Cloth Menstral Pads

I am 35-weeks pregnant, and experiencing some leakage, so my doctor recommended that I start wearing menstral pads to prevent any accidents. In our family, we cloth diaper, and although I've always used standard ALWAYS brand maxipads but I hate the idea of wearing pads day-in and day-out and creating so much waste, especially when most of them won't even be soiled before I have to throw them out! So I've been looking into cloth menstral pads, but just like with cloth diapers, there are lots of options. Even FuzziBunz makes one! Is anyone who has used cloth menstral pads able to recommend a brand? I would like something that I will be able to use for my regular cycle once the baby comes, and I have a pretty heavy flow. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your responses! After reading everyone's responses, I ended up buying FuzziBunz brand, Imse Vimse brand, and Happy Heinies brand to try to decide between them. I chose these three brands because they were the least expensive, each brand was 3 for under $18 (for the set, not each). The results have been that I prefer FuzziBunz very much over the others! HH are very nice, but as was commented, they do bunch up. I can probably fix them by putting a couple of stitches in on each side (and I will!) but buying a bunch and then having to "fix" them doesn't appeal to me. The Imse Vimse are my least favorite for 2 reasons: 1, they do not have a waterproof cover, and so if you let them get soaked, I would worry that they soak through (although I haven't had this problem yet). Second, when I, ehem, pull down my pants, the pads have a tendency to flip! If there was blood on them, I would worry that the blood would get all over my leg and pants. I wouldn't want to spend more money than $18 for 3, so I doubt I'll buy any more expensive brands, but so far, I'm very satisfied with what I've got! Thank you again!

Happy Heiny makes them too. I haven't used them for menstrual flow but use them for "this is my 4th pregnancy and my bladder ain't what it used to be" stuff. I like the HH - they are fleece on top and have a hemp liner (hemp is very absorbent). You could also look into a Diva cup or other menstrual cup; I have used that and have been very happy. One thing about the HH: the hemp used to get bunched and you would have to "flip" it when it was just dried to get to flat, but the company said they added extra stitching to fix that. You may want to ask the seller if the ones you get have extra stitching.

I'm planning on making my own, so if you're handy with the sewing machine you can save money as well!

Otherwise I recommend Party In My Pants. They are just so expensive ($11.99 per pad!) that if you're planning on continuing to use them then making your own (or buying some from someone on etsy) is a good option.

What a great question! I have always wanted to switch to cloth pads since I have a heavy flow and go through maybe 20 pads per cycle x 12 months! We used cloth on both of my sons and I am thrilled that we did it...for environmental reasons and then there was the money savings.

I don't have any recommendations for you but I am eager to see the responses. I would love to try a cloth pad.

I did find this link that looks interesting though.

I've used GladRags for about 10 years. I love them! No irritation or other problems. They come in organic or regular flannel w/ terry liners, in solids, prints or natural/unbleached. I started with just the regular day pads, but used the overnight (heavier flow) pads following the birth of each of my children. The pads have a cover with a "liner" that you can insert. The covers hold more than one liner so you can adjust for your flow. Now, they make pantiliners as well. Easy to wash, use, carry, etc. www.GladRags.com

I have a friend who swears by the aforementioned DivaCup, and I'm planning to get one myself. They also make one that is latex-free (silicone, I think) in case you have a latex allergy/sensitivity. (same website)

Congratulations on your decision, and good luck in finding the product that works best for you!

I did use some "off" brands that some made off of Ebay once I really liked them but I still was having an itch issue (rash) so I ended up using a Diva Cup and never looked back. I suppose it wouldn't be something for you to use now but maybe consider after the baby is born. I'm telling you that it's the best and I will NEVER use anything else. I kind of surprised myself because I didn't even like using tampons. Even got my best friend to use one and she loves it as well. It takes some practice and few cycles to get the hang of it but it's well worth the effort. You save money, waste and no more messy pads.
By the way, congratulations :)

I never used them but if that were me I would go buy some dish rags and wear those for 5 weeks..you can wash and re-wear them. Then toss them out after the baby is born.
