We decided to use cloth diapers. This will be our 3rd kid. We decided to use because cheaper in the long run and trying to be more green. Like to know your favorite brand or type. What works and don't. Any info will be great. Thanks.
I do home daycare and one of the kids I had used cloth, bum genius. http://www.amazon.com/bumGenius-One-Size-Cloth-Diaper-But... I liked them because they had a removeable insert to absorb the mess and also had a plastic coating inside the peices of cloth to catch anything the liner didn't. they had snaps on the front to adjust the size so they grew with him and the velcro straps for the waist.

I used the Fuzzi Bunz One Size with my son and LOVED them!! They are an all-in-one, and adjust to fit newborn thru 3 year old (potty training). I ordered mine online from www.nopins4baby.com - they are GREAT about answering all of your questions. (I had quite a few before I placed my first order.)
The one thing that sold me on these above all others is the fact that they adjust from birth on - one set is all you will ever need!

The Thirsties covers work really well. If you sew you can also make them for cheaper than buying them. I have been sewing some for my son and like them even more than others I have bought. I found that nice fitting covers worked well with a prefold just laid in it. This worked for the newborn stage. Now that he is getting bigger he needs a fitted diaper or pocket diaper.

We have cloth diapered our son since he was about 6 mo...wish we would have got on board before then! Both my husband and I work so a diaper that my husband was comfortable with but also that my sons teacher would use was important. We use primarily bum genius and tiny tush. Have tried swaddlebees and personally didn't have much luck. Used the fuzzi bunz but as he grew and wet more it didn't seem to fit as well. Let me know if you are in the KC or StL area, there are good stores in both areas and I'd be glad to pass the info on.

Hi S.,
We use the bumgenius ones that we got from cottonbabies.com and they work pretty well. I got them when my oldest was probably 1.5 but have used them thru my second and they're holding up well. I will mention that the first few weeks after my youngest was born, the diapers were too big, so we just bought disposables for that timeframe. Also, my son pees a ton at night now (16 mos), so I use a disposable at night. I'm guessing we have 18 diapers and that's sufficient. With most cloth diapers, you'll need a laundry detergent without dyes, frangrances, etc....so you may want to keep that in mind too...we use planet ultra.
FYI...I was just looking at that cottonbabies website and they have some cloth diapers on sale for black Friday.
Good luck,
R.

Bum genius organic AIO, all in ones. They are made with velcro or snaps. No covers, that's why called all in ones. Go to www.cottonbabies.com or to the cotton babies store, if you live in St. Louis. The store carries several brands and you can touch and feel the diapers. Buying diapers on line is difficult. I used cloth with my daughter for all 3 years and am using the same diapers with my son. The initial start up cost is about $600, but that's what you would spend in a year, on disposable. And if you keep them in good condition, you can resale them to cotton babies or on craigslist.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hi S., and good for you! My husband and I did exactly what Rachel did and I agree completely. We tried about 6 brands and loved BumGenius of all of them. CottonBabies in STL is great and they often sell re-sale diapers at a nice discount. You can find them online as well. We went with the one-size, pocket diaper so they would last through to diaper training. She's 17 months now and we're just hitting the fully extended setting. She's skinny, so she has PLENTY of room to grow still.
She started heavy wetting after a year or so, so I bought some hemp liners that are great! They are thinner than the infant liners you stuff the BumGenius pockets with and I think they absorb more too. I think we bought about 20 of them over the course of a few months and that works nicely. We also use disposables at night to avoid leaks and waking.
I love the laundry drops--gentle for baby brand detergent, but we used the soda they sell at cottonbabies for awhile and it was okay.
If you really want to save money and energy, you can hang your diapers on the line to dry. I've done it a couple times and it bleaches out stains nicely. It also has the bonus effect of killing germs, if you have the time. ;)
Best of luck!
M.

I just started cloth diapering my 7-month old. I ordered 5 diapers to start off with just to see if I like it (1 Fuzzi Bunz one size diaper, 2 Fuzzi Bunz perfect size diapers, and 2 bumGenius one size diapers). I LOVE cloth diapering so I have ordered more diapers and all of the supplies that go with them so I can do it full time! I really like the way the Fuzzi Bunz fit and how soft they are, but I have had issues with those leaking if I don't change her quickly enough. I haven't had any issues with the bumGenius diapers leaking, but I could see where the velcro would wear out. I've been putting her down for naps and nighttime in the bumGenius (with 2 inserts at night), and then using the Fuzzi Bunz during the day. I just love using cloth diapers! Who knew!! We were out of town for Thanksgiving so I used disposables on our trip and I couldn't wait to get home and get her back into her cloth diapies!! Good luck! Let us know which diapers you choose and which ones you like. Oh, and I bought mine online at www.kellyscloset.com.

For more than two years, I have used Crickett's Diapers hemp/cotton diapers. There are only two sizes. We used flushable liners to make poop cleanup easier. We have waterproof covers to use when out and about, and I use wool covers while we are at home. I love to talk cloth diapers, so if you want more information or even want to come over and look at our 'system,' let me know. My email address is ____@____.com previous poster mentioned smell. That is probably just due to too much and/or improper detergent. Detergent plays a big role since the diapers are washed so much.

I've used the bum genius mixed with my share of disposables. We usually use the cloth at night and in the morning since my daughter usually poops in the afternoon, so it makes my life cleaning diapers a little easier. I do take disposables when we go out because it's easier to toss a dirty diaper than carry a stinky one around. Bum genius is great, though!

as a daycare provider, I do not allow cloth diapers. I have had children with them, & applauded when the parents switched to disposables. Until then, I bit my tongue! It's a.o.k. for home, but truly an inconvenience elsewhere.
One of my moms actually made her own! She said that after awhile the diapers lose their efficacy & leak no matter what. She found that replacing the store-bought ones was cost-prohibitive.
On another subject, the odor involved was challenging. After a couple of months, no matter how they were cleaned - there was always a distinctive (unattractive) odor to the diapers. Yuck!
& one more comment: one family actually had developmental issues with hip joint/leg muscle/stance in both of their sons....be very careful in chosing diapers which are thick in nature - it causes the child to walk differently because of that additional bulk. Once the boys were switched over to disposables, their gait straightened out! Hooray!
I am not questioning your choice. I am simply sharing my experiences with you. Peace!

i loved my cloth diapers, i used a diaper service in the end. my only advice is not to buy too much before you try them. I had a few of 2 different at home brands to use once my diaper service shower gift was gone. My son had an allergic reaction to both, I have no idea what it could be other than what's the the elastic. So I tried just he cloth squares and rubber pants over them, that worked much better, but I had to get the cloth/rubber pants from the diaper service because the ones I found at target/walmart he had a rash to as well. The diaper service sold them to me for a reasonable price too. Good luck!! PS my son potty trained himself at 18m, they say it happens quicker, he's my only one, so it may have been luck, but he started trying to play with the buttons on your pants, so one time we took him potty and he went, that continued to be our method until just after 2 when he could verbally communicate his desires quickly enough for us!!
