A co-worker in her 20s was just diagnosed with a brain tumor. She will find out on in the next week if it malignant. She has mentioned that she likes to read self-help books and we would like to buy her some to help her through this terrible time. Have you or someone you know gone through this experience? What books would you recommend?

What can I do next?

A.: I am listening to a book on tape,
Of Monkeys & Dragons- Audiobook
Michele O’Donnell reveals principles of healing in “Of Monkeys and Dragons: Freedom from the Tyranny of Disease”. I have been involved in much personal and spiritual growth work and I think I can say that Michelle's work is close to the most powerful work I have EVER experienced. This could save her life! I am a cancer survivor for five and a half years. Best, Peg

Hi A.,

That's really nice of you to want to do this for your co-worker. My mother had a brain tumor about 6-years ago that was in a not so great place in her head but it was benign and they were able to treat it, and she recovered from the procedure just fine. It did make her pretty goofy for a while which, knowing what was causing it, wasn't a big concern for us and we were all able to sit back and enjoy our more exuberant, less inhibited mother while it lasted before she fully recovered and was once again back to her old straight-laced self.

Anyway, here's some books that I've enjoyed reading over the years that maybe she will enjoy as well:

Your Erroneous Zones by Dr. Wayne Dyer

You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay

You Can Do It! The Merit Badge Handbook for Grown-Up Girls by Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas

I wish you co-worker a fast and uneventful recovery.

Hi A.,

I agree with Laurie about Louise Hay's YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE or any of her other books. They are affirmation based and bring about the power of positive thinking.

Good Luck to your friend. I pray that she recovers.

Hi A.,
No books to recommend, but my Grandmother had a brain tumor which they were not able to treat due to her age. Just know that with my grandmother, she functioned to about her last 15 days with her usual chores. She never complained, but sometimes would hold the back of the head (where the tumor was). I would ask if she was in pain and she would only say there was only pressure, no pain. I was never sure if she was just being strong about it, or if that is all she felt...I never saw a tear fall, so perhaps it didn't hurt, as it did not debilitate her.
