Climbing Out of Crib - Houston,TX

My just turned 14 month old has started "climbing" out of his crib. We have discovered if we leave him to cry it out to go back to sleep at night, he takes matters in his own hands by essentially vaulting over the side. We do have the crib at its lowest setting but it's not helping. We've caught him bouncing until he gains enough momentum to make it up and over. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I just converted my sons crib to a daybed/toddler bed this week. Here is the original post. The mamas on here gave me some great advice!

Sounds like it's time for a toddler bed. My son started doing the same thing at the same age. When converted big crib to a toddler bed and it's been fine ever since.

toddler mattress on the floor. Make sure the room is super baby-proofed too, like anchoring dressers to the wall so they won't tip over if climbed on. Sounds like you have a rambunctious little one!

good luck.

That's precisely why we put our son in his own bed, at 13 months. We just made sure his room was very safe. We also put a baby gate in his doorway, so he couldn't wander around the house.

Wow! He's going to be a very active little one! :)

Yeah I would get him a toddler bed with rails and make sure his bedroom is super baby-proofed!

Good luck!

Ha, A little Monkey! Sounds exactly like our daughter. Before she was a year, she could get out of her crib so fast, it was amazing to witness.

She could even get out of the crib tent.. she could manipulate the zipper from the inside!

Yes, time to place the mattress on the floor and consider going ahead and moving on to a twin bed. We started with the crib mattress, Then purchased a twin mattress until we decided on the bed.. We were so surprised at having to purchase one so soon.. took us a while to check them all out. We used a gate in her doorway..

My LO started doing this at 17 months old and we switched to a toddler bed then to the floor. My LO prefers to sleep on the cold hard floor, but whatever will help them sleep even for a few hours works for me.

Many people told me 17 months was too early to switch out of a crib, but the crib tents are really expensive.

I would move him to a toddler bed. Be thankful you could wait this long. My youngest started climbing out of his crib at 7 months. No kidding. So we had to put him into a pack and play and worked for about 2 months. At 9 months he was in a toddler bed. He is not a lvl 6 gymnist and at 9 his goal is to go to the olympics. My oldest was about 10 months when he started climbing out of his crib and I put him in my bed till I could get him a toddler bed. I was a single mom at the time and had to save money. But if he is climbing out I would not take the chance of him falling when he loses his balance or footing.

Good luck and God Bless!

They have mesh tents you can attach to crib to keep your son in his crib :)

This may not be the most attractive solution, but when our very energetic little guy started getting out, we just took out the slats in the crib and let the mattress rest on the floor. That little extra distance made all the difference until we were ready to transition to the toddler bed. It did make it a little more difficult for me to get him in and out (I'm pretty short), but it kept him in there and safe :)

Good luck!

No matter what kind of "bed" a child sleeps in, they do get out of it.
Some kids more than others.

My son, LOVED his crib. He was in it until about 3 years old. And he slept SO well in it. One day he started to climb out. I'd tell him it is dangerous and he can get hurt. Well one day he actually fell out onto the carpeted floor below. He cried. He didn't get actually hurt. But once that happened, he never ever, tried to climb out of his crib, again.

You can get a crib tent. We bought one early at 6 months, because our boy would get his hands and feet stuck between the rungs. It zips closed at the top and prevents them from climbing out. We haven't had occassion to zip ours closed as yet, but plan to keep him in the crib till he's too large, or 3, whichever comes first. At 16 months, he can already open doors and baby gates, so the crib is the safest place for him for now.

Good luck to you and yours,

Move to a toddler bed. My son did this at 15 months. They won't stay in a crib forever, you know.

Toddlers can go in toddler beds. Once they hit 24 months or age 2 they need to skip the toddler bed and go to a big kids bed. It's the perfect time to switch them. It will take some time with one of you going in and making sure they are laying down, rubbing their back, etc...getting them to go back to sleep is essential. They will eventually start sleeping through the night again but they need to switch beds now. Before they get to old and realize they can wander and go play. The earlier the better.

You could try a crib tent. We did that for a while with one of the kids.

With our last we just moved him to a toddler bed. He loves it!

Two words....crib tent! He won't like it at first but he will quickly adjust to the idea and then start feeling secure behind his little tent. That is much too young to have such freedom in the middle of the night! :)
