Clomid Alone or Clomid with IUI

My husband and I have been trying to conceive since June 2008 after having an ectopic pregnancy in March 2008. We have had no luck even with 3 cycles of accupuncture. Our next step was to go on the Clomid for 5 days to make ovulation quicker for us to conceive along with IUI. I start my Clomid meds tomorrow, but my husband and I have been going back and forth whether or not to try naturally just with Clomid by itself and see what happens or take Clomid along with IUI to increase our chances of conceiving. What do others think that have been in this situation before? Does Clomid work by itself without IUI or do we really need Clomid with the IUI procedure for us to conceive?

So What Happened?

HI Ladies-
I just wanted to say Thank You sooo much for all of your great stories and responses. They were all very helpful and made my decision on trying Clomid by itself for one cycle before going onto IUI. This is what my hubby said all along, but I needed to hear it from others too before making an important decision. Thanks again for all of your responses:-)

Hi,
My husband and I had been trying for over 1.5 yrs to get pregnant when my new ob gyn found out i have pcos. we tried clomid and it worked the first time around. i have twins that are 3. the second time we tried for a yr and then i went to a reproductive endocrinologist who was vrey thorough about everything. tried clomid again and it worked. the dr (2nd time) was much more thorough then the regular ob gyn. (he took samples of my mucus when i was ovulating, he said it was very thick so if it didnt work the first time he would go with clomid with iui to not have to deal with that problem). good luck

Well...I used Clomid alone and it worked. I had to take two courses, though -- the first dosage wasn't enough to get me to ovulate, but the second round worked when I took a stronger dose of Clomid. It may make you feel weird, though -- I remember being dizzy and having an upset stomach when I was on it. But we have a 10 1/2 year old son, so it clearly worked!!! I think you can probably try it alone this time, and if that doesn't work, try it again with the IUI.

Hi K.!

My husband and I were trying to conceive for about 1.5 years before my doc recommended Clomid. I did one month of clomid alone and then two months of clomid/IUI we got pregnant the second time. I had a history of cancer and intense chemotherapy and was told that I would never be able to get pregnant, so we were beyond excited when Clomid/IUI was "all it took." Our daughter will be four in August. And as an FYI....we got pregnant on our own and very unexpectedly with our second child when our daughter was 13 months old!!!! Our son just turned two!!!

Give it a month with just clomid if that is what your gut says!!! Good Luck!

K.,
I went through what you are going through and my doctors figured out that a)my hormone levels, mainly progesterone, were out of whack, and b)my body rejected the synthetic hormones. My infertility doctor put me on micronized progesterone that she had specifically compounded for me and I got pregnant within a month without any other fertility treatments what so ever. I can give you the name of the doctor that helped me if you want. She does consults with patients and doctors. I owe her a lot, had it not been for her I would not have my 2 youngest boys.
Hugs,
T.

Hi K.,
This isn't going to be very helpful. I actually read your story and wanted to let you know you are not alone. My husband and I have a 5 year old daughter who we concieved naturally. We have been trying for over a year now to concieve our 2nd and no luck. My next step is the same as yours so please let me know what you decide. Im curious to hear how it goes for you guys.
Good luck and stay positive.

I personally have never had to go this route. My husband and I were very lucky when it came to getting pregnant. However, I think that since you have been trying to conceive for a year now, I would try and give myself as many chances as possible. If taking both is going to increase your chances I would do that. I know women who had difficulty and it was very hard for them. And every month it was so hard on them to get their periods. I'd use every option given to me every month.

I used clomid alone to concieve both my children and was successful both times, on the first try. I'm pretty sure you can use clomid for 3 cycles before you have to take a break. I suggest trying on your own the first month and if that doesn't work try IUI.

Hi, K.. I would suggest Clomid alone to see what happens, especially if you're already doing acupuncture. My husband and I tried for a year and a half to get pregnant. We finally conceived through a combination of acupuncture and Clomid. The acupuncture helped to regulate my cycles and the Clomid helped with ovulation. I started acupuncture in November; took Clomid for five days in the beginning of April, and by the end of April, I learned I was pregnant. I continued with weekly acupuncture treatments, which helped to alleviate morning sickness and other aches and pains. Hope this helped and good luck!

Hi K.,

What does your Doctor recommend? Yor chances of conceiving are greater with the IUI. Your age and how eager you are to conceive, will help you determine your choice. My doctor immediatelt recommended IUI w/Clomid. Like you, I was initially hesitant to go right away to IUI.

Good Luck,

W.

Hi K.! I know exactly what you are going thru. We tried conceiving for almost 5 years. I tried MANY cycles of just Clomid alone, to no avail. For some miracle, when we tried the Clomid with the IUI it worked on the first try!! I'm not saying it will work for you on the first try, but it definietly boosts your chances of conceiving. Good Luck to you!
PS - My daughter will be 4 years old on July 14th!
