My son has recently shown a huge interest in using the computer. He really wants to learn how to use it. He will be 4 in May. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on computer games or other software that I may be able to use to help teach him. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

Thanks

There are a few websites that have games children can play. My nephew like the thomas the train site. And my son goes to playhousedisney.com to see his fav characters and play games with them. Or there is noggin.com. All of which are pretty educational and fun for the little ones to explore.

Hi my name is E., I have a son who will be 3 in March who loves to play on the computer. We started letting him play on it about 2-3 months ago. We go to PBS.org and there are a lot of activities on there from shapes to numbers to coloring and painting with all the pbs cartoon characters. He absolutley loves it and he is learning a lot. There are also websites from all the cartoon channels that have games on there, I have never been to any of them but I am sure they are good for kids begining to play and learn on the computer. As far as teaching your son to use the computer he will probably pick it up pretty easily. We didn't teach our son how to use the mouse or anything he just got on the computer one day and said he knew how to use it and he did. He can't get to the website by himself yet, but he has an idea how to. Also once we get him to the website he knows what to do from there, he can switch games if he gets bored to painting or coloring or he can print off coloring sheets to "really" color. I am sure your son probably already knows how to use the computer somewhat especially the mouse and thats all they really need to be able to use for games and such.

Hi, my daughter is 4 and very into computer games. She's been into them since she was 3. I actually was at TJ Maxx and saw that they had a Blues Clues Preschool game for the computer for $5. I picked it up and my daughter and I did it together when we got home. I showed her how to use the mouse and it just took her that one time before she was doing it by herself. Since then, I've bought her other Preschool games at TJ Maxx and she loves them all. She could play on the computer all day if I let her. My daughter is a quick learner and it sounds like your son is like that also. My daughter has Blues Clues, Mickey Mouse and Whinnie the Poo games. Just look for ones that say Preschool on them. Also, here is a sight that my daughters Preschool teacher sent us for her to practice with... www.starfall.com My daughter is in preschool now and they do computers once a week. This is a program that her computer teacher sent to me for her to use. She loves it too!

Hope this helps!

My daughter just turned 5 yesterday and has been reading pretty well for a while. I'm convinced it's partly from her computer games--starfall.com is great. Also, the Living Books of Dr. Suess books, like Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and ham. There are a couple of websites where you can get great cheap software, too. One is planet cd rom (I don't have the exact address, try a google search) and the other is where it's 2.97 per title, and I think even free shipping! That one I got from a flyer in one of those coupon mailer packs. We liked the Blues Clues reading activity ones, the Caillou and Curious George, and of course the girly titles that your son probably won't appreciate!

Well if your son is like mine, he will learn plenty from just watching you. Jumpstart has a wonderful program for preschool age. My oldest son is also 4 and if I want to get technical things done I have to send him to the other room because he will then try it out himself. I caught him trying to put a password on my computer, so I put one on myself so I could access the silly thing. He also loves to play typing on the word processor program. Just keep a close eye on him. My son also likes to play online at Nick Jr, Noggin, Big Idea, and Disney. He loves the computer, but watch out for the little guy.

I don't know if they still carry it, but I got a set of games from costco for my little girl (who just turned four in January). It has a Wiggles game, a Jay Jay the Jet Plane Game, a Bob the Builder Game, and a Crayola Coloring game. They are good for learning and for helping a toddler manuever the computer.

Hi S.,

I have a girl, Ella, who will be 4 in May as well. She like the computer too. Try the crayola website www.crayola.com and they have a thing call digicolor. (link on the left)...she plays that and loves it. I have also tried the Nick Jnr site, but if you google Nick Jnr UK, you will find the UK version has more age appropriate games that do not frustrate them. Hope this helps. Let me know what other suggestions you get, as I am on the look out too.

My son is also 4 and he is a computer whiz (at least where his games are concerned). Bionicle (from legos) has its own website. My husband found a website of free online games. You should try a yahoo search for "free online games". My son found the Nick Jr. Arcade a lot of fun- you have to pay for this one but they will give you a free trial. Check out playhousedisney.com or nickjr.com
If you ever want to get our boys together let me know.

My 3 year-old loves the games on noggin.com (try the miffy, maisy and play with me sesame games) and pbskids.org (dragon tales has some good ones). However, her favorite games are on the fisher-price.com website. Just click on "fun and family time" and then on "fun & games online!". They have really good ones for learning letters, shapes as well as some good online coloring. Plus all these games are free and you don't have to download anything! Have fun!

My son is two and we allow him 30min. a day on the computer I was amazed at how quickly he learned how to work the computer he has somes games geared toward his age. He has learned a lot through working on the computer such as his alphabet and some of his phonics. He has also learned how to type small words. I think this is good for him and it gives me time to catch up on chores. You'll be amazed how quickly he can pick it up. My son knows how to turn on the computer put in his game and then click into the program it still amazes me.

Yeah, you can get him a preschool cd-rom so he can start learning if he won't be going to preschool and you have to teach him at home. On other days, he can play a boy's game that's good for his age. Haven't researched it much since I have a 4 year old girl. Learning is so much fun for them at this age. Take care.
