Crazy Hormones

I'm 43 and haven't gone through menopause yet, though my cycles are very short and light. They are still very regular. My son's 4; I stopped breastfeeding at 2.5. I've noticed recently that I get REALLY emotional about 5 days before my period and it's just so frustrating. Is there anything I can do to minimize this? I'd like to avoid drugs, but if there is something low dose that would help, that would be great. It's the only crazy symptom I have. Thanks!

I'm 40 and have posted a long post about this before. My doctor suggested taking Calcium and B-Complex vitamins together. He said that some women don't notice any change at all, but that some experience tons of relief. I've been taking it for quite awhile now, and it helps me a lot. Some women on this site have also mentioned Magnesium, and I take that as part of my migraine treatments, so it may be helping with PMS too. I was horrible before I started taking the vitamins, and now I can't even tell when I'm going to start my period unless I look at a calendar, and even then I can't always tell since my periods aren't as regular as they used to be. I hope you find something that works for you.

Regular exercise and a high protein/low sugar diet, especially during that week. And if that fails, I resort to chocolate and sex...

Its PMS.
It can get worse, after having a baby.
Mine did.
I hate PMS.

See a Naturopath Doctor.
They can tell you what natural things to take. Per YOUR issues. Not just guessing.

Or go to Whole Foods... they are quite helpful there.

I personally take "Vitex", also called "Chasteberry."
Research it online.

BUT, I would really recommend seeing a Naturopath Doctor.
That way you will not be 'guessing' and can get more targeted, natural alternative help.

PMS is often accompanied with fluid retention which can make you nervous and emotional. Avoid salt and caffeine for a few days prior to your PMS time, but if you notice swelling ankles or your rings getting tight, you can take Dandelion Root capsules and it will make you pee more.

If you would like a referral I recommend seeing Dr. Chalmers from Chalmers Wellness in Frisco. I stopped nursing 2 months ago and was feeling unsettled emotionally. Dr. Chalmers can treat your hormones naturally.

Do some research on Black Cohosh. It's frequently used to treat menopausal symptoms. I know it works very well on hot flashes. I'm not so certain about your other symptoms though. A naturopath doctor would be a good idea too--does anyone have any recommendations for one?

I know you said you would prefer to stay away from drugs and you've gotten a lot of advice on how to do that. I am in the same boat as you. I'm 39 and get looney before my period. My OBGN prescribed me a very low dose of lexapro that I start taking 10 days before my period is to begin. I track it using an iphone app called iperiod and it emails me 10 days before my next scheduled period so I can start taking the medication. I know it sounds crazy, but I really feel so much better. I don't get anxious and stressed out any more. And I take calcium, b-complex, multi-vitamins and magnesium and I still need that little extra help. I hope you find that happy place soon!!
