it helped as her head was kind of squished. On the ear infections side of things, my sister (so this is going back about 20 years) had chronic ear infections and ended up getting tubes put in. The problem was that they didn't fall out by themselves as they were supposed to, so she was going to have another procedure to have them removed, but my mum took her to the chiro who did some little thing to her and they came out that night. I guess I am squeamish about any invasive procedures, and the chiropractor might be worth a try.

Good luck with everything!

My daughter has had ear infections all the time.. We found out it was her adnoids in her face causing a back up of fluids.. She has to get them removed.. Does he breath loud?? Wake up from sleeping for no reason?? If that stuff happens I would have that checked.. Good luck, A.

I don't have first hand experience but my father in law went to one for carpal tunnel syndrom and didn't need to have the surgery after that. (before he went, his primary doc told him he needed surgery) I don't know if that helps at all.

Hi S.! I have a friend who takes her baby to the chiropractor all the time. He got his first adjustment when he was about 7 days old. She swears by it. He's hardly ever sick and hasn't had any ear infections.

I wish I would've known about it when my son was little. He had ear infections constantly - 8 his first 15 months. Amoxicillin doesn't work...nor does Omnicef...so we usually have to have him take Augmentin which is a really strong antibiotic and I hate him having to take all that medicine.

I live in Stevens Point - if you're close by, let me know and I can give you the name of the chiropractor my girlfriend takes her little son to.

I would use the chiropractor first I did with my kids with great results. Also not all ear infections are bacterial some are viral which mean antibiotics dont do anything the body needs to learn how to fight them. Also the doctor wouldn't know if it is bacterial or viral unless they do a swab. They don't want to take the time to do this so alot of dr's just give you the drugs they think you want. Chiropractors also have homeopathic drops that can help with the pain in the ear so that you don't have to use as many drugs. I am not totally agaist drugs but like to use them as little as possible. I don't really have any good suggestions for the ear infections being that neither of my kids have ever had any, but I have heard that going to a chiropractor can help with them. I was working with someone who had it done as a child and she said it worked great, she went for years without any more ear infections, and she too had had a lot of infections prior to that.
Sorry I can't offer any additional advice, but just thought I would share that tidbit with you.

I brought my son to a chiropractor for ear infections and it didn't work. I wish i would have brought him in sooner for tubes and not wasted my money on a chiropractor. The chiropractor did say, that if he had allergies the adjustments might not work. She then suggest holistic med to treat the allergies. We probably spent over $1,000 going to the chiropractor. We spent less on that getting tubes.

With the added issues of the ruptured ear drums, I don't know if chiropractic can be as successful with preventing ear infections. But a thought might be that there is no harm in trying and seeing if it can reduce the number or the seriosness or eliminate them. You will know soon into the treatments and what works for some does not necessarily work for others. If you are open to it, I say try it.
If you want a good recommendation for a chiropractor, let me know. I know several good with children.

Hi S.,
Wow, I felt like I was reading MY story rather than yours -- I've gone thru much of the same with our kids. Our first two daughters had chronic ear infections. With one daughter, we wouldn't even suspect an infection until she would say, "what? I can't hear you." or once when her ear drum burst. Both were on too many bottles of antibiotics to count. One daughter began to deal with stomach problems because of the antibiotics. Eventually they got tubes in which took care of the problem. That is not the end of my story though. Along came our third daughter and the story began to repeat itself. We did try a chiropractor (I love chiropractors) but in this case, it didn't help. We started down the antibiotic road again. I desperately wanted to avoid tubes. Finally, my friend suggested a natural way to treat it at home. After 2 days, she had no sign of an ear infection and didn't have another one for 2 years. Amazing and so much safer and healthier for my baby. This many years later, I couldn't begin to count the number of moms that have tried this same idea with awesome results. Click on my name and send me a message. This is much easier to describe over the phone so somehow I'd love to connect. In the meantime, hang in there. Ear infections are not fun for your child (or for you). -K.

I've been going to a chiropractor since I was 13, and my children go as well. My son has never had an ear infection, and my daughter has only had one, which was when she was 2 months old (before I started taking her to the chiropractor).

Getting your back adjusted is amazing as far as what it can do for your body. It's a perfectly natural way to sleep better, fend off illnesses and just feel better in general. I can't say for sure if it will 'cure' the ear infections, all I can say is that my children have never had them since they've started their chiropractic appointments.

And if nothing else, what's it going to hurt to try?

We had great succes for the first year with my daughter. Although I will admit we did have to put grommets (tubes) in place after this time due to a car accident that ruptured her drums.

Since you have had a simular experiance (drum rupture) grommets may be needed but I would try some chiro care first. Much less invasive

If you are looking for a different and more effective medication for the ear infrections, ask your MD about Zithromax. It is a short course 3 days...and now there is even a 1 time dose that worked GREAT for my son. He also has about 3 ear infections a season (oct-feb). Zithromax is wonderful. My chiropractor swears by chiropractic care to treat the chronics...I haven't tried it yet...was going to see how this year went...he is 2 1/2 and so far we already have 1 ear infection in the bag for this season. One more, and I am going to take him to the chiropractor. I say go for it. They are fairly cheap...cheaper than a visit to the MD with meds anyway. I think the average chiropractic visit around here is $28. Insurance covers most providers also...maybe only $8 of it, but it's better than nothing.
