We had similar Christmases when we were little b/c my dad had Leukemia. We always focused on the other side of Christmas and not so much on the gifts. We made cookies and went caroling to our neighbors or nursing homes. It was very humbling seeing how little we had, and then meeting others with less. Your 10 year old could learn a lot from these experiances, they truly bond families closer together. For help with food, look at the post I did earlier about "being poor... and a little pick me up". It will truly help you. Currently, my husband and I get one small gift for each other and about 2 for our son. He is only 10 months, but your kids understanding may surprise you. God Bless
