Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Hi all on Sunday evening we noticed my son's eye was watering excessively, pink, puffy, constantly rubbing it and yes it appears to us, his parents, that he has conjunctivitis. I of course have kept him home from school. Yesterday morning he woke up with a horribly goopy eye that was crusted over and yes no worries I kept up on keeping it as clean as possible all day. After I initially cleaned it out in the morning he even left it alone. This morning he has a bit of goop in his eye but nowhere near the amount he had yesterday. I didn't know that could happen I actually expected it to be the same or worse today. He's been leaving his eye alone all day so far but his eye still does not appear quite right. I can finally get him into the doctor tomorrow. I've washed all of his sheets and pillows, cleaned all toys and sanitized the house from top to bottom yesterday. I'm working on doing it all again today and thankfully my son has kept to either his room or the dining room so less to do. I'm trying to limit the spread of whatever is causing his issue be it viral, bacterial or something unknown.

Question, for those of you who've dealt with this before do you have any recommendations on things I should be doing to help the situation?

What can I do next?

It does not necessarily mean he had pink eye. He could have had an eyelash in his eye that was irritating it. Or something else. I have very dry eyes and about once a month I get all red, swollen, and have goo running out of the corners of my eye. I do not have pink eye, I have a dry eye that got debris in it and it could not wash it out. When my eyes are like this I might take 4 showers a day and each time wash my hair and face very well. I can react to dust, dog or cat dander, perfume if I get close enough to it, make up flakes, sand, just plain old stuff in the air too like pollen or even poison ivy. It doesn't have to be pink eye just because he had a reaction, it could be a lot of other things too.

I suggest that next time you take him to the doc and get him looked at. The ointment for pink eye can really make the eye irritation feel so much better instantly. If it's a reaction or something in the eye itself the doc can see that and perhaps remove it sooner.

Wash compulsively.

Use a washcloth to make a hot compress and have him hold it on his eye for ten minutes every hour or two. Use the wet cloth to carefully remove debris after the ten minutes is up.

It's most likely a bacterial infection (very contagious) that will clear up in about 3-4 days. Be there with a hot compress when he wakes to hold onto the crusted eye and loosen the hard bits so he doesn't rub them into his eye. It's likely that he'll infect the other eye....treat it the same way as the first. Wash, wash, wash, and use lots of hot compresses. DO NOT REUSE the washcloth. Wash it HOT when you do laundry and dry hot as well.

Good luck.

Wash hands frequently and make sure he doesn't touch it. Use a clean washclothe and cleanse it----Not sure if you breastfeed or not, but breastmilk has lots of healing properties to it and can help clear it up. I have used it before and it works well.

My son had Conjunctivitis, diagnosed by the Pediatrician.
It is contagious... it can go to the other eye too etc.
My son had to use an eye drop prescription for 10 days.
It can be stubborn to go away.
Meanwhile, I kept him home from school for a couple of days until it eased up. Schools, will also send a kid to the Health Room if the child is sent to school with it. And send them home.

Just take your child, to the Doctor.
Guessing won't help.

Kids, have a hard time keeping their hands away from their eye. My son's eye was really itching and irritated and he was rubbing it a lot etc.

He can only spread it by touching his eye and then touching something else. So, make sure he's keeping his hands off. It may be beneficial to patch his eye until it gets better if he's having a hard time with hands off.

You sounds like you have a good handle on things.... clean, clean and then clean more! (ugh, right?!) If you are well-established with your doctor, you could probably just speak with the nurse on the phone, explain what's going on and the office will go ahead & phone in a prescription for drops. That's what my doctor will do for things like Pink Eye... Saves the time, trouble, money of a visit to the office.

If they eye starts to really bother him, keep a good supply of clean cloths and soak them in a nice warm (nearly hot) water and have him hold it periodically against the eye. If he ends up needing to rub it, have him go from the top of the eye downward, in a steady stroke. Be sure to replace the cloth each time, so as not to spread it.

Best of luck! I hate Pink Eye. Both my daughters have had it, I've had it a few times and so has my hubby... bleah.

Prep your son with the bad news: the eye drops are going to hurt. I don't know how old your son is, but when my daughter had pink eye at two it was pretty traumatic for both of us.

Everyone hand wash obsessively. Remember to disinfect door handles too. If he's up for it (and your values accept this asan option), give him some ibuprofen. Even some minor relief of the swelling will help ease the irritation.

Take a clean washcloth and wring it out in warm water with Johnson's Baby Shampoo added. Do this 3 times a day and the infection will go away. I don't know why or how it works but it does. And it has to be Johnson's Baby Shampoo, other brands won't work.

Whenever I have gotten pink eye, I had to take percripstion eye drops and was advised to us warm compresses throughout the day. Also, I was not allowed to return to work (with children whi probably gave it to me) for a week.

I've had conjunctivitis several times. Seems like every time I get a cold it goes to my eyes. I've never done anything special except to soak my eyes with a very warm wash cloth and wash my hands frequently. I've never washed bedding, etc. The germs die once they've dried up. The infections always goes away in a few days. no one else in the family has caught it.

My mother had conjunctivitis one time while visiting me. Because she was having medical difficulties with her eyes I took her to an ophthalmologist who prescribed an anti-biotic but said it could just as well be a virus that doesn't respond to anti-biotics. He suggested that we didn't need to have come in because conjunctivitis usually clears up on it's own.

Tea bags. Let the teabag soak in the hot water so it steeps. Then putll it out and leave it on a plate till its warm but not hot. Test it dont want to hurt his lids. Put an old shirt on him cause the tea stains. have him close his eyes and have him hold the tea bag on it. The heat and tea will help pull out the stuff and gie him relief. cold will not work so make sure it is warm

just make sure that YOU are washing your hands when you come into contact with him. I had the worst case of this a couple of years ago-much worse than kids get it.

When we get it (which is not often), we just put a cold pack on it (in a clean damp washcloth).
The cooling helps get the redness and irritation down.
Usually it's gone within 24 hrs.
