Instead of buying pantaloons, consider using Lanacaine anti-chafing gel. or use a glide stick (runners use them). Both will resolve the chafing. Why undermine the cool feeling of a sundress by wearing long shorts underneath.
Does anyone have a solution to this issue? I am not thin...a 12/14...and not long legged...about 5'4.
I like to wear simple knit sundresses when its really hot out for running errands and such for the ease and comfort factors. But even when I was younger and a size 2/4 I had and hated that thigh rubbing thing and chafing factor. Am I just built funny or does everyone deal with this??? For me its mostly just a bit uncomfortable if I am walking about all day in the heat (say at a festival, etc) but for my plus size daughter she does get the more serious chafing discomfort.
I do not want "shapewear" as I do not want something tight and restrictive. I just want something comfortable with an appropriate height waistband, and legs that are long enough to truly not roll up, not bind and squeeze, etc. Why is this so hard?
I have found a few possible solutions online, but most are spendy-ish, and none are something I can go to a store and try on or at least hold and SEE. What I am picturing is a nice cotton women's boxer with maybe a little % of something stretchy to keep its shape, at least a 4 inch inseam, but as much as 6 to prevent roll up. Why can't Hanes or FOL or other easily purchased brands make these?? Argh!
So what does anyone else do? Does anyone have a proven recommendation?

I wore dresses to school every day from Kindergarten thru 12th grade. Biker shorts are the best way to go.
I usually just wear biker shorts or something similar. I've been working out and trying to get in shape, but I'm also just shy 5'4 and around a 10 now (was a 12) and this is what I've been doing. Good luck! (And if you find something better, I'd love to hear about it!)
Bikers knit shorts.
They are like knit stretch leggings cut at the knee.
Used to love them for running. Work great under a dress.
They are comfy as well. They are not shape wear.
You should be able to find them at a Target type of store in the exercise-wear dept.
Hmmm ... they make them for men. They are like bun-huggers w/ legs. I think Hanes and Calvin Klein makes them; I've seen them at Target. Probably not the most feminine of garments, but they might do the trick. Have you tried to powder your thighs?
Some of the dresses are so short now, that our daughter and her friends wear bike shorts under them. This also helps with the chafing.. Especially since it gets so hot here.
Walking from the parking Garage to work.. is a nightmare.
I am certain that I saw boxer briefs for women the last time I was at Target. Would that work?
Buy some stretchy Lycra/Spandex bike shorts. They have narrow legs that will not roll or slide up. They are slick so they work like a slip under dresses, they won't bind up the fabrics either, the dress will slide over the surface of the shorts and not stick to them. They are made to breathe so they are cooler.
This is what I do, I wear a lot of dresses, broomstick skirts that are very loose and flowy, and I have large thighs that will get to the point of getting heat rash and blistering if I don't wear something on my thighs.
I think that they are not uncomfortable since they are stretchy and they don't stick to the other fabrics. Some shorts will say they are like this but may be cotton knit instead, or they have legs that are not narrow enough. Go to a sporting goods store and try some on. If you get a bigger size so what, if they are comfortable it does not matter what the tag says.
Try mens boxer briefs. They should fit your material, length, comfort and price requirements.
I don't know of any recommended shorts or underwears...but try rubbing some baby oil on the inside of your thighs. Not just after they're chaffed, but even before.
I have the same problem sometimes during summers, and rubbing some baby oil helps preventing them a lot, for me..!
I have the exact problem. I looked all last summer for a solution cause, I too love sundresses but could wear them without majorly raw inner thighs. I ended up buying a pair of bicycle type stretch shorts. Not the shiny material but just plain cotton. Also, the stretch capri length could be an option too. And it looks just as cute! I know a lot of the junior stores/dept of stores will have something like this.
At Macy's they have shape wear with different holds. Fat free dressing shorts are great in moderate low hold. They are comfortable use a Macy coupon also for swimming or if u don't want to wear shorts Glide (looks like a deoderant.. About 10 dollars I used it in a triathlon once.. I carry it in my purse for hot days at beach or lots of walking.. Sold at sports stores. I even use it on my 9 year old so her legs don rub while on the beach. Get glide it is amazing to stop chafing :)
Thsi site can be pretty pricey, but barenecessities.com might have what you want. Once you see them, maybe you'll know better what to look for elsewhere.
Being a fat bloater living in Texas, I can sympathize. I use Monkey butt powder on my thighs, applied a couple of times a day, it stops the chafing.
I wear shorts under my dresses. (It also saves embarrasment on windy days!)
There's a product by Monistat called Soothing Care - somes in a smallish tube and it works WONDERS! Even once you've got the little (or big) rash going -- you put on a very small amount any place skin rubs against skin (or against clothing in an uncomfortable way) and that's the end of the pain!! On days I'm out ALL day and night I've had to use it maybe 2 or 3 times at most -- otherwise once is enough! I think I got it at Walgreens in the feminine aisle -- one tube lasts a couple years at least!!

I wear short legged leggings or biker shorts for this reason. I have worn 14 up to 28 (current) and my legs have ALWAYS done this, a huge reason why I hardly wore dresses or skirts.
What about a a small size in men's boxer briefs? Or, you could get cotton shorts.
Try men's boxer shorts over your own panties. I know, not what you're going for, but they would probably work.
Otherwise, try some cotton/lycra/spandex workout shorts that hit just above the knee or sometimes a bit higher. When we do Civil War Reenacting, this is what we wear underneath our period costumes. That way we're comfortable, and when we're done at the end of the day, we already have "clothes" on we can wear in public/camp.
Cornstarch works wonders on chafed inner thighs. It's what we use after CW camping/my husband is done riding horse all weekend in the hot summer months.
