Communion Gift Ideas

My husband's goddaughters(age 3 and 4 months) are being baptized this weekend, and I'm curious what might be considered a proper gift for this type of event. The parents are great friends of ours (the dads grew up together), and although I really like the mom we haven't had the opportunity to get to know each other really well due to distance (we live in different states). I believe they are holding this event in a catholic church, but am not sure if they are active in the church or if this is a one time event- does it even matter? As you can see I'm at a loss, and although I can appreciate a gift that marks the occasion (silver cross pendant, etc.) I believe the grandparents will probably have that covered. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

Communion and Baptism are two different things. Based on their age, they're getting Baptized. I like the ideas of frames (you can find them with crosses on them online or at religious stores) or savings bonds.

There is a baptism cup, it's silver and you put the childs name on it. We have one for each child from their god parent. Or we also got a precious moments baptism figurine. Hope this helps!

I received a beautiful photo album that was engraved from personalizationmall.com. and a childrens bible...but honestly I did not expect gifts...I received cards and that was enough.

In the past I've given savings bonds as christening gifts or something personalized, like a frame or jewelry box, from Things Remembered. You could also give a religious medal or other keepsake bearing the name of the saint the child was named after, if that applies. A child's bible or prayer book or even cross to hang in their room would also be appropriate. Since your hubby is the godfather it would be nice to give them something extra special :)

It doesn't matter if it's a one-time visit. Having a child Baptised is a very big deal for Christians and if the invite was for a Baptism, not a Christening, then you are likely attending a Catholic sacrament.

For religious occassions, jewelry and money are traditional gifts. If the grandparents are intending on purchasing jewelry, then a card with $$ to start their savings account is pretty standard. We are the godparents to my twin nieces and gave them each a jewelry box and $100 at their Baptism.

Go to a religious gift shop and you'll find all sorts of appropriate gifts.

Hello, How about a children's Bible for each of them. You or your husband could write a message to each of them. I would go with one for each. You could also give them a little stuffed animal (maybe a lamb) with it or a cross pendant.
Good luck.

I am Catholic and when my boys were baptized here were some of my favorites!

Cross for their bedroom wall
$ for their bank account
Rosary
Baptism picture frame

We bought my niece a Bible and had her name put on the cover in gold. We bought a dear friend of ours a photo frame (it had a religious theme). If you can look up a religious book store near you, you can go in there and find all kinds of bracelets, necklaces and such designed juast for such occasions.

You could also go with something age appropriate that's pretty much just for fun. Veggie Tales videos are just delightful, whether or not they're deeply religious.

We like to give a James Avery Charm. They are sterling silver and as the child grows, we continue to give her a charm for each birthday.

I agree that I didn't expect gifts from our family and friends, except for the traditional gift of a cross from the Godparents, but I'd go with money if you'd like to do something. We did get a cross that was really cute for my daughter's room, but I usually don't like things like that, but my SIL knew me well enough to get a cute one. That is an option too, if you feel comfortable getting something that the parents will like too.
